    Helicopter pad hike

    October 22, 2017 in the United States ⋅ 🌙 64 °F

Tons of trails throughout the hills, we started at the beach and worked our way up along the ridges past some old WWII batteries to an old helicopter pad, which is the highest you can get. Wide, non-technical trails but plenty of climbing. AMAZING views on a sunny day like today.Read more

  • The Trident

    October 22, 2017 in the United States ⋅ 🌙 66 °F

This is the obvious place for anyone visiting Sausalito to eat--out over the water. Of course people who live here avoid it like the plague, but although it has a certain tourist-trap vibe, it's actually pretty good. The food is a bit overpriced but at least it's tasty. I had crab cake Benadict, because why not.Read more

  • Joinery Beerhall

    October 22, 2017 in the United States ⋅ 🌙 64 °F

Tim and I walked along to this place, and had a decent IPA. The space is fine, the food looked good although we'd already eaten. It would have been nicer to sit outside, but there wasn't a ton of seating out there. I would rate this place as "fine."Read more

  • Fish

    October 22, 2017 in the United States ⋅ 🌙 64 °F

This place is so cool! It's all sustainable seafood, cash-only, lots of outdoor seating. We still weren't hungry, but we want to come back for lunch after seeing the menu. We had another beer which was OK, really it was the ambiance of this place I loved. As we were leaving, it was packing up with hipsters, but what are you gonna do.Read more

  • Golden gate bridge

    October 23, 2017 in the United States ⋅ ☀️ 68 °F

First of all, how great is this photo? We enjoyed spectacular weather as we walked over the bridge from Sausalito into SF. It wasn't even windy, which is really unusual. It was, however, very loud with all the traffic. I always feel threatened when walking over a bridge that's primarily meant for cars, but that's just one of my neuroses. The gateway to SF bay is a marvel, and on a day like this, it's simply breathtaking.Read more

  • Codmother fish and chips

    October 23, 2017 in the United States ⋅ ☀️ 75 °F

Yelp saves the day again. We were right in the heart of Fisherman's Wharf, and only Tim seemed to think that was a concern when deciding where to eat. Apparently he has never been caught in a tourist-trap, and good for him. I insisted we Yelp our way out of danger, and we came up with what is essentially a permanent food truck, just a block or so off the main drag. We had wonderful fish & chips at a shady table on a hot day. Highly recommend.Read more

  • Pier 39

    October 23, 2017 in the United States ⋅ ☀️ 79 °F

I'm a little embarrassed to admit we almost missed the sea lions completely. We walked along Pier 39 down the center, which is that gross, carnival scene that many port cities have. We were looking for a particular place to get a beer, but I wanted to look off the end of the pier so we did that first. I heard sea lions barking, and voila! This is totally a thing. There were tons of people watching the sea lion drama. We loved it.Read more

  • Beer 39

    October 23, 2017 in the United States ⋅ ☀️ 79 °F

We shared an IPA flight. Tasty! This bar is on Pier 39, which is otherwise a horror. But this place is a little quieter, and had a decent selection of local beers, and a really nice bartender. It occurred to me that it wouldn't be the worst place to be a bartender. Until I thought about parking.Read more

  • Fermentation Lab

    October 23, 2017 in the United States ⋅ ☀️ 81 °F

The coolest thing about this place is its name. The beer was fine. The decor was strange and disconnected--mason jars of garlic cloves and chilis? I get that they are fermenting, but why? This is a beer bar, I feel certain those garlic cloves and chilis are not for brewing beer. The guy behind the bar seemed put out that we arrived 5 minutes after opening--he apparently needs some time to warm up to his job. His phone was connected to the sound system, so the 300 text alerts he got while we were there were broadcast overhead. Douchebag.Read more

  • Beer Store

    October 23, 2017 in the United States ⋅ ☀️ 79 °F

A much better choice! They have great beer on tap, but the real strength is the bottle shop. A very carefully and artfully curated selection of beers, many of which I hadn't seen before. Choose this place over Fermentation Lab, without hesitation.Read more

  • Bay model

    October 24, 2017 in the United States ⋅ ☀️ 82 °F

I am a big fan of quirky, free tourist attractions. This GIANT model of the San Francisco bay is one of the best things about Sausalito, IMO. Gives you a great sense of the geography and topography of the bay, which is indeed as shallow in most places as I've heard. The part under the Golden Gate is comparatively deep, like, really deep. The SF Bay is a wonder.Read more

  • Almanac brewing taproom

    October 24, 2017 in the United States ⋅ ☀️ 88 °F

Last year, when we came out for Stu & Clay's wedding, this taproom didn't exist. But Tim knew it had opened, so we made the pilgrimage and it totally exceeded our expectations. Beautiful outdoor seating. so many awesome beers. Highly recommend.Read more

  • Golden Era

    October 24, 2017 in the United States ⋅ 🌙 73 °F

When Shimi suggested vegan Vietnamese for dinner, I was like, "fine, whatever." But this was really good! They do a lot of fake meat, which used to skeeve me out, but fake meat technology has apparently come a long way. Fair warning, this place is in a super crappy neighborhood, so be prepared to step over a lot of gross humanity if you walk here.Read more

  • Daniel's

    October 26, 2017 in the United States ⋅ ☀️ 63 °F

I'm learning that no matter the Anglo (or male, in this case) name, these corner coffee joints in Union Square are all run by Korean women. At Daniel's though, the women are super-nice and the food is fresh and made with more care than the crappy place I went to yesterday. This place is cash only, and I don't really know where they're cooking the food because it's tiny, but I was very happy with my post-run stop here.Read more

  • Run to Aquatic Park

    October 26, 2017 in the United States ⋅ ☀️ 66 °F

I knew running from my hotel would be a pain, and it was. I went down Market Street to the Embarcadero, stopping pretty much every block for a light. There were a lot of people out, but I'm pretty good at dodging. Once I got to the waterfront it was easier, although man there are some crazy smells in this City. I would say that I smelled about 70% of the smells that exist on my run this morning. Anyway, I made it all the way to Aquatic Park, where I took a few pictures before turning around. It wasn't a great training run, but it was better than staying in bed (which I admit was also quite tempting).Read more

  • Freshrolls

    October 26, 2017 in the United States ⋅ 🌙 66 °F

This place is really interesting; I've now been here twice during my trip. Food is indeed fresh, and you can get it in a springroll wrap, as a bowl, or in a sandwich. It now occurs to me I've eaten Vietnamese food for the majority of my meals in SF. Oh well, Vietnamese food is really good. This place has a kind of Chipotle vibe, where you pick your food form, your protein, and your veggies as you migrate down the line. I dig it.Read more

  • Hard Water

    October 27, 2017 in the United States ⋅ ☀️ 73 °F

This photo is of a very pretty, very delicious, not-sweet cocktail I got at Hard Water. Shimi and I got the last table outside on a nice Friday evening, and really enjoyed our happy hour. Did this cocktail cost $13? Yes, yes it did. Welcome to San Francisco.Read more

  • The Slanted Door

    October 27, 2017 in the United States ⋅ 🌙 64 °F

Here's something I'm realizing about myself: with few exceptions, I like eating in mid-range restaurants better than high-end ones. The Slanted Door is super expensive, and the food is very good. But you know what? I think I may have enjoyed the food at Golden Era more. And I didn't pay for either one, so you can consider my conclusions scientifically sound.Read more

  • Lemonade

    October 28, 2017 in the United States ⋅ ☀️ 66 °F

They had an A-frame sign out front advertising poke bowls, so....yeah. The poke bowl did not disappoint.
I got my bowl to go and ate in Yerba Buena park. Such a nice midday reprieve from that freezing, soulless conference hotel.Read more
