After a quick tour thru the colonial zone at our day of arrival in Santo Domingo, the second day started with the must sees outside the colonial zone.
First stop 'Parque Nacional Los Tres Ojos'. A big limestone cave existing since the melting of the last ice age. The 'Taino' people (indigenous of Hispaniola) used these caves for religious rituals.

Between our next stop and the 'Tres Ojos' there's a big park. With an amphitheater, national Tennis court, .... We were not allowed to walk there because of robbery.

Our next stop was curious one. The outside looked like a mixture of UDSSR architecture, mixed with NS architecture and an old Mayan pyramid. In the inside there was (at least that's what people there telling you) box containing the remains of Christopher Columbus.Les mer

Two nights in Santa Barbara de Samana, two nights in an Airbnb with a wonderful view of the coast, the city and the ocean ... Two nights with a bar and pool billiard just on the other side of the street. To bad our Airbnb didn't had glass in the windows so there was no noise isolation. Every night party till 3 in the morning.

Soooo we were in serious need of a more calm and relaxed area for her birthday. 🌿🌳🌧️ We canceled our last night in Santa Barbara and just went 13km north of Samana in the little town 'El Valle'. Nearly no tourist, no mobile coverage and all accomodations in the middle of tropical rainforest and yes we had rain. 😉Les mer

After some nights in more or less budget AirBnBs' we decided to have one night in a more exclusive place to sleep. So we spend the night in a jungle hotel.

The hotel had a endless pool with a wonderful view over the valley and on to the ocean.Les mer

Playa El Valle - how locals are fishing

After a night with heavy rain fall the water at 'Playa El Valle' looked a bit muddy from the distant view of our infinity pool. Nevertheless we went there to enjoy a day at the beach before starting our trip to 'Las Terrenas'.

Arriving at the beach we saw some local guys rope pulling looking as if the ocean is the enemy. After repeating pulling - let loose - pulling every 15m of the beach a second group arrived at our part of the beach coming from the other side. The ropes there were pulling were the end of a trawl net.
The whole village came together and worked together to catch the fishs for the day.Les mer

Las Terrenas - Playa Popy

Moving just a few kilometers to the west sometimes make a huge difference. 'El Valle' was a small secluded place with rain forest and mountains all around. Now we're in 'Las Terrenas'.

Kilometers of white to golden beaches with palms. You can decide whether you wanna stay in areas with beach bars and music or without, where you have small reefs to snorkel (sadly most of them are dead) or you wanna be able to walk many meters in the shallow water.

Las Terrenas - Playa las Ballenas

Second day of 'Las Terrenas'. After another night with heavy rainfall today it's pure sunshine 😎🌞
Lunch we had in a very small family run restaurant. Daddy is the cook, mommy is doing the bar and after school the daughters help to run the service. Every meal is made fresh, with fresh fish of the day. Every flowers used for decorating is picked by hand in the own garden.

Dishes in order:
- Empanada with Choriza and Mushrooms, Beef and Cheese, Chicken, cheese and bell pepper
- Ceviche with fresh Mahi Mahi and Octopus (the Mahi Mahi got brought by Motorbike Minutes before we ordered)
- Fish fingers with Soy sauce mixed with honey and coconut milkLes mer

Well at some days we don't even know what we could upload. Today was a very lazy day at the beach. Before we went to Playa Popy again, we had a look on the local "fish market". Instead bringing them to a real market the fishermen sold their catch of the directly on the beach. Between a bar, the local cemetery and the ocean front.Les mer

Whale Watching

The whale watching season started! It was the reason why we stayed longer in Las Terrenas. Today finally was the day - and we saw some whales from the boat 🐳 The experience was different as expected, especially because of the heavy rain all day long. Time to try the rain capes 😎

End of the trip was at the “famous” ‘Bacardi Island’. Beautiful turquoise water and even warmer than outside.Les mer

The last days in Dominican Republic we spent in the south of the island, in Bayahibe. Somehow we found us in a little town with lots of Italian flavour, including aperitivo on the rooftop of our hotel. We visited Isla Saona, a real Caribbean paradise in the Caribbean Sea, with starfishes in clear water, beautiful palm trees and white sand - and a party boat that brought us there (also parts of pirates of the Caribbean were shot here). A real difference to the rougher Atlantic coast we have been before.Les mer

Aren't photos of 'lost places', dead and empty once inhabited villages, clinics, factories, .... A real popular thing right now?
Turn on HDR filters, darkening the whole image to add some mystery.

Already in our last year's travel to Indonesia we saw a lot of 'ruins' where pre-corona thousands of tourists spend their time. It's the same here. In the heart of Dominican tourism, in the heart of the 'Cotubanamá National Parc' there are hundreds of fiberglass lounge chairs, electronical devices, ....

Today is time to say good bye to the Dominican republic! Hopefully the mayan ruins in Mexico will more impressive then the lost places!Les mer

After leaving the Dominican republic our next stop was Cancun. After just one night and probably the worst Mexican food we ever had, to the "charming, laid-back, Mexico's best kept secret" island of Holbox.

This island is praised for his vibes, turquoise waters, swimming with whale sharks and having a beach with bioluminescence.

Compared to the overcrowded beaches of Cancun or playa del Carmen it really seems to be quiet over here. But nothing compared to the quiet towns and beaches we visited before.Les mer
