Grebenstein

PILGRIMAGE INTO LIFE
Day 3,742
September 24, 2026
Grebenstein
We are driving along the B1 toward Hildesheim. I am lost in thought. Even though I believe I am handling my current situation quite calmly, dark clouds sometimes drift into my field of vision.
As a result, I don't pay enough attention to the route; in Negenborn, I turn onto a road that leads us to Holzminden instead of into the rolling green landscape of the nature park.
While looking for a place to sleep, we find an official, free parking spot by the Nethe River in Ottbergen—located to the right of the bridge along a path that leads into the open fields. It is situated under trees by the small river, overlooking a meadow backed by stacks of firewood.
Apparently, one can spend the night in Borgentreich opposite the Lourdes Grotto. The spot lies between a patch of meadow surrounded by a hill and the narrow road that winds past the grotto.
At this time of year, it is a dark place that feels a bit unwelcoming to me, though in photos online, it certainly gives the impression of being bright.
"Around 1900, inspired by a pilgrimage to the original site in France, Maria Fiorentini—a resident of Borgentreich—successfully campaigned to have a replica built in the town's former quarry. Sculptor Clemens Brilon was commissioned to create the replica of the Virgin Mary statue, and with the help of the local community, the grotto’s inauguration was celebrated just two years later."

Between the villages of Warbsen—home to a street lined with beautiful half-timbered houses—and Dalhausen, where the livestock are driven down from the mountain pastures in October, we find a track leading into the fields; numerous mice have settled along its edges. Hilde is thrilled. In the end, the only option left to us is the site in Hofgeismar, which is absolutely packed with dozens of campers. Even so, we manage to find a quiet spot for the night, during which it rains heavily.
I was actually just looking for a nice walking route, but instead I come across a flock of sheep in the morning light and, later, the Huguenot church in Kelze, built in 1707.
"The historic Huguenot church in Kelze is a simple half-timbered church built in 1707 for Huguenot refugees."

The background and history are fascinating.
The walk ends up being a secondary matter; no sooner has Hilde relieved herself than she wants to go back to the van—a smart move, as it starts to rain again.
In Grebenstein, near the outdoor pool, we find a bright parking spot with a sweeping view where we can have breakfast.Read more
