  • Lost Friends and Tastes

    April 2, 2022 in Singapore ⋅ ⛅ 27 °C

Long lost friends reunited and tastes recovered,
this is what the short visit to Singapore entails. Staying just one night with my schoolmate of late Liang Zhi, whom’s family I found was in good health and spirits, with the exception of their dog who is passing his last moments on the ground floor 🥲 (I remember her just being a puppy in 2008).

What immediately strucks me when I enter Singapore is the wonderful olfactory delights of its scent. Exotic and blossoming in its nature with the afterglow inviting you to a coveted moon-shine bathed jungle glade surrounded by tropical plants and flowers.

Or maybe its just carefully selected and then never changed airport fragrance.

  • Culture: Death Railway

    April 4, 2022 in Thailand ⋅ ⛅ 28 °C

ℹ️ Cultural/Historical posts will be tagged with “Culture”

The Thai-Burma railway, known as “Death Railway” was constructed during 1940-1943 by the Japanese to expand their war efforts to Burma, where the allies attacked Japanese forces from and where from the allies supplied China.
100’000 people said to have died in the construction, where Asians and Europeans were enslaved and worked to death by the Japanese.

  • Culture: Monks and Cooking

    April 6, 2022 in Thailand ⋅ ⛅ 30 °C

Time dive into some Thai culture! We visit the ancient capital of Thailand Sukhothai and its ancient palace grounds. Though those are mostly in ruins now, the cooking rituals we took part in sure aren’t! And believe it or not - the self cooked Thai food tastes absolutely on par with what we taste otherwise on the streets.

*Warning some explicit images of animal produce in the gallery*

    Sir Horsealots Research Diaries 🔬🐴
    i) Monks are not allowed to own money, hence they collect food in town every morning (they also only eat once a day). Every Thai male must become a temporary monk at a point in their lives (1 month?), our guide explains.
ii) Adding kaffir lime to food makes it smell Thai immediately (So does cilantro and lime but that could be confused with Mexican).
iii) Monks robe is orange/brown as they washed/dyed their clothes in curcuma after taking white cloth that got dirtied from the enwrapped bodies of the dead (Another consequence of monks not being able to purchase anything, though they probably receive cloth donations nowadays).
iv) Buddha always has hair/fire on his head as he has achieved success, monks are yet to reach enlightenment - therefore they are bald.
    v) Smile and the world smiles back at you

  • Elephant Sanctuary

    April 8, 2022 in Thailand ⋅ ⛅ 25 °C

The use of elephants has a long history in this region. They would be used exploitadly in wars, for carrying large objects, sustainably when their poo is used to smoke out mosquitos or create paper or touristicly to please, well, me and my group.

Interesting to note is that these elephants simply lived in the jungle during covid times for two years and now came back by themselves when the tourists (and mainly bananas) returned. They also leave the sanctuary to the jungle every night and come back by themselves in the morning.
Definetely more free than in a Zoo.

  • Off to Vietnam

    April 10, 2022 in Thailand ⋅ ⛅ 30 °C

After short contemplation to go to Korea instead of Vietnam (ultimately abandoned idea out of cost reasons), the trip continues to the communistic country of Vietnam, where we shall spend a full 3 weeks.

Arriving, I felt as if I just headed to China, streets are dirtier, people roudier, facades splattered with communist flags, Chinese symbols and light decoration.

  • Halong Bay

    April 13, 2022 in Vietnam ⋅ ☀️ 29 °C

Naturally, visiting the lime stone boulders and caves of unesco heritage site halong bay is a must.

There were hundreds of ships on the pier but only few left - we ended up joining a son (gay theater director) and a father (retired travelling sea merchant) on a boat. Fantastic stories were exchanged. Be it about the worlds most dangerous port being in the US (jacksonville, you dont even leave the boat), the story about how the theatre business works (really its a profit driven hard racket with merciless deals) or how it feels living six months on a boat (really its about being drunk all the time).Read more

  • The Vietnamese Alps Sapa

    April 16, 2022 in Vietnam ⋅ 🌧 20 °C

Sapa - The French came here a hundred years ago to establish an army outpost and bring christianity. Today is has seen a revival as a substitute alpine trip to Switzerland, for obvious reasons (the average Vietnamnese is too poor to travel outside the country). They even have Swiss companies build the gondola here!

The scale is immense, thousands of people storm these mountains every week, but only very few visit the local villages and check out the typical way of life.

  • Hue Freedom Riders

    April 21, 2022 in Vietnam ⋅ 🌧 23 °C

After arriving in Hue we quickly got entangled in a spontaneous motorbike tour through the backlands and Ho Chi Min trail. Our guide told us his backstory:
    Stop school at 13
Work as shoe polisher till 18
    Construction worker till 24
    Moped taxi driver till 28
Bike trail tour guide till Today

    Sir Horsealot’s research Diaries 🔬🐴
    i) Vietnam has one of the highest street death rates, owing to the fact there are almost no regulations and a lot of motorbikes (car import taxes), which usually have entire families on them (We saw a teenage daughter around 15 driving her little brothers and mom around, on a moped).
ii) Car honks serve as substitute for missing regulation, traffic lights and lack of attentiveness when driving (honking every 10 seconds is pretty standard here).
iii) Vietnam has 54 minority tribes with their own languages and culture/dresses. The government slowly relocates them. Especially so the children go to school.
iv) If you are unsure how much something should cost, simply ask any local other than the person selling it to you (works in every country).

  • Judo and Tailoring

    April 25, 2022 in Vietnam ⋅ ⛅ 28 °C

The challenge to go for a Judo training in HCM city is taken very seriously by me. So seriously in fact, that I have decided to wear the black belt at the training when I got there. This lead to everyone greeting me with a respectful bow, after all this was already my second Judo class! (Kati, who a tually does hold the first dan black belt was given the white belt).

Apparently all the grand masters of Vietnam came just to see us, or at least wu (the master from the Swiss school) made them do so.

In Hoi An, I made two tailored suits with fine cloth from Italy (so I was told). 300 usd each including additional pants and shirt.

  • Singapore Leg 2

    April 26, 2022 in Singapore ⋅ ⛅ 30 °C

Singapore is the closest to a second home I have. I have travelled here at least 10 times, studied here, made many friends I still see till today, expanded my taste buds, had my first kiss or discovered playing piano.

I am so grateful that my friend all come out to see me, when we get older we get entangled in many responsibilities and lose the regular touch points we used to have with our social circles (first we end school, then we end hobbies or weekly community events). Some of my friends themselves have not seen each other for 7y+ and it really felt like that school reunion that was never organised for them too.

Bonus: we got to meet at Philips (The only one of us still to play regular soccer) new restaurant Omote, Its absolutely delicious - check it out!

  • Last days of Singapore for Kati

    May 1, 2022 in Singapore ⋅ ☁️ 29 °C

One says that Singapore can be seen in a few days, thats partially true. What cannot be tasted within a few days are the culinary delights of this country. Because Singapore is a melting pot of cultures, religions and ethnic backgrounds, almost every single food, drink and even restaurant style can be found here! Yes, this includes Rösti or cheese fondue. You have good old street food, hawker centers with competing michelin or non michelin 10sqm food stalls, restaurants in malls, food court chain (yes, chains of food courts with 20 stalls in them), normal restaurants, high end lavish dining venues.

The marina bay sands (Yes, it comes from las vegas sands, which owns the casino), is an unbelievable edifice, built in 4 years after the decision to built it (unfathomable anywhere in the western world), has 2’500 rooms, the longest infinity pool, is the most instagrammed hotel on earth and is set to add another tower in 2026.

  • Meeting family in Singapore

    May 11, 2022 in Singapore ⋅ ⛅ 28 °C

I was finally able to catch up with my relatives and long lost friends!

In Singapore I have discovered what another world traveller once warned me about, sticking around too long. Needing a break, mentally and physically, after travelling for a few weeks is natural, but staying statically at one very comfortable place (which sg surely is) can make it a cozy home from
home, where you stay for much too long.

Therefore I went ahead and booked a Gadventures tour in central America for June with a friend 😎

  • Culture: Singapore Food

    May 14, 2022 in Malaysia ⋅ ⛅ 32 °C

If I had to direct an alien visiting this planet to a single city where she/it/he can taste the worlds food, it would be Singapore. A cultural melting pot combined with very high number of expats from all around the world and being an international shipping port all contribute to a fantastic food selection.

The venue range from hawker centers (4-10$), food court (6-12$), luxury food court (7-20$), restaurant stalls (12-35$) to restaurants (15-40$) and high end (30$-unlimited) (in SG$).

If you want see how the locals, students and retirees fill their tummies, head to a hawker center! They might even talk to you in Chinese (or Hokkien, as some early immigrants were from Fujian).

  • Bali: Learning surfing

    May 22, 2022 in Indonesia ⋅ ⛅ 30 °C

The time before heading to America had to be bridged with some actually real time in the water. Bali was the obvious choice after seeing the prices in Hawaii and the political turmoils in the Phillipines.

The thing is you really dont take your phone to the beach to surf. So not a single picture of me with a surf board exists but I could easily proof to you I have been on the board every day with the bruised legs, knees, blue ribcage and squashed elbow (never fall into the water arms first).

The Indonesian have made there way up high up on the list of most friendly and forthcoming people by the way, people I met here seem to celebrate each day as a gift.

  • Bali: Diving license

    May 30, 2022 in Indonesia ⋅ ⛅ 28 °C

After learning to surf only at 31 it was also high time to learn diving. And I have to admit, the experience of weightlessly floating in another mysterious world, one that is much vaster than the one we wander, one that is silent and loud at the same time, pristine and crumbling, dark and yet so colorful, has left a deep awe in me. More so than surfing.

My diving friend michael (Irish) and Carla (German) shared these fantastic moments with me and the exstacy we felt when a giant manta ray or turtle passed us in full majestic presentation swimming effortlesly past us. We just all couldn’t stop smiling for the rest of the day after those dives.

We had a great guide (Emi). He made so many jokes and gigles constantly, which he continues to do under water by gestures, which calmed me down. His previous job was searching for corpses in Jakarta on river beds and he once almost perished to the sea when he dived after his gopro down to 60m, lost proper brain function, made it to 30m, was pulled out by his colleagues and resurfaced (NO2 decompression sickness), where half his body was temporarily paralysed.

Hello dear research community! Just checking in. I was observing Tino from above snorkeling with my horse snorkel kit and made some life extending conclusions:
    i) Diving is a safe sport when the safety rules are regarded
ii) Always dive with a partner, never alone, as she/he can help you and give you oxygen in case of an emergency
iii) Dive your plan and don’t divert from it
    iv) Never stop breathing
    v) Use the air volume in your lungs to control bouyancy and not the bcd (bouyancy control device aka inflatable jacket)
vi) Keep close and check with your partner regularly
