  • Glasgow

    April 30 in Scotland ⋅ ☁️ 64 °F

Today we arrived in Glasgow (minus Karen’s luggage which eventually made it). It was an uncharacteristically warm and sunny day here, and the streets were packed. Fellow hiker Lindsay from Canada joined us for dinner. We take the train up to the highlands tomorrow.Read more

  • Heading to the Highlands

    May 1 in Scotland ⋅ ☁️ 48 °F

Today we took the train from Glasgow to Bridge of Orchy. Gorgeous views of the Highlands, and much of the train trip follows the West Highland Way. Enjoyed our first cider of the trip. Ready to start hiking tomorrow!Read more

What a fabulous first day it was for our group! It was such a beautiful day to walk with old friends and meet some new ones along the trail!Read more

  • West Highland Way Day 2

    May 3 in Scotland ⋅ ☁️ 43 °F

Today was an incredible, and incredibly challenging walk of 15.5 miles from Kinlochleven to the end of the WHW in Fort William! For Sara, Karen and Cathy, it was our official completion of the entire WHW we started and almost finished 18 months ago. Huge kudos to Judy and Lisa for their grit, stamina, and overall excellence on the trail! What a day. 🥰 Tomorrow we head out for 10 miles on Day 1 of the Great Glen Way!Read more

  • Great Glen Way, Day 1

    May 4 in Scotland ⋅ ☁️ 43 °F

After yesterday's extremely challenging 15+ mile hike, today's completely flat 10 1/2 walk along the Caledonian Canal was a welcome change! The landscape along the water was magical and the weather was perfect, complete with sailboats, flowering trees, lambs, and friendly dogs. Staying tonight at the Whispering Pines Lodge, on the shores of Loch Lochy!Read more

  • Gairlochy to Loch Loggan

    May 5 in Scotland ⋅ ⛅ 43 °F

Wrapped up 12.4 miles and Day 2 of the Great Glen Way. Scenery was utterly breathtaking, but our feet are definitely feeling the 51 miles we've done the past 4 days!

  • Needed rest day

    May 6 in Scotland ⋅ ☁️ 50 °F

We are at the Glengarry Castle Hotel for 2 nights, and today was a wonderful day of rest. We had a driver give us a tour of the local area, going to Eilean Donan Castle and ending at Kyle of Locash (across from Isle of Skye). Afternoon tea and some wine and cheese has us ready to walk again tomorrow! Sara and Cathy spotted their first cat, which of course dashed away as soon as they went to say hello.Read more

  • Great Glen Way, Day 3

    May 7 in Scotland ⋅ ☁️ 46 °F

Today we walked about 10.1 miles through a forest then along the Caledonian Canal from Inverarry to the charming town of Fort Augustus. We were lucky, again (!), to have a spectacular and sunny day! In Fort Augustus, we satisfied our craving for chips with curry sauce, did some souvenir shopping, then landed at the Inch Hotel for the night. We have now completed a total of about 61 miles and 5 out of our 9 hiking days!Read more

  • Great Glen Way, Day 4: Above Loch Ness

    May 8 in Scotland ⋅ ⛅ 52 °F

Today's mileage of 7.3 was really challenging! Several miles of uphill through a fairytale forest opened into a long stretch of undulating, open landscape high above Loch Ness. We stopped a couple times for snacks and to chat with fellow hikers, then descended a scary, knee punishing few miles into Invermoriston and through the doors of the wonderful Glenmoriston Arms Hotel. Dinner was delicious and we are hitting the sack early to rest up for a 14 mile day tomorrow!Read more

  • Who knew Scotland had so much elevation?

    May 9 in Scotland ⋅ 🌙 55 °F

Holy cow! Just when we think the next day can’t be any harder… it is! Today was 1200 feet of elevation and sections that felt straight up! 14 miles to our destination of Drumnadrochit. This day was a hard one, but a visit to the local pharmacy for additional knee brace support has us ready (hopefully) for 9 miles tomorrow.Read more

    May 10 in Scotland ⋅ ☀️ 54 °F

We are now at a total of 90.5 miles walked, with about 11 to go tomorrow! Weather today continued to be spectacular. We were delighted to meet a young man, Alex, who is walking the entire UK south to north to raise funds for MS, which his father has. Our feet and knees are ready to be done, but spirits are high and it will definitely be bittersweet to finish this adventure!Read more

  • 102 miles. We did it!

    May 11 in Scotland ⋅ ⛅ 55 °F

Today was a comparatively easy 11 mile day of walking, taking just over 4 hours to complete.
