Wunaamin CP - Bell Gorge

From our caving adventure we continued for around 2 hours (60 km) down a very corrugated road towards the Gibb River Road. Just before we turned onto the Gibb River Road, Graham noticed a new noise and we found that the bolts through the maxi-trax had sheared off, with them dragging on the ground. Thankfully, most of the Gibb River Road was an improvement but we still had around 120 km of travel Eastward to get to our campsite. We arrived after dark and enjoyed leftovers and fell into bed.
Next morning, we were up early to hike to Bell Gorge. It's amazing how you can walk through an area that is so hot and dry and suddenly you emerge into an oasis.Leggi altro

Onto Birdwood Downs Station

Today we traveled back the way we came yesterday along the Gibb River Road to Derby. We were about 10 km from the sealed section when our tyre sensor started beeping - alas, we suffered our 2nd puncture on this trip.
Birdwood Downs is a station stay just outside of Derby and they will look after your vehicle and drop you off at the airport for your Horizontal Falls tour.

Horizontal Falls Tour

We made it to one of our bucket list items. It was great to see and feel this unique natural phenomenon. We were dropped off in the early afternoon at Derby Airport and boarded a Cessna 208. Thirty minutes later, we landed in the beautiful blue waters of Talbot Bay. All the activities on the tour revolve around tide times. First, we got to see the Tawney Nurse Sharks and Bull Sharks that live in the bay. We then boarded a power boat and sped through the first falls (both directions) before viewing the second narrower falls from the white water. From here, we began a pleasant sunset cruise down Poulton Creek, enjoying the area's landscape, geology and history.
Back on the houseboat, we enjoyed nibbles and then the very yummy barramundi dinner.
The following day, we were up early for a 6 am breakfast and another trip on the speedboat through the falls. At 7am, we again boarded the seaplane for an hour-long scenic flight over the falls, Talbot Bay and King Sound.Leggi altro

Cable Beach

After picking up a new tyre in Derby (unfortunately, our puncture couldn't be mended), we made our way to Broome to do some repairs, shopping and laundry.
The beach was lovely (not as nice as Adelaide beaches, though), and we enjoyed a morning walk and a drive onto the beach (carpark) to watch the camel riders at sunset.Leggi altro

Coconut Well

The tides definitely provide us with some entertainment up here. At Coconut Well, if the high tide is greater than 9 metres, you can walk up the beach with your 🛟 before the peak to where the lagoon meets the sea and have the tide float you back down.
A little further down the road, you can visit some beautiful rock pools that are visible at low tide.Leggi altro

Barn Hill Station

We are now on our way to Karijini and trying to get South into a somewhat cooler climate. This stop at Barn Hill Station was great, as they baked fresh bread daily and offered wood-fired pizzas for dinner, which Graham enjoyed.

Also, our first frill-necked lizard..... hanging by the amenities block.Leggi altro

Karigini NP

We had a long day driving, sharing the road with some much larger vehicles, before finally arriving at Dales Campground in Karigini National Park, where we plan to spend the next few days. Luckily, the weather seems to be a little cooler, at around 32 degrees with night-time temperatures less than 20. Also, we saw our first clouds and rain in 75 days.
It looks like we are going to experience the incredible variety of WA wildflowers. Much to Graham's frustration, I have taken photos of all the different varieties in Karigini.Leggi altro

Karigini NP - Dales Gorge Walk

Basing ourselves in Dales Campground meant we could set out on foot to do this walk. It began with a leisurely stroll along the rim, viewing Circular Pool before descending into the gorge. From the steps leading down, you get a good view of Fortescue Falls. Once in the gorge, a quick rock scramble takes you to the Fern Pool. We enjoyed a lovely swim here before continuing back the way we came, this time through the picturesque gorge back to our campground.Leggi altro

We took a drive around Karratha and then stopped for lunch and some time relaxing in the cool before heading to Dampier for the night.

Dampier

We pulled into a wonderful council run campground to enjoy some air-conditioning in Dampier.
After all our off-road travel we could rename our home the Red Explorer - some cleaning was necessary. Graham took care of the outside while I worked inside.
Nearby Hearson's Cove is one of the places you can view the staircase to the moon. We spent some time here enjoying the beach and stealing the moon 🌝.
We've had a bit of free time during the day and so I convinced Graham to help me try out some Geocaching. Had a bit of fun and found a couple whilst learning some local history. We also called into the Karratha Gas Plant Visitors Centre.Leggi altro

Humpback Whale Tour

We splurged on a Humpback Whale interaction tour for today. An early start had us out on the reef snorkeling in the Tantabiddi Sanctuary Zone. Unfortunately, Graham and I didn't get to see a humpback while in the water but we did get 4 swims with a whale shark.

Yardi Creek

We had a recovery day today, with a slow morning before cruising down to Yardi Creek for our overnight stay. In the afternoon the heavens opened up and the weather cooled, making for a comfortable night.
First on our itinerary for the day, was a walk along the rim of the Yardi Creek Gorge. The views were picturesque and we saw some magnificent wildlife.Leggi altro

The water was beautiful whilst the current carried us over the beautiful coral. There were so many fish of all different varieties. Huge schools of them surrounding us as we floated.

A very windy day today and not suitable for snorkeling.
We took a drive to Jurabi and learnt about turtle breeding, watched some kite surfers on the beach, looked for birds from the hide in Mangrove Bay and spent some time at the Vlamingh Lighthouse whale spotting and enjoying the sunset.Leggi altro
