  • Portland Observatory

    September 10, 2019 in the United States ⋅ ⛅ 17 °C

The Portland Observatory was built in 1807 by Captain Lemuel Moody to serve as a communication station for Portland Harbor. Portland Observatory was one of the earliest marine signal stations in the United States, and it is the last known to survive. The Observatory's location on Munjoy Hill gave it a clear view of vessels approaching Portland Harbor. The Observatory contributed to the prosperity of Portland Harbor as a vital center of maritime commerce during the "Golden Age of Sail."Read more

  • Timberwind

    September 11, 2019 in the United States ⋅ ⛅ 23 °C

After lingering for a while over breakfast at our B&B, we headed out to make the most of our last afternoon in Portland. First we hit the water on Timberland, a schooner built in 1931.

The Portland Schooner Company describes the outing as “A two-hour sail on Casco Bay, the perfect way to experience the beauty of the Maine coast, complete with lighthouses, seals, seabirds and the rugged coastline”

It was a beautiful trip. Nobody narrating but made themselves available for questions. Enjoyed the wind in our face and the sound of the sails flapping in the breeze.

There was also a little jaw flapping by a gal named Michele from Long Island, NY, who befriended us. Her partner Marty stayed back on the cruise ship to read. (He is a librarian.) the woman loves cruising and has been on 156 cruises since 1981. 😳

  • Duckfat

    September 11, 2019 in the United States ⋅ ⛅ 27 °C

Small European-leaning sandwich shop & cafe known for its duck-fat Belgian fries & milkshakes.

We shared the duckfat fries with a sampler of different sauces and split a Cuban and Meatloaf sandwich. We also split the original Duckfat Vanilla gelato milkshake.

Go big and go home. Good thing we’ve been doing a lot of walking.

  • A Very Special Commendation

    September 11, 2019 in the United States ⋅ ⛅ 34 °C

Once we got to security at the airport Brian and I were separated as I had TSA pre-check and he did not. As I was going through the security scanner, it beeped. LOUD! I came thru and made a comment about how I had forgotten to take off my fitness tracker. Perhaps that was what caused the machine to beep. The TSA agents said no that I had randomly been selected to have my electronics checked further. I told her I felt SO special and that maybe I should get a sticker. Well, one of the TSA agents walked over and gave me one.

As I was exiting the plane in Atlanta, one of the flight attendants said he didn’t realize that we had an air marshal on board. I had to tell him I was a JUNIOR marshal. Well, actually, I was a junior TSA officer. Apparently my imposing presence (must be from the 30 years in the classroom) led him to that conclusion. I did not bother to correct this assumption.

  • Walking on Satellite Beach

    October 25, 2019 in the United States ⋅ ⛅ 28 °C

A lovely walk along the beach. They overcast skies and gusty winds kept us comfortably cool. Although poor Carla got popped in by a seagull. Interestingly enough, the seagull was a good distance away, but those gusty winds were responsible for the tragic misdirection.Read more

  • Kennedy Space Center

    October 26, 2019 in the United States ⋅ 🌧 28 °C

Even though it was a gray and drizzly day, we enjoyed our trip out to Kennedy Space Center. The first thing we did was to take a bus which drove us out to the launch pad area. We got to see the humongous Vehicle Assembly Building, the crawler transporter which took the shuttles to the launch pad and the launch pads themselves. I was surprised to find out that there were multiple launch pads. One has been leased by Elon Musk and SpaceX. And who knew that the KSC is on Merritt Island which is National Wildlife Refuge and big eagle breeding area?Read more
