    Navajo Point

We decided to drive out the east road, Desert View Drive, to see all the viewpoints. We drove out to Desert View Watchtower, where we discovered the “Snack Bar” serves only ice cream and cookies. Then we drove back to the village, stopping at each scenic lookout along the way.

First up was Navajo Point, a fan favorite.

    Moving on

After seeing the Grand Canyon, we drove back on the highway to our RV. Would you know that during all this time together, I never realized Eric had founded a popular steakhouse in Tusayan Arizona? I guess it goes to show you never really know somebody.

And after we got back to Williams, we hooked up our truck and drove on down the road to our next destination: Meteor Crater outside of Winslow, Arizona.

    Meteor Crater

We came to see the Meteor Crater because it was on our way but it was ABSOLUTELY worth the stop. The crater formed 50,000 years ago when a large meteor struck the ground at a steep angle. It was traveling so fast it took only 10 seconds for it to hit the ground after it entered the atmosphere. Because the location was and is desert, the site has been well-preserved with little erosion or plant life growing around and over it (essentially hiding it from the naked eye). It’s nearly a mile across!!!

    Meteor Crater, Continued

This museum was really cool and they were adding onto it to expand the visitors area. We were surprised to find out the astronauts from the Apollo mission trained here because the landscape is similar to the moon, and it helped the scientists improve the equipment the astronauts traveled with.

The scale of the crater itself is incredibly vast and it’s hard to really convey it in a picture. I like the statistic that 2 million fans could watch 20 football games being played on individual fields all simultaneously.

    Movin' On

After the Meteor Crater, we had to get a move on. We have to make it all the way just outside Santa Fe tonight! Lots of coal mines and energy plants and refineries and so on along I-40. And tons of wacky Indian souvenir shops since we are in and out of tribal lands (mostly Navajo Nation).

What a funky little town! We turned off here to head towards the Petrified Forest and we were treated to a bunch of relics from Route 66.

Have you stayed in a wigwam lately?

    Why are there dinosaurs?

What happened on this poor road?

    Is this the right way?

If this is a National Park, why is there no one on the road to get there? Turns out Wednesday in April is NOT a popular tourist time here either.

    Petrified Forest

We stopped at the Rainbow Forest Museum & Visitors Center and found they had the most amazing display of petrified wood throughout the forest. Eric had seen a petrified forest before, but it was my first time learning about how it forms when the organic material inside a tree is replaced with minerals. I think this forest was 200 million years old.

    The Painted Desert

The painted desert is a vast area of colored rock and dunes through the Southwest, extending across multiple states. This location is one of the best and easiest places to see it. The old Route 66 used to run through the park, and we spotted an old Studebaker on the side of the abandoned road.

    Entering New Mexico

Today was a big day. We saw Meteor Crater, Petrified Forest, the Painted Desert, and drove 400+ miles. Finally we entered New Mexico, passed through Albuquerque, and made it up to our campground in Cochiti State Park.

Can you imagine how we felt when we pulled into the campground at 10:30 pm and there was someone parked and settled into our reserved spot? Lucky for us the camp host settled the problem right away and evicted the squatters. Hah! Can’t believe I just called someone with a Allegro motorhome a squatter!

    Cochiti Lake

Woke up at a beautiful & isolated state park campground that was just recently renovated. It’s nice to be out of the city and with a little more space since we’ve been staying mostly at RV parks up until this point.

It looks like sweltering hot country, but the weather has actually been mild—mid 70s with a constant breeze. Good time of year.

    Exploring Santa Fe

Today we decided to take our own driving tour of Santa Fe. We started off at the historic Plaza Cafe with the best sopapillas in New Mexico (I agree with the claim). They are these doughy fried triangles that you dip in honey-yum! We stopped by the Palace of Governors (the oldest continuously occupied public building in the U.S.) which was built in 1610 by the Spanish to help govern the Southwest.

The city of Santa Fe is incredibly charming. It’s evident it was an old city, with narrow streets and Pueblo architecture. We found ourselves winding our way up residential streets past charming adobe houses with wisteria vines climbing up the sides. The downtown had revitalized their rail yard district into an arts and dining center. It’s definitely a beautiful city, and one I would love to come back to again.

    The mountains

Next we drove up to a little state park less than 10 miles out of town (Hyde Memorial). I wanted to see if we got high enough up if we could see the valley laid out before us. Before we knew it we were in a proper forest with a winding road that took us above 9,000 feet!

And we’re hitting the road, driving back through Albuquerque and down south on Interstate 25 to see the more rural part of the state.

    The Rio Grande

I pictured the Rio Grande being large and impressive, big and muddy like the Mississippi. It’s a bit smaller and less “grand” than I expected, muuuch smaller than the Sacramento. The valley it produces, however, is a sea of green amongst the desert and is quite scenic.

Now we’re turning east and our highway will run just north of the White Sands Missile Testing Range.

    Dusk

We’ve noticed that the dark arrives abruptly here. It hits dusk and after about 15 minutes it is pitch black, no light. We were racing the sun to get into our site tonight and we got beat by about 10 minutes. Once we were settled in, we were treated to the nearby sounds of birds, crickets, and absolutely nothing else :-)Читать далее

We stayed in a state park about 20 minutes outside Alomogordo, which is a sizable town in this area. It was quite isolated and quiet, which is just how we like it. The campground was nestled into the base of the Sacramento Mountains (a familiar name this far from home), and we had a view of the entire valley for what seemed to be hundreds of miles.
