  • Day 77 - Fish River Canyon

    31 Mei 2022, Namibia ⋅ ☀️ 16 °C

    We joined last nights dinner folk for breakfast and soon after they left, we departed for the ‘Fish River Canyon’. A shuttle full of departing hikers had already left for the start and we arrived as they were saddling up to move out/in/down… whatever!!!

    Karen and I both felt like such loosers.... like arriving at a Marathon start and you have left your running shoes behind or some or other BS reason why you cannot take part! There was huge excitement among most of them, but certainly a few were wearily peaking down over the edge and into the hole with much trepidation as they clung to the cable assisting them over the lip and way down. By all accounts the first day is spent just getting into and descending to the bottom of the canyon. 😳

    We spent the better part of Tuesday travelling to and back from the canyon. It is so incredible to have driven nearly 100km to the start, through massive tracts of sandy and stoney terrain mixed up with rocky outcrops. Distant hills and further back, mountain ranges of many different hues of blue and depending on the light, grey to black. Quiver Trees here on the reverse side of the Richtersveld ranges are sparse and ailing, much like their fellows on the southern side of the range. Not a soul to be seen anywhere en route! Sheer bliss! For that matter, not even an animal anywhere.🤔

    We returned to Ai/Ai's thrilled that we had made the effort to get to the canyon. Without doubt the most stunning canyon in the southern continent and whilst probably not of 'Grand Canyon' status, is really does have the feel of such.

    Being the loosers we are, we slunk into camp and undercover of Spa Towels, we limped just like everyone else into the hot water pools. The water here in Ai/Ai's is naturally heated and passes just past the devil himself and reaches ground level at 68°C!!! No artificial heating and only filtered and chlorinated for human use. The water in the pool does not get 'recycled' into the pool again, so fresh water flows in permanently. Karen and I, for most of the time sat by ourselves neck deep water well over 40*C. The Indoor pools are housed in this huge covered hall the temperature of the fountain water in excess of 50*C! We snuck in and enjoyed a few beers and ciders, all on our lonesome.

    Later we 'braaied' and settled in for the night!

    Love, Peace and Light !

  • Day 78 - Augrabies Falls

    1 Juni 2022, Afrika Selatan ⋅ ☀️ 16 °C

    We left Ai/Ai's at just after 08:30, north east toward Grünau and via
    Karasburg to the Namibian and RSA Border at Ariamsvlei/Nakop. On the N10 towards Upington we turned south on a typical RSA gravel road 😖 from Lutzputs to Neushoek. Back west through Kakamas on the N14 and north again on the R359 to Augrabies Falls.

    Along all the roads we past giant 'Sociable Weaver' nests stacked on telephone poles, electricity poles and anything that resembles anything upright! At least when Telcom and Eskom have finally thrown in the towel, here in the Southern Kalahari there is still use for their unsightly poles!

    We checked in at the SANPARKS Reserve in Augrabies and at the same time booked for the next two nights at the 'Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park' (formerly the Kalahari/Gemsbok Park).

    Armed with a 'Buffelsfontein' RTD 'Branas and Cola', we walked the boardwalk to all the vantage points around the falls. Really so beautiful to see this in full-spuit!

    We arrived in time to pitch another 'one-night-stand' camp and took in the Reserve and Orange River in full flight down the Augrabies Gorge. Like the sea and Orange on previous nights, again the Orange River here in Augrabies gorge thundered down with a deafening roar, all night! Years ago Paul and I also visited here, only to witness a sorry little trickle in the days when the Gariep Dam hardly ever reached capacity. Now as you know, numerous sluice gates were opened up stream, and many other dams overflowing as a result of a very wet summer inland. The weather pattern that destroyed much of Durban and surrounds was also responsible for downpours over the entire catchment area.

    Now on this very trip of our's, we thankfully dodged all that excessive weather through the country and particularly in Kwa-Zulu Natal!

    On Wednesday night in Augrabies we spent the coldest night in the caravan, like ever! Karen's App indicated a low of 2° but mine was closer by two.... a low of 0°!!!

    FFS…. Freezing!!!!🥶🥶🥶

  • Day 79 - Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park

    2 Juni 2022, Afrika Selatan ⋅ ☀️ 18 °C

    If you are all squealing about last nights temperature, try sleeping in the caravan at nought, nil, zero degrees centigrade🥶🥶🥶 Armed with a tracksuit, socks, a Duvet, two extra blankets and even our 'Goose Down Puf-Jacket's' we survived the night! Haven't slept out so cold in living memory!!!🥶🥶🥶

    Eventually we plucked up enough courage to brave the elements and packed up, showered again to warm up and left.

    Back onto the N14 we needed supplies (including Droewors that the monkeys stole) from Upington via Kakamus and Keimus. (Hope I spelled those correctly, 'cos they dont sound 'kosher' at all)!!!

    Back to the inhabitants! Hundreds of people walking the streets and the gravel pavements, have indented paths from all directions leading to, not two but three bottle stores in the main street only!? It would appear that school was out or even school-holiday's... kids everywhere!?

    Roughly twenty kilo's outside of Upington and to the North West, probably 10km from the road is a tower. All of 205m high, with the brightest major flood-lights burning in the middle of the day! At the base were thousands of solar panels. After 'GOOGLING', Karen edtablished it to be a Solar Power Tower (Khi Solar One) KSO generates 650 GWh's of power, annually feeding power into the grid! Now that doesn't mean anything to me, but what I do know is, just those lights alone are monsters!!!

    Somewhere in the middle of the Namib a few days ago, I noticed a message on the 'Fortuners' dashboard that my "Key Battery" was soon to be unserviceable!!! Not where... in the middle of the Desert😳 Luckily we made it to Toyota in Upington, who willingly replaced it FOC!!!

    After refueling again (and I am not even counting those stops and R-Value's anymore we headed for the Kalahari or the 'Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park'....if you will!!!

    A stunning tar road (R360) north out of Upington=> Askham=> Twee Rivieren, inside the Park.

    We took up the suggestion of a Springbok Pie at a roadside place just before the entrance to the park. Just before, as you know in this neck if the woods, could mean anything from 5 to 500 miles. Our first stop was incorrectly mapped and we ended up eating a microwaved wrong pie, in the wrong town, about 50 miles wrong! Now, I don’t normally battle with 'Heart- burn' as a rule, but if they had just sold one 'Rennies' tablet with my first Springbok Pie, I wouldn't feel so debilitated 5 hours later... now would I?

    After re-confirming the exact name, and a proper ‘6 digit grid reference!, we found the correct pie! By now I was already sweating and only hoping that 'heart-burn' would be the least of all the evils about to spoil my day! I wolfed the second pie and we kept the leftovers, for lunch in the Kgalagadi tomorrow. Depending on how much discomfort I experience, may mean leaving it on the side of the road to give some mangy hyena a dose too! Pity we didn't have it available to feed to the Baboons in Ai/Ai's a few nights ago!!!

    As we moved Northwest of Upington, gradually the terrain changed, and more and more we could see dunes of different colours, profusely covered by knee to hip high, silver/white grass. The recent rains all the way here have transformed, previously 'desert-like' monotony into beautiful lush, soft grass undulations all over.

    We arrived shortly before 17:00 and successfully checked in. Surprised at the nearly full campsite, we were satisfied that we had booked and paid the previous day in Augrabies Falls for the next two nights! Clearly this is the 4X4 and 'Camping Playground' for the Cape, as Kruger Park is to Gautengers!

    We anticipated another cold night, which in fact it was... 0° again 🥶🥶🥶

    Love, Peace and Light!

  • Day 80 - Kgalagadi “Gemsbok” Park

    3 Juni 2022, Afrika Selatan ⋅ ☀️ 20 °C

    Another bitter night, again last night!!

    This morning we were up and about after 08:00, but not before the F1 'wanna bees', clanging and shouting and revving and racing to be first out at 07:30 when the gate opens!!!😖😖😖

    We were gone the entire day and drove 200km in the park and not even 1/5 of the map covered! From early, and the start was cold, we saw the odd Gemsbok and Wildebeest but soon herds developed and started moving around. Water holes were packed out with both, and throughout the day especially through the afternoon. The route back from along and inside the 'Nasop Riverbed' was well stocked with animals, but mainly the two above, which was great to see such massive herds of Gemsbok! The odd Red Hartebees made a showing along with much birdlife, Eagles, Vultures, Cori- Bustards, Korhaans, Secretary birds and all the rest if the culprits! Nearly took out a Wild Cat that thought about crossing in front of me, but a last second skid, 'mis-paw' and it slid into a cloud of his own dust, luckily for him altered his tack and darted away! (Check the pic's).

    No monkeys or baboons here, so all was well at camp when we returned!

    It truly is special to be able to take a day out, to not see anybody else and just take it all in, more than likely for the very last time🤷🏻‍♂️😖

    I know I am repeating myself about all these awesome places, all with their own beauty and charm, but that is just the way it is! Not for one minute do I say everyone should do a trip like this, although it has been so special! The point I make is, there are so many such amazing places in this country that most of us have never even seen or experienced before. There are even more places that all of us, don't even know exist! Many of the places we have visited, we only found out about by default and mainly from people we don't even know. All it does take is just to get off our asses and do something, anything rather than sitting and watching it all on DSTv!😖

    I/we have more than learnt a lesson, and only hope not too late 😖

    Later this evening, such a pathetic looking slither of a Moon. As it wanes and disappears, it pulls over a cloak of even more stars than in the Richtersveld. The evening is early and already very cool.... another night out in the freezer!🥶 This being our second last night of awesome freedom and being left alone, may sound selfish but it is just the most unbelieveable tonic for anyone! 'Club Med' once used the slogan...
    "The Antidote for Civilization"... well this is it!

    Love, Peace and Light.

  • Day 81 - Red Sands/Kuruman

    4 Juni 2022, Afrika Selatan ⋅ ☀️ 17 °C

    The facilities at the 'Tweerivieren Camp' in the 'Kgalagadi Reserve' are all A1, bathrooms well serviced and a fully equipped Laundry with washing machine and tumble-drier. All really fancy however the campsite is gravel (I suppose to be expected in the desert)🤔 In addition to the parade ground style caravan park, the only down was late at night hearing dogs (domestic) barking and early morning roosters (also domestic) crowing.... just can't be right here, in an authentic and iconic landmark🤷🏻‍♂️ To get rid of them might just incur the wrath of Labour Unions and wa,wa,wa!!!

    Just one other observation and this was not the first example, in SANPark Reserves the fastest moving vehicles are olive green or beige with 'SANParks' proudly painted on the door! Much like Traffic Officers in South Africa don't wear safety belts, nor do SANParks bakkies have speedometer's?

    On this point, I am again reminded about Car Rental's. Other than a 'Company Car' there is no standard vehicle that can better out-perform a private 4X4 than a 'Car Rental' standard saloon vehicle, when it comes to speed, four- wheel drive capabilities and doughnut's!!!

    Early this morning it was 'Mother' cold and we were so reluctant to disengage from our bedding. Eventually we succumbed and tentatively disembarked. Exactly as my Dad 'Ted' would have commented when it was so cold.... "My fingers are stupid" he would say! Damn right Dad..precisely!!!

    All said and done, back onto the road to Upington via the 'Red Dune Route'! Though the red sand was in fact visible at close range, from a distance they all looked lush with long grass and in the early light, stunningly beautiful! A hundred kilometers or more we passed through dunes left and right. We remarked how awesome it would be to see them naked. Not for a moment would we wish the rain away but to just see these massive dunes in the flesh would have been memorable!

    We dropped into Upington for some goodies and fuel, and headed for 'Red Sands', a campsite just off the N10 about 15km before Kuruman. After how many weeks in the sand and dust, we were not too sure about 'Red Sand's' Campsite ? This spot had been recommended by a number of fellow campers, as being the place to overnight. True story, a green grassed campsite and very acceptable ablutions! By a longshot not overcrowded and apart from the screaming staff who's racket, fortunately subsided as the sun set!😥live was good.

    In the cool of the sunset and as inversion took its toll, it was going to be another bleak night out! We sat quite emotionally and pondered the last 80 nights mainly under the stars, living in our caravan from braai-to-braai and out of the 'pressure-cooker' especially prepared meals for days, we hit the long roads.

    At last we have sorted the two fridge/freezer appliances, the gas operation and who does what, when setting up camp! Like well oiled machines we have this waxed!

    Solemnly we sat beer and wine in hand and pondered our completely epic trip, journey and adventure! We were able to do more in three months than most get done in a life-time, we really did live.

    Our last destinations are to drop in at Vince and Jodi to say our final ‘goodbyes’ and collect all the extra camping gear we palmed off on them back in Munster, all those months ago! From there a few days with Paul and Lynette, to say goodbye and to see off Christiaan, who is returning to France 🇫🇷, for another rugby season!

    There after back to Nelspruit and Johan & Annatjie to round up our last business…. and ship out! 🇬🇧

    TRAMPS LIKE US

    In three months we visited almost every 'biosphere' possible in this great country and surrounds. The Oceans, the Mountains, the Grasslands, Forests and Deserts. We swam in the seas and lay in the desert sand, we experienced everyday people at work or not! We found ourselves in informal settlements, on farms, caves and harbours, villages, towns and cities. How many different cultures? I can't tell you!

    Tinkers, Tailors, Soldiers and Sailors, Rich men, Poor men, Fishermen, Beggar men and Thieves.... and every colour of the the rainbow! Every person, and we mingled with, all have a story to tell. Young, old, happy and sad, love them all! Hot days, cold days, rain and wind!

    Loved it all!

    Did we miss family and friends? Of course! Did we miss a home and comforts? Not at all! Are we sad it is all over? YES! Would we do it again? Anytime!

    TRAMP'S LIKE US...

    GRAND FINALÈ

    Solemnly at sunset on our final day we sat, beer and wine in hand and pondered our complete, epic trip, journey and adventure! We were able to do more in three months than most get done in a whole life-time and we really did live!

    It was very special road-tripping, camping, planning, swimming, running, climbing, hiking, scuba-diving, braaiing, living and just being who you really are, without any care in the world!

    Doing all this with Karen too, was very special. She was my co-pilot, my navigator, my eating, singing, laughing, drinking and loving partner and equal to any task! I couldn't have asked for a better companion and friend! Living together in the car all day and the 3mX4m caravan all night (and all the time with me and all my BS 🤔), takes a very special person!

    Like those Tsotsies on TV during the Kwa-Zulu plundering fiasco earlier this year, one said on national TV that, "They had never felt so free"😖😖😖 I too have never felt so free and even better, care-free! To wake up every morning knowing today will never be like yesterday and tomorrow, never like today! Every day was something new and everyday was real! We never once set an alarm clock in 3 months, and never did either of us feel under pressure to do or not to do anything ever!

    We are both most grateful to;
    * Johan & Annatjie,
    * Vince & Jodi,
    * Ray & Liz Keeny
    * Bollie & Ghizlain
    * Koos & Monique
    * Dawie & Sheila
    * Gavin & Sandi
    * Trevor & Rina
    * Paul & Lynette
    (in order of our visit to them and some in advance!)

    To tell it absolutley the way it is, was so awesome seeing you all, your hospitality and kindness toward the "Tramps like Us" was never in any doubt.

    For putting a solid roof over our heads and for providing square meals, great companionship and for sharing your homes so openly, at the drop of a hat! You are all wonderful, real people and irreplaceable, genuine friends!

    Thank you to everyone who has followed us constantly and have chimed in, as and when! Of course there were also the 'Stalkers' or 'Predators'.... 'Roofkykers' as Karen would call you, and we love you all too!

    On the 'Find Penguins' App, we can view how many read the post, and didn't necessarily 'Like' or 'Unlike', but just viewed! We couldn't see who you are, but loved having you all along, as well!

    Innitially, one of my biggest fears was, should we get onto serious life and death trouble along the way, what would you all have said? "Mark, you are an irresponsible idiot, taking Karen into these most dangerous and inhospitable places in Africa?" My mate Johan offered me a 'Paintball Gun' with hundreds of solid plastic rounds to take with, which I have to admit I did pack in. Not once did we ever feel in danger, at all! To the extent that I didn't even take it out of the box👍

    And so, all that is good must at some time, come to an end! 🥹

    In conclusion, we have such a special, beautiful country and with all its challenges particularly in relation to the environment, we can only hope and pray that it can remain so, and very apparently get even better! Without stating the obvious, all efforts toward 'people' finding each other and eradicating this horrific poverty, which we personally witnessed in abundance, is critical. Any and all interventions to eliminate 'climate change', pollution of our land, sea and air needs to be embraced by every single person living in this country. Only if every person and every single household can just tackle their own bad habits and adopt a singular, permanent and conscientious effort to clean up and maintain a perfect environment, will we be able to see this out and succeed, for our children and Grandchildrens sake. Some scars are sadly permanent and we need to stop them being repeated. Semi permanent scars, like redundant, useless telephone poles and wires and let's be frank, will never be used again. We need to have them removed! If only we could encourage people to engage in a culture of not even discarding a single bottle and tin, piece of chewing- gum and cigarette stub! Household refuse, just dumped anywhere was the biggest eyesore on our entire journey.

    The most distressing point on this trip however, was people! This country, this continent (and of course the world) just cannot afford more people. In every town and city in every province there are people and more people!

    In Africa there will never be enough food, jobs, medical, care of the elderly, education, gender based violence prevention, less poverty, houses, streets, money etcetera, not to mention water, electricity and sanitation.

    Only less will ever mean, more!

    That was a proper honour and privilege to be able to do, complete, and enjoy, before it is too late!

    Much love to you all and bless this beautiful country and it's people!🇿🇦

    Love, Peace and Light.
