  • Honduras

    14 Juni 2022, Honduras ⋅ 🌧 20 °C

201 years ago in 1821 Costa Rica, Honduras, Guatemala, Nicaragua and El Salvador gained independence from Spain. Although all countries have developed differently, going through the reigns of different dictators, military generals, civil wars and drug cartels they share a common Mayan and Spanish heritage. You will often come across people in indigenous Mayan clothing (especialy in Guatemala lesser in Honduras) while they wear a Christian cross necklace simultaneously.

Our short stop in Copan led us to ancient Mayan ruins (a central spot of rule in the past) and a wonderful hot spring in the jungle, where already Mayans used to meditate at (a heavy tropical rainfall accompanied our session there to complete the experience).

  • El Salvador: Surfing El Tunco

    15 Juni 2022, El salvador ⋅ 🌧 28 °C

El Salvador has some good and bad reputation around it:
+ It is the first country to declare bitcoin legal tender (they use usd as their innate currency)
    - It has a situation with two rivalling gangs (13 and 18 identifiable by tattoes, which again made the current president incarcerate many tattoed people even completely harmless ones, stirring human rights activism). The 13/18 tattoes are earned by atrocious acts, such as murdering a rival.
    - It has very few indigenous people (or the people have few such roots), as a ruling general in the 30ties outlawed being indigenous and hunted such..
+ The country is beautiful (lots of Mayan ruins and volcanoes) and the people are very welcoming. They just hosted the world surf league too!

  • Culture: Costa Rican Homestay

    25 Juni 2022, Kosta Rika ⋅ 🌧 26 °C

I was a tad unconvinced that the homestay organised will be authentic, but when I realised that noone there spoke any English, there was no cellular reception and each family had 4+ children a feeling of relieve went through me.

We spent a two days following a Costan Rican family through their daily routine (being a family of 10 the addition of us hardly had an impact on their routine). This included checking on the live stock (all families here have them), playing soccer, watching Spanish Tv, hosing down the motorbike, cooking tortillas and going to the market to sell chicken and eggs.

The families here have a very simple life, men work the fields, waking up at 4am, women cook and take care of the live stock (The chicken cooked for us was still breathing two hours before we ate). But we felt that everybody was connecting, mingling and meeting up constantly. The ties between these communities appear stronger than any big city neighbourhoods.

  • Costa Rica: Surf paradise Santa Teresa

    6 Juli 2022, Kosta Rika ⋅ 🌧 28 °C

Santa Teresa was supposedly started by Israeli, who built there own resorts back in the days and then the area expanded to become a surf haven today (its also full of Swiss!). Surf camps and restaurants/bars fill up the one main street, where quads, pick ups and motorbikes (all filled with surf board of course) pass each other.

I switched to short board here and got spilled and washed over quite a bit going to the line up. Losing the board in the impact zone definetely got my heart rate up to. I am still very beginner so can’t stand more than 1-2 actual waves for a few seconds, so I usually still spend half of the session in the white wash practising my technique.

It was fantastic connecting with Liza who is here for a longer time and seeing her sparkling with joy over her first own board 😃.

  • Costa Rica to Miami

    6 Juli 2022, Kosta Rika ⋅ 🌧 27 °C

Next to surfing, a trip trip to a lake full of bioluminiscent plankton was on the menu. The plankton uses the lighting up to scare of fish. So any movement (diving under water) will elicit a swarm of most happily dancing bright flashes of light around you.

The final days in Santa Teresa where marred by a dog bite, one that did weigh heavy on my peace of mind. It took quite dome deliboration and worrying to conclude that no post exposure vaccination is required:
    - 3 separate doctors told me it wasnt
    - The dog still lives today
    - The dog does not appear rabid
    - The bite only lead to a scratch
    - I am vaccinated (last march 2022)

  • Culture: From Dominican to New Orleans

    9 Juli 2022, Republik Dominika ⋅ ⛅ 27 °C

Five days of 5* resort should do the trick recharging travel and social batteries (hard to believe even a 9.5/10 extrovert such as me does have a limit to his social batteries). And finally I have visited a carribean island! I have learned that christopher columbus first set foot here - and met the Taíno culture. As opposed to the “Carrib” folks in the south east who were known to be aggressive cannibals (As displayed in the famous pirates of the carribean movie series), the Taíno were a rather peaceful society based on a matrilineal system, where the men lived separate whilst the women took care of organising society. The Spaniard wiped out 95%+ of Tainos with their advent (mainly due to transmitting diseases from pest/polio/measles ridden Europe).

Many words we use daily originate from Taíno language, including:

Barbecue, ananas, papaya, cannibal, canoe, cassava, guava, hammock, hurricane, iguana, manatee, mangrove, potato, savanna, and tobacco.

  • San Francisco

    19 Juli 2022, Amerika Serikat ⋅ ☀️ 23 °C

Finally reunited with loved ones, also meaning I have made it to half way on the world trip, we fall back into our pattern of shopping, hunting for the best Chinese restaurant and musicals. San Francisco is also the first place I wear my long underpants - a clothing piece I have yet had to wear, which put it dangerously close to being discarded.

SF is also where my late employers live, or lived. May he rest in peace.

  • Grand Canyon and LV 2

    11 Agustus 2022, Amerika Serikat ⋅ ⛅ 36 °C

The largest and vastest sights are kept for the end. After another beautiful night in a cabin in the wilderness, we stride along the paths of the grand canyon. Looking so many dozens of miles into the distance it feels as if one is looking at a postcard thats right in front of you.

We conclude our joint time with a last trip to Vegas.

  • First carribean cruise experience

    12 Agustus 2022, Amerika Serikat ⋅ ⛅ 26 °C

A cruise ship can be both the most boring place to be (which after 5 months of adventure and road trips and hiking is a welcoming refreshment) or one of the most fun if you let it be.

    Positives:
    - Everytime you look out you see the infinite ocean all the way to the horizon
    - Surprisingly good shows (The audience is a potential 6000 peole big after all)
    - Very friendly staff (many south east Asians). Note: Staff works 7(!) days a week 12h a day, for 6 months straight, then return home for 2 months. They do earn 2-3k US$ a month which can me comparatively great. They do have cinema, gym and leisure activities for staff but many simply choose to sleep in their free time.
    -Free food everywhere

    Negatives:
    - A mass tourism feeling (positive if you’re into that)
    - Definetely a good amount of heavy oil burnt (as opposed to a normal hotel resort). Roughly 4 liters per 15 m.
    - Not enough time to explore any ports at which you stop

Bonus: Some delayed content from Waterfalls in Costa Rica!

  • Nasa

    21 Agustus 2022, Amerika Serikat ⋅ ⛅ 30 °C

We head over to Nasa only one week before the launch of the Artemis mission’s first rocket - a circling of our moon. I must admit, I did get very excited seeing those original pieces of space history!

  • Vancouver: Helping Ursula home

    28 Agustus 2022, Kanada ⋅ ⛅ 15 °C

A detour to Vancouver is indicated. My aunt needs some aid and my father and me immediately head to Canada on the next flight to visit her. Fortunately she is able to leave the hospital soon and we explore british columbia while packing and preparing her things. Of which, her being a lifelong collector of art and antiques throughout the world, there is much.

I have also came to notice the resemblance this region has with Switzerland. High mountain ranges, fir and spruce forests and fancy ski resorts (Whistler). High prices levels. Some difference are obvious too: A very high Asian population, bear warnings (I tripped into one at night at the campsite) and the Ocean.

I also came in contact with hutterites in Squamish whom were wearing traditional dresses and headgown (much like Austrian traditional dresses). This group was on a ten days trip, a rare outing. I couldnt believe they shared their Instagram with me - they are from a very progressive tribe they said.

  • Philippines: Manila and Cebu

    14 September 2022, Filipina ⋅ ⛅ 29 °C

The philippines is a long time secret tipp for any Asia travellers. As friendly as the Thai, as modestly prices as Vietnam, as safe as Indonesia, top ranking beautiful islands and (in most parts) less touristic and full of bustling local life. The archipelago is so vast that is is simply impossible to visit any meaningfull amounts of this country if you dont have at least 2-3 months to explore.Baca selengkapnya

  • Philippines: Siar Gao

    20 September 2022, Filipina ⋅ ⛅ 30 °C

The surfer capital of the philippines with its cloud 9 had a different appeal to me all together. Local village and fiesta culture. I was fortunate enough to make friends with many locals/expats and experience a yearly fiesta, where people from all around come to General Luna. Everybody’s invited to join the party.

Other than that, the surfing was tough (I am a bit sick from the aircon bacteria) and the rocky ground makes for many a cut on legs and feet. But the waves are consistent and smooth, worth the risk!
