  • Škocjan Caves

    The Škocjan Caves absolutely blew my mind.

    Slovenia’s karst region is famous for its caves, but what makes Škocjan special is the underground river running through the massive caverns — and experiencing it in person is on another level entirely.

    The tour begins through enormous cathedral-like chambers full of stalactites and stalagmites. Already impressive. But then comes the true highlight: the underground canyon of the Reka River.

    It’s hard to properly describe the scale of it. Mist rising from the rushing river, narrow pathways clinging to the cave walls, bridges suspended high above the water, and remnants of 19th-century walkways that look straight out of an Indiana Jones movie. The entire place feels unreal.

    And then you emerge from the cave into what almost feels like a jungle landscape — towering rock walls, birds, trees, blue skies, and the river disappearing underground behind you.

    We chose the medium return route back to the parking lot, which added another cave opening, a waterfall, a stunning natural bridge, and… a lot of stairs 😄
    Exhausting, but absolutely worth it.

  • Vino Valdhuber

    Tonight’s stop: Vino Valdhuber, tucked away among the vineyards north of Maribor.

    Peaceful, beautiful, and exactly the kind of place you hope to find while road tripping through wine country.

    Their restaurant is usually only open Friday through Sunday, but after I emailed asking whether dinner and a wine tasting might still be possible on a Wednesday, the answer came back: “Of course!”

    What I expected: maybe a charcuterie board and a few wine samples.
    What we actually got: a full tasting menu paired with multiple glasses of their own wines.

    Add sunset over the vineyards, a castle visible in the distance, and a completely private dinner setting just for Sanjay and me — and it turned into one of the most magical evenings of the trip so far.

  • Graz

    After breakfast at Vino Valdhuber — delivered in a charming little picnic basket to our apartment — we made our way to Graz for the afternoon.

    First disappointment of the day: the iconic Murinsel was closed due to the holiday. But Graz quickly recovered from that setback.

    We took the funicular up to the Schlossberg, explored the old fortress remains, and admired the famous Graz Clock Tower towering above the city. Afterwards, we descended via the elevator straight into the old town.

    From there: Hauptplatz, City Hall, beautiful streets, and of course a coffee stop at BLEND coffee roasters. Nice modern roastery, good cappuccino, though this time no beans came home with me. We balanced things out with Austrian pastries before ending the visit at the cathedral — just in time before the rain started.

  • Hotel Gilbert

    Arrived in Vienna and checked into Hotel Gilbert for the next four nights.

    Very cool hotel and a lovely junior suite — but also one of those classic city hotels where arriving by car feels like an extreme sport 😄

    Thankfully, having an electric car saved us thanks to nearby EV parking spots. Otherwise, unloading luggage would have been… challenging.

  • Plachutta Wollzeile

    Dinner tonight was a true Viennese classic at Plachutta Wollzeile.

    The whole experience felt wonderfully traditional: elegant interior, formal service, and the legendary Tafelspitz made famous by Emperor Franz Joseph I.

    We started with liver pâté, beef tartare, beef in aspic, and asparagus with pickled tomato dressing before the main event arrived.

    For the Tafelspitz itself, you choose the specific cut of beef, which is then slowly simmered in broth with vegetables and bone marrow. The experience unfolds in stages:

    * First the broth and vegetables as soup
    * Then the tender beef with horseradish and sauces
    * And finally the bone marrow spread onto bread with salt and pepper

    Classic Viennese comfort food at its absolute best.

  • Secret Food Tour Vienna

    No breakfast today — for very good reasons.

    We met up with my friends Alex, Chris, and Timo (who brought his friend Dirk along) for a Secret Food Tour Vienna through downtown Vienna. Since they were also in town for the Eurovision Song Contest, it turned into the perfect shared Vienna experience.

    The tour mixed local food stops with bits of Viennese history and culture. Along the way we had:

    * open-faced sandwiches inspired by Tafelspitz
    * Pfiff beer
    * Schnitzel and potato salad
    * Goulash with Spätzle
    * G‘spritzter
    * Käsekrainer sausage
    * Buchteln
    * Apple strudel and coffee
    * Gin tasting
    * Punschkrapfen

  • Weinstube Josefstadt

    After a quick refresh at the hotel, Sanjay and I headed to Weinstube Josefstadt for an early dinner.

    Classic Viennese Heuriger atmosphere with a cozy inner courtyard and fresh wines usually taking center stage. Since the weather stayed cloudy and we both opted for non-alcoholic drinks this evening, we probably didn’t get the full traditional experience — but the atmosphere alone made it worthwhile.

  • Eurovision Jury Final

    The main reason we came to Vienna: the Eurovision Song Contest 2026 Jury Final at Wiener Stadthalle.

    Security was intense — essentially nothing allowed inside except your phone and the clothes you were wearing 😄

    Our seats ended up slightly behind the stage, but honestly the view was still excellent and the atmosphere absolutely electric. Seeing the Jury Final really feels like the perfect Eurovision experience:

    * you get the live energy in the arena
    * you see little behind-the-scenes moments
    * and then you still get to enjoy the Grand Final on TV the next day exactly as the producers intended it

    The anniversary intermission show celebrating 70 years of Eurovision was fantastic — and hearing discussions about Canada potentially joining in the next few years? That would be wild.

    After the show, we walked back through Vienna and basically collapsed into bed, very happy.

  • Leberkas-Pepi

    Breakfast, Austrian style.

    First stop of the day: Leberkas-Pepi for Leberkäse breakfast — because when in Austria, you commit properly 😄

    The hardest part was choosing from all the different varieties. We ended up going with porcini-truffle and roasted onion Leberkäse, paired with an Almdudler. Rich, comforting, and absolutely not a light breakfast.

  • Julius Meinl

    Next stop: Julius Meinl am Graben at Kohlmarkt and Graben.

    I expected a café. What I found was basically a luxury food hall for coffee lovers. Beautiful presentation, endless coffee products, elegant atmosphere — and naturally I left with more beans for home.

    Coffee stop included a classic Wiener Melange, Vienna’s answer to the cappuccino.

  • Figlmüller

    Today‘s lunch had been planned weeks in advance: Figlmüller.

    Alex, Chris, Timo, and Dirk joined us again, and we were seated in the original historic restaurant rather than the newer expansion. Smaller, cozier, and full of old Viennese atmosphere.

    And the schnitzel?
    Absolutely lived up to the hype. Massive, crispy, buttery perfection.

  • Eurovision Village

    Vienna really went all out for the Eurovision Song Contest 2026.

    The huge Eurovision Village in front of Vienna City Hall featured multiple stages, activations, food areas, and massive seating spaces.

    The constant rain was unfortunate for the organizers, because the setup itself was genuinely impressive. Still, the atmosphere was fantastic and the whole city felt fully taken over by Eurovision energy.

  • Café Demel

    Of course, no Vienna visit would be complete without Kaiserschmarrn at Demel.

    We had to wait a bit for a table, but it was absolutely worth it. Fluffy Kaiserschmarrn, elegant historic interiors, and that unmistakable classic Viennese café atmosphere. I also took some time to wander through the café itself — such a beautiful place.

  • Coffee Pirates

    After saying goodbye to the group at Demel, Sanjay and I rushed over to Coffee Pirates.

    I specifically wanted beans from them after they were named best roaster in Vienna in 2025 — and obviously I couldn’t leave without trying an espresso as well.

    The café itself feels sleek, modern, and effortlessly cool. Great coffee, great design, great vibe.

  • Eurovision Grand Final at Gleis//Garten

    For the Eurovision Song Contest 2026 Grand Final, Alex had reserved a table weeks in advance at Gleis//Garten — and it turned out to be the perfect choice.

    The food hall setup with multiple bars and food stalls already created a fantastic atmosphere, but the real highlight was the massive screen and our front-row table for the final.

    Even though we had already seen the Jury Final the night before, tonight was all about the suspense of the results — and it absolutely turned into a nail-biter.

    And in the end: Bulgaria won.
    Bangaranga! 😄

    Started the day early with a quiet Brews & Views moment in Vienna’s MuseumsQuartier.

    After a quick train ride, we arrived in Bratislava and immediately made our first coffee stop at BLACK..

    Out of the three specialty coffee roasters I visited in Bratislava, this one probably became my favourite — mostly because their cappuccino had just a little more oomph and body than the others. Naturally, beans came home with me as well.

  • Walking Tour Bratislava

    5月17日, スロバキア ⋅ ☁️ 14 °C

    If no food tour exists, a guided walking tour is usually the next best way to get to know a city — and Bratislava delivered.

    The tour covered:

    * Bratislava Castle
    * the UFO bridge tower
    * the former Jewish quarter
    * St. Martin’s Cathedral
    * the Main Square
    * Michael’s Gate
    * Čumil
    * and the charming little alleyways of the old town

    The guide was excellent — though by the end, everyone’s legs were definitely feeling it 😄

    Final coffee stop in Bratislava: Sweet Beans Coffee Roastery.

    Great coffee, super friendly staff, and one hilarious local insight: apparently other Slovak cities joke that all people in Bratislava do is roast coffee and drink coffee 😄

    Honestly? Based on today, that sounds completely accurate. Bratislava has an excellent coffee scene.
