Sibenik

We stopped in Sibenik to break our journey from Tupeci to Zadar. We visited St James cathedral (Katedrala sv. Jakov) along with its accompanying museum which had some great interactive exhibits. The city was much quieter than Dubrovnik or Split (no cruise ships maybe) and was much more Venetian in its architecture.Read more

Spiders in Zadar!!

As we came into the city we spotted a poster for a special exhibition of live spiders and scorpions. Fiffy thought a lot of them were cute either because they were small or because they were fluffy!

Church of St Donatus, Zadar

This church (Crkva sv. Donata) is no longer used as a place of worship. It dates from the 9th century and is Pre-Romanesque. Its round design and gallery were very unusual but made for some great photos!Read more

Sea Organ

Very bizarre!! Part of the sea front in Zadar has been constructed as a sea organ. Below the low tide level, there are a series of pipes that have openings in the walkway. As the waves move, these produce sound.Read more

Zadar sunset

I'd heard that the sunset is the best in Croatia. We were not disappointed! The seafront was packed but we could still get a good view. After sundown there is an art installation made up of solar panels and LEDs that lights up having charged up during the day.Read more

We missed a turning and ended up at Senj fortress. Amazing views and some interesting artefacts from a shipwreck.

Rain!!

When we came up from the cave it was raining really heavily. It didn't look like stopping anytime soon so we made a dash for the car. We were drenched within seconds and the car was a bit of a walk away.
We then drove down into town for about 20 minutes through thunder and lightning right overhead. When we arrived in town we parked by the sea and there were some big waves. As I stepped out of the car there was an immense wave that soaked me all over again, and the inside of the car!Read more

Had a long delay at the Croatian Slovenian border. Assumed it was border control but came through without incident but found this round the corner! Had to take a huge detour but got there in the end.

Lovely day trip to Trieste in Italy. The main square was beautiful and there was a wedding about to start in the cathedral. Everyone was dressed so elegantly, at the wedding and generally around town!

After our day in Trieste we took the short drive over to Koper in Slovenia. We were only there for a short time but it was a lovely place. We had a walk around the old town then a meal in what we thought was a traditional Slovenian restaurant. Turned out it was Bosnian!Read more

Torpedo launch station

Interesting derelict torpedo factory and launch station. A nice security guard spoke to us as we went in, we weren't clear whether we were allowed or not, he patted his head which we think was a warning that things might collapse on us so we should be careful! As it happens, the heavens opened and we got absolutely drenched running back to the car!Read more

Adrenaline park

Slightly bored on a rainy day so we went to the local Adrenaline park. Fiffy and I attempted a high ropes course, definitely just an attempt as it was clearly designed for taller people! We stopped before we reached the zip line as the storm returned and the lightning was a bit too close for comfort when I was up a tree tethered with a metal cable!Read more

Brijuni

The Brijuni archipelago is a National park just off the coast of the Istria peninsula, near Pula. We visited on a guided tour which included the crossing by boat, a road train tour and entry to all the attractions. The islands have Roman and Byzantine ruins and the architecture has Austria-Hungarian, Venetian and Yugoslav elements due to the area being under different ruling over the years. Brijuni was the summer residence for Tito for many years.Read more

Great day in Pula to see the Arena, apparently second biggest after the Colosseum. Loads of Roman ruins bits and bobs around the city. In the evening Imagine Dragons were playing the Arena so we listened for a while and enjoyed the atmosphere.Read more

Abandoned complex

On our drive into town we stopped off at an abandoned area near the coast. The buildings were derelict and we had no idea what their purpose was. Perhaps an old holiday camp?

Zerostrasse is a complex of tunnels built underneath the city as an WW2 air raid shelter. At the top of the city was an old fort with great views. After a lovely seafood lunch it was time to head to the airport.Read more
