  • Plitvice Lakes National Park, Upper Lake

    October 9, 2023 in Croatia ⋅ 🌙 20 °C

Oldest national park in Croatia. I started at entrance 2, there I took the boat from P1 to P2. Walked the upper lakes via trail E and H back.(partially against the grain)
Afterwards I still had plenty of time so I took the boat from P2 to P3 and walked back to the hotel along the lake.
Both upper and lower could easily be done in a day trip from Zadar without an overnight stay.

  • Plitvice Lakes, Lower Lakes

    October 10, 2023 in Croatia ⋅ ⛅ 14 °C

Started right at 7:00. Only one couple was there with me. Such a huge improvement compared to the huge groups. A completely different experience. This made the park great instead of just okay.
After finishing lower lakes, did the upper lakes again.Read more

  • Split

    October 11, 2023 in Croatia ⋅ ☀️ 26 °C

City walking tour through split and walked up the hill for a nice city view.
Old stone houses with narrow streets in old town, a real maze of them.

  • Dubrovnik

    October 14, 2023 in Croatia ⋅ ☀️ 23 °C

The town is a bit overrun by tourist, even after the main season.

Etwas zuviele Touristen in der Altstadt, einer der Orte wo die Kreuzfahrt Schiffe halten und etliche Bus Touren Tages Ausflüge machen.Read more

  • Albania

    October 15, 2023 in Albania ⋅ ☀️ 26 °C

Traveling Albania is done by private buses of varying sizes and repair state. You might get one that has no Aircon at all and boil in the heat or one where it blows cold air on full tilt until you get sick. (But most are okay)
Schedules are printed on street signs or just by asking drivers. No buying tickets up front, you show up and get on(exception sarande). Some buses might wait until they are full too, or leave early when they are. A lot more improvisation and spontaneity here.
Some of them, you could even enter or leave at any part of the trip at the side of the road.

Traveling here in general feels very safe, no petty crime or scams I could see or hear from any traveler. Even at night in non touristy corners it feels safe. While only some can speak English, most locals are helpful and friendly.

Public transport in cities is often very vague. Very rough schedules e.g. only times of the starting location known or not at all.
Hard to find information on what bus goes where, or where stops are. Especially problematic in bigger cities with more than one line, like Tirana. But if you are in a hurry there are always plenty of affordable taxis.

Many places have local cat and dog populations that live on the street, so far they were all friendly too.

Street vendors for fruit and veggies, roasted corn, drinks or other snacks can be found at many streets. Combined with the cafe culture makes the cities feel a lot more alive.

The country is good for hiking, but the hiking culture hasn't really arrived yet. Most places you need to know someone or a car yourself.
Similar with bicycles, hard to find and then overpriced or only full day rentals, or in a very poor state.

I enjoyed it here. Will likely come back when it's hiking weather again.

Finished up Kotor with a hike up to the fortress with a great view over the town.

  • Podgorica

    October 19, 2023 in Montenegro ⋅ ☁️ 19 °C

The capital, the new one, there isn't much for sightseeing here, primarily many shopping streets and big shopping centers.

  • Lezhe

    October 24, 2023 in Albania ⋅ ☁️ 17 °C

Nice little town at the coast with another peaceful castle ruin with great views.
Walk along the beach of Shengjin, enjoying a cloud covered sunset with some free roaming cows.

  • Tirana

    October 26, 2023 in Albania ⋅ ⛅ 22 °C

Tirana the capital, very busy and lots of people and cars moving about. But once you duck into some side roads you have lots of cafes and restaurants. Two completely different atmospheres right next to each other.
Nice calm lake in walking distance of the city to relax at.

  • Berat

    October 29, 2023 in Albania ⋅ ☀️ 22 °C

Berat, an old small City with a nice castle, that people still live in, and a small very quiet old town.
One big promenade with lots of Cafes and bars.
You already notice it's getting really late in the season, a few places close at the end of October or started renovations.
Berat is also advertised as the city of thousands and one windows, but that is just a translation error that Marketing picked up. It's window above window, since the houses on the hills are above each other.

  • Gjirokaster

  • Trieste

    November 12, 2023 in Italy

Flew over to Trieste, instead of going further down to Greece and then up the long way through Italy. It's Getting a bit too cold and wet. Might be time to take a short breather, downsize the backpack to flying size and look for warmer pastures.

Trieste, Habsburg influenced city. It was not very touristy, even though some cruise ships start their journey here.
Many Cafés, bars and restaurants near their main canal with many broad pedestrian streets around it.
Invites to linger and slow down.

The seafront was quite damaged from the storms, and many parts on the way to the Castle Miramare need repairs.
Also parts of the park seemed closed, or at least the doors towards the street. So take the bus to the last stop, there is an open entrance.
