    On our way

    November 4, 2021 in the United States ⋅ ☁️ 52 °F

Had to wake up at 3:30am to get ready to be out the door by 4:15. Our flight is at 7am, but with bags and checking in we needed to arrive early.

After security, we had breakfast and a Bloody Mary. Now we are on the plane, awaiting takeoff!

  • JFK

    November 4, 2021 in the United States ⋅ ⛅ 46 °F

Just spent 4 hours at JFK with Chloe and Kristen. We ran into Chloe at PDX and she was on our flight. She's headed to Madrid.

The flight from Portland was fine. I watched the Anthony Bourdain biopic, "Roadrunner, " and "The Big Sick." We are boarding soon. Next stop Milano!Read more

    November 5, 2021 in Italy ⋅ 🌙 39 °F

The flight was relatively empty. I had the two seats on the outside row to myself. After my dinner of chicken marsala, with cucumber salad, I finished watching "Stillwater, " then curled up and tried to sleep. I may have dozed off a little bit.

We landed early and getting through the health screening, immigration, and customs was fast. I realized that I forgot to set up my AT&T plan, and now I don't have text or phone. This will take a while to figure out.

    On to Milan!

Our Airbnb is a strange, but perfect place. It is close to the center of everything. The building is from the 1700s and it is a maze to get to our apartment. The apartment is small. The main room is a sofa, sleeper bed, and kitchenette. Upstairs ...up a winding staircase, is a small bedroom. There is a bathroom on both floors. Kristen took the downstairs, I've got the bedroom.

The crazy thing is the route to the apartment. I really need to video the trip. Until then, some pictures.

  • Milan day 2

    November 6, 2021 in Italy ⋅ ⛅ 52 °F

I slept until almost noon, which felt good. Kristen had been up for a while and we went to the coffee shop by La Scala. It was perfect, and close. After that we wandered around trying to find food for a picnic. We went to a fancy food court in a department store near the Vittorio Emanuele mall, where we bought salami and cheese. We were looking for bread and wine, and finally found wine (prosecco) at a pokè shop close to the park.

The park was big and had ponds, playgrounds, even a merry-go-round. We sat in the sun on our lifted airplane blanket. It was perfect. After eating, we checked out the Christmas village they were putting up, then stopped for a spritz...

  • Exploring Milan

    November 7, 2021 in Italy ⋅ ⛅ 55 °F

We have been exploring for the last 2-1/2 days. Milan is much different than Florence and Rome. There is a ton of cultural stuff, but it isn't as touristy. On Friday we spent most of the day walking around, trying to stay awake. A stop at the Starbucks helped. I finally got my phone situation fixed on their wifi. We walked to the Piazza alla Duomo and had spritzes, then walked around the Sforza Castle.

By 4ish, I was fading fast. We went back to the Airbnb and looked for dinner places. Nothing opened until after 7:30. At 5:30, I decided to lay down for an hour. By 7pm, I was ready to go.

We walked to a fancy restaurant close to our place, DeRos. We had some sort of fish tartare, gnocchi, and risotto a milanese. Dessert was tiramisu and some some of cream puff.

  • Verona pt 1

    November 8, 2021 in Italy ⋅ ☁️ 50 °F

We got up and out early this morning to go to Verona. We took a cab to Milano Centrale station and took the 8:45 Freccia which took a like over an hour.

When we arrived, it was raining, but not too hard. The walk into the center took about 20 minutes. We broke it up by stopping for coffee and pastries.

Verona is more like the Italian cities I'm used to seeing. A little dull on the outskirts and great old center. We realized that most of the museums and attractions are closed on Mondays, so we just wandered around. We went by the Roman arena (closed) and Juliet's Tomb (closed), Somewhere in between, we walked around the old city wall.

By then we were both getting hungry and started looking for food...
