Day 44- Exploring A Coruña

Another wonderful day enjoying the beautiful city of A Coruña.
We took our time getting up and enjoyed a light breakfast in our room since we knew we had a big lunch planned. Our first stop was the Church of Santiago, where I received my final Camino stamp—a special keepsake to remember this incredible journey. It felt like the perfect way to close that chapter of our adventure.
Afterward, we wandered through the charming streets of the Old Town, did a little shopping, and found a café where we sat with a cup of coffee, simply watching the world go by. A huge Royal Caribbean cruise ship was in port, so the city was buzzing with visitors. The weather couldn’t have been more beautiful—clear blue skies, warm sunshine, and a lively atmosphere that made it a joy to just sit and take it all in.
Of course, no shopping excursion would be complete without popping into a few more stores. Gina somehow managed to find yet another adorable pair of shoes—I’m beginning to think it’s her superpower!
For lunch, we went to Comarea Marina, a restaurant that had been highly recommended to us. The setting was beautiful, with wonderful views overlooking the water, and the seafood fideuà was absolutely delicious. The portion was enormous, so we boxed up half of it and later gave it to someone we felt could really use a good meal.
After lunch—yes, more shopping—we walked to the Estrella Galicia brewery for a tour. I really didn’t know what to expect, but it turned out to be fascinating. Founded in 1906 by José María Rivera Corral after returning from Cuba and Mexico, Estrella Galicia has remained in the hands of the same family for generations through Hijos de Rivera. It’s still brewed in A Coruña using local water, carefully selected malts, and hops, making it a true Galician beer.
The best part came at the end of the tour. We each got to pour our own draft beer before sitting down for a guided tasting that paired several of their beers with different cheeses. My favorite was the rich and flavorful 1906 Black beer—absolutely delicious!
Needless to say, after all those samples we had enjoyed a little more beer than we had planned, so we wisely grabbed an Uber back to the harbor. We finished off the afternoon with a delicious ice cream , my favorite Rocher.
We called it an early night—or at least early by Spanish standards, around 9:30 p.m. My plan was to wake up at 3:00 a.m. to watch Argentina play agsinst Algeria, but unfortunately I couldn’t find the match on any of the television channels or streaming apps that normally work for me. Instead, I texted back and forth with my family, who kept me updated throughout the game. I finally gave up at halftime and decided sleep was the better option.
The first thing I did the next morning was watch the highlights, and wow—what a game! Argentina won 3–0. I only wish I could have watched it live. Hopefully they can keep the momentum going throughout the World Cup.
