Seattle to Cape Mears Loop Lookout

After upgrading our electrical system and spending time with family and friends for the holidays we are back on the road again. A quick overnight stop at Gee Creek Rest Area we then set off toward the coast. Tucson, AZ

Moose had a medical emergency so at midnight I had to leave the Dragoons to get him to the Vet hospital 1 1/2 hours away. We spent 3 days in Tucson doing chores, visiting Jacob, one of our dear friends and just making sure Moose was 100%. We do a little exploring at Saguaro National Park and of some very cool neighborhoods in TucsonLue lisää

Chiricahaus Mountains, AZ

In the Chiricahaus we spent 2 night on the west side of the summit in Pinery Canyon which was a classic canyon scape. Then we drove over the 7500 ft dirt road summit and met up with our friends Mike and Scout again in a much more open and sunny location.Lue lisää

Hot Well Dunes Recreation Area

Hot Well Dunes is a BLM campground with 10 sites and 2 hot tubs fed by an artesian well and heated by the sun. The tubs get to 103-106 degrees and was a delightful break from driving. Oh and the cost to camp here and use the hot tubs is $3 per day ($1.5 for seniors).Lue lisää

Gila River, Riverview Campground

The Gila (pronounced Heela) River is a big deal down here and provides water for southern Arizona. What a treat to find a water source we could actually swim in (and we did). This NW gal really misses the water). Moose has been in the river many times in the short time we’ve been here. The Riverview campground fee is a few dollar a night but free to right now because they are upgrading the camp sites.Lue lisää

Overnight in Phoenix

Had to pick up some packages and go to the Ram dealership for a quick maintenance issue so stayed over night in Glendale, AZ which is essentially Phoenix. While there I connected with my dear friend Lisa from West Seattle who was staying just down the road from me with her husband here to watch the Mariners. We had a great visit. The next morning I started heading north to Page, AZ to meet up with some new friends I made last month. The scenery is changing quickly including a lot of snow in the Flagstaff area.Lue lisää

Upper Antelope Canyon Slot Tour

Today was definitely a highlight of my trip. We did the Navajo guided tour of the Upper Antelope Canyon Slot, which is something I have always wanted to do.

After a quick bite to eat we then drove to a spot in Glen Canyon so we could hike down to the Colorado River so we could go swimming. It was so much fun.Lue lisää

Glen Canyon National Recreation Area

We found a great spot to camp for a couple nights right on the water in Glen Canyon National Recreation Area. Pretty good deal for $3.5 a night. It is quite stunning, quiet and very relaxing. The water is very low so we are parked a 100 feet from the actual water, but easily accessible.Lue lisää

Escalante Toadstools and Buckskin Gulch

We left Glen Canyon this morning. The weather was cold and windy. We headed west to see the toadstools in Staircase/Escalante area and the slot canyon of Buckskin Gulch in southern Utah. I didn’t make it yo the slot canyon area of Buckskin Gulch but it was still an amazing day of hiking. Stunning scenery. By the end of the day though the weather turned cold and windy here as well. Spending tonight in Kanab, UT.Lue lisää

Hiking The Valley of Fire, Nevada

It has been unseasonably cold and windy in the Southwest. We can seem to escape it. Our friends Ron and Alida headed north and we headed to Valley of Fire outside of Las Vegas. The last time I was here was shortly after my mom died; I brought my dad and Yury here for an outing. Yury was 3 1/2 and he loved climbing all over these remarkable rocks. What an amazing day Moose and I had today on the 3 hikes we did today.Lue lisää

Lake Mead

Headed further south to get out of the cold and windy weather. Found a great spot on Lake Mead to hide out for awhile. Unfortunately the wind was going to arrive in a few days. After 3 beautiful days we left Lake Mead to avoid the 50 mph wind that was coming.Lue lisää

Pyramid Ridge CG, Cedar City Utah

Our choices seemed to be dust storm or snow storm. We opted for the snow storm, dah! We sheltered in place at a dry BLM campground just outside Cedar City Utah. We arrived here a day before the weather arrived which was nice; we had time to get gas, groceries, do laundry, fill the propane tank and find the all important donut shop. We won’t talk about the fact that I didn’t actually get to eat the donuts (Moose!). Twenty four hours after we arrived the storm arrived. We woke up to a nice covering of beautiful dry powder. We went for a short hike and played in the snow. It snowed on and off during the day but by the next day we had blue sky and so of course the snow was disappearing and we were able to get back on the road.Lue lisää

Goblin Valley State Park

Goblin Valley State Park is tucked away in a very remote part of Utah and has incredibly diverse scenery, great hiking, 2slot canyons and rock windows! We camped with or near Carrie, Dave and Roodle (Stormtrooper) for 7 days. Six of the 7 days in the free dispersed area of the state park (very unusual to have free camping in a state park). We did stay one night in the paid park to hike among the Goblins (hoodoo formations). The weather is finally starting to warm up and the sky was clear for almost the entire time we were there. On our last night we were joined by 2 different rigs (and people) and had a wonderful sit down meal together.Lue lisää
