  • Stockholm to Kiruna and Icehotel

    January 23, 2024 in Sweden ⋅ ⛅ -6 °C

We enjoyed a Swedish breakfast in the airport lounge before travelling on to Kiruna in the Arctic Circle. There were wonderful views of the snowy landscape below from the plane. It was a chilly minus 6 degrees on our arrival at Kiruna airport, and we had to walk from the plane over the snow covered tarmac to reach the terminal building. Having arrived at Icehotel a little too early for check-in, we had a chance to look around some of the amazing ice sculptures in the cold rooms of Icehotel 34.Read more

  • Ice Rooms

    January 23, 2024 in Sweden ⋅ ☁️ -5 °C

A selection of our favourite ice rooms in both Icehotel 34 and Icehotel 365. In all, 1200 ice blocks and 25,000 cubic metres of ‘snice’ are used to create the hotel each year. The wonderful ice sculptures are created from scratch by guest artists each year. It takes two weeks for the artists to create each room using 8 tons of ice. Each unique room is accessed via long cavernous ice corridors, supported by crystal clear ice columns. The celebration room was especially beautiful with decorative ice friezes on the walls and gorgeous pews - truly spectacular.Read more

  • A Beautiful Day in the Arctic Circle

    January 24, 2024 in Sweden ⋅ ☀️ -25 °C

We awoke this morning to a beautifully clear day. After breakfast we collected our warm weather clothing walked down onto the frozen River Torne and watched the sun rising over the hills…at about 11.30! After a lunch of Swedish meatballs in the restaurant, we joined our first excursion, travelling by a snowmobile drawn sleigh to a local Sami herder village to learn about the reindeer and the Sami culture. We had the chance to feed the reindeer with moss and lichen and realised what entertaining animals they are. Finally we had a fun reindeer sleigh ride around a track followed by a snack of reindeer meat cooked over a log fire in a traditional Sami teepee.Read more

  • Northern Lights Safari

    January 24, 2024 in Sweden ⋅ 🌙 -25 °C

In the evening, we went for an exhilarating northern lights safari, driving our own snowmobile. Stopping off half way round our route in a cosy remote cabin, Alva our guide cooked a meal of goulash followed by panacotta with blueberries. As we stepped out from the lodge to return to the IceHotel, the northern lights appeared in the sky! Despite the full moon, the lights continued to appear several times as we travelled through the snow laden landscape back to the hotel.Read more

  • Dog Sledding

    January 25, 2024 in Sweden ⋅ ☀️ -25 °C

Another crystal clear day - the light is quite extraordinary today. We checked out of our warm suite this morning before joining a dogsledding trip. This was spectacular, albeit freezing cold at minus 25 degrees! The panorama across the frozen landscape from the sled was spectacular with far reaching views to snow clad mountains and forests in the distance. Our lunch stop was in a cosy, remote forest hut where we were served mushroom soup then reindeer mince, mashed potatoes and lingen berries. This was followed by coffee and cinnamon buns. The teams of dogs were amazing; full of energy and bursting to run onwards. At the end of the trip, we visited the dog kennels and learned about how they train the dogs.Read more

  • Overnight in the Ice Rooms

    January 25, 2024 in Sweden ⋅ 🌙 -5 °C

This evening, we moved into our cold room, Toybox, for the night. Our en-suite shower room was spacious and warm with a small sitting area and warm drinks. We took advantage of a bit of spare time to have another look around the ice rooms before heading out in the icy evening for the walk to dinner in the Old Homestead restaurant. Returning from dinner we snuggled down into our sleeping bags, arranged on reindeer skins for the night at minus 5 degrees.Read more

  • Final Day of our Arctic Adventure

    January 26, 2024 in Sweden ⋅ ☁️ -25 °C

This morning we awoke, wrapped up cosily in our sleeping bags. The night spent in the ice room was a truly amazing experience and surprisingly restful. Our sleeping bags were covered in a light layer of ice crystals that had fallen from the ceiling overnight. We dressed in the warm en-suite bathroom, before heading off for an early breakfast.
After checking out of the hotel we went for a final wander on the frozen river. Today the weather is dull and cloudy but still bitterly cold. To complete our Icehotel experience we visited the ice bar and drank cocktails from glasses made of ice cut from the river!
Having travelled back to a rather chaotic Kiruna airport, our plane to Stockholm arrived a little late and was then further delayed for over an hour while it was de-iced on the runway. Arriving back in Stockholm later than planned meant we had to skip our time in the lounge, but we did enjoy the meal and drinks on the plane!
