  • Day 11

    Windsor to Kansas City

    April 24, 2017 in the United States ⋅ ☀️ 19 °C

Hit the road at 7am. No issues crossing border even with car full of camping stuff and trike. Did take wrong turn after the bridge and ended up with an interesting detour through Detriot. Saw both good and bad areas.

Got back on Interstate 94 heading west towards Chicago. Seems most Michigan drivers dont believe in turn signals for lane changes. Original intent was maybe visit Chicago, travel a part of Route 66 and end the day in St Louis. But hit Michigan City at the bottom of Lake Michigan and decided to get off the Interstate and drive through Indiana on the rural roads.

Passed through many nice small towns such as Hebron, Momence, Piper City and Clinton(!?). Reminded me of rural Ontario and upstate New York. Surprises were the disappearance small independent restaurants replaced with Subways and other chains; small stores replaced with Walmart and strip malls; and a chain called "Family Video" that still rents VHS and DVDs. For the last one, it's a reminder of the issue getting broadband Internet to rural and remote locations. The huge divide between urban, rural and remote for effective Internet speeds will worsen the access to information, jobs and other advances.

At Springfield jumped back on Interstates and decided to go to Kansas City. Almost 11 hrs of driving, so easily got back into the groove of long distance driving. Did take several breaks and stops. No speeding tickets. Tunes and audio books do help. More Classic Vinyl & Rewind. Also Thomas Friedman's book "Thank You for Being Late: An Optimists Guide to Thriving in the Age of Accelerations" which I highly recommend.

  • Whitby to Windsor

    April 13, 2017 in Canada ⋅ ⛅ 8 °C

Packed up the car, made goodbyes and hit he road after lunch.
5+ hour drive with 1hr nap near London. Not used to driving more then one hour after 20 years of GO trains.

Audio for driving was Sirius/XM Classic Vinyl and Rewind. Good road trip tunes from Queen, Who, Steppenwolf and Rush.

Reached Windsor by 7pm. Stayed with my brother and his family. Had nice dinner and great chat. Good to catch up in person.

  • Introduction and Overview

    April 13, 2017 in Canada ⋅ ☀️ 12 °C

Starting a multi-week road trip to the west coast. Taking sometime to explore some national parks, visit family, slow down and explore.

Recent work changes, that were of my own design, have put me into the early retirement cohort. At 55, that's temporary. For mind and money, I will be working until 70+. Looking to break the next 15+ years into alternative chunks of work, travel and education. Versus just working for 12+ years then retiring.

No set agenda or itinerary. Generally, will head west to California, turn north to BC then east for home. Only set date is April 22 in San Jose. Much cheaper NHL playoff tickets, San Jose vs Edmonton, then could be had in either Edmonton or Toronto (Leafs in the playoffs!?). Go Oilers.

Looking to do some hotel/motel stops, car camping and hopefully trike touring. The trike is a Catrike Expedition recumbent tricycle. A smarter and more comfortable way to do bike touring particularly for middle aged folks. Best to Google it to understand. The intention of the trike is to travel and see things at a slower more human pace versus driving by everything at 100+ km/hr.

Packing consists of car, camping and trike stuff. Trying to be flexible and open for whatever weather, whims and other circumstances is thrown my way. Camping stuff includes tent, air mattress, cooking and sleeping bag thats normal for car camping. Trike stuff is trike, panniers, spares and other bike touring items.
