  • Riad arrival

    October 15, 2025 in Morocco ⋅ ☁️ 21 °C

Easy pick up and mental drive through the twisty turny streets of Marrakesh to arrive at our Riad home in the centre of the Medina. Surprise dinner by host and dietary nutritionist Julien with 4 courses of authentic dishes where we had to guess the ingredients - courgette and orange cumin mousse triangle, turkey cinnamon and quince tagine(best and most moist turkey I ever had), and aubergine lemon juice sorbet. Crazy. Followed by tour from Hussein of the proper authentic 16th century Berber riad (translation: internal garden) with limestone interior walls to keep humidity out, and beautifully decorated with authentic Moroccan bespoke wooden carved doors and hundreds of little hang out spots and tiny secret doors and passages to navigate the whole place, as traditionally would have housed a large family of all generations. This specific one had been a royal family riad! Luke’s French speaking has got us very far and my thirst for a beer (which can’t be served within the medina as there are Mosques on every corner) has had many laughs. Brekky on the rooftop with veggie eggs, yoghurt, fruit, jams, pancakes and obvi some Moroccan tea has set us up for a big day ahead!Read more

  • Flea market, street food and posh dinner

    October 16, 2025 in Morocco ⋅ ⛅ 24 °C

Headed out to explore the area, and it was absolutely mental. Chickens, horses and donkeys running around, mopeds flying round corners, got clipped on the arm a couple times, tiny workshops, food stalls and corner shops hidden in every cranny. sparks flying from metal workers and bike mechanics. Lots of activists stencil street art. Popped into a huge flea market where each souk is selling different bespoke items or just random materials and bric a brac. There are dedicated alley ways full of wood and metal and textiles - a designers dream. Stopped in a ceramics shop, where Aziz invited us to enjoy some fresh mint tea (or as he called it - Moroccan whiskey) with absolutely no agenda at all and left us to hang out. We have met some of the nicest people here. Street food lentils and chicken lemon stew, dip in the pool and cards at home before heading to our posh dinner rec from Freya. Authentic morrocan live music and a cocktail on the roof before the most banging monkfish tagine and lamb tagine we have ever eaten. Chill back to the gaff and sat up chatting with Hussein for hours about him leaving his mountain hometown to Casablanca at 14 years old with 50 dirhams (£4) to his name. What a guy. Time for some touristy shit today.Read more

  • Markets, museums and gardens

    October 17, 2025 ⋅ ☀️ 24 °C

Headed into the centre to see the mayhem really unfold. Hugely more touristy than where we were yesterday, lots of ‘authentic restaurants’ where you could also buy burgers and tacos lol, lots of locals trying to mug us off, somehow started getting taken to someone’s ’sisters jewellery shop’ further and further down some back alley quickly made a U-turn as was about to get weird. A lady physically took my hand and started painting it with henna, and proceeded to claim it was gunna be 800dh (£65 lol) - this situation birthed me and lu’s first official holiday domestic. But the energy of the place was electric and was like nothing I had experienced before. Sweet crispy almond cinnamon chicken pie for lunch and into the Jardin Marjorelle, a beautiful outdoor oasis, blooming with plantlife and bright blue architecture. Traditional Berber museum within the gardens containing jewels, slippers and tools of the Berber culture, as well as the Yves Saint Laurent museum (as he helped to restore the gardens) with an exhibition of Hamish Bowles’ collection - stunning. YSL briefly lived in marrakech and lots of later work was inspired by the cities’ rich colours. Feet dead from walking, rooftop sunset, chill dinner and early night before moving out to the sticks in the desert!Read more

  • Tagerdert Lodge

    October 19, 2025 in Morocco ⋅ ☀️ 28 °C

After a bit of a mare organising a car rental, we finally got one through our riad host Julien, cute lil automatic and drove 40 min south of Marrakesh to a tiny village called Oumnass. Quiet and quaint and just the relaxing we needed. Tagine dinners on the terrace every night, crazy sunsets, card games, evening mint teas and lots of poolside chillin.Read more

Final day spent at the lake! We thought we could swim there but turns out you aren’t allowed so booked a pool day at Le Flouka Hotel, driving through the desert was so cool, and the lake was beautiful. Lunch fish carpaccio, aubergine tartare and some chippies. Early start to drive back to Marrakech to return the car, and catch our flight home!
