    Maria Island is literally teeming with a variety of rare and unusual birds and animals. You will see, without a doubt, many wombats, pademelons, and wallabies. You will also see Cape Barren geese, parrots, and a variety of other birds, including the endangered forty-spotted pardalote and swift parrot.

    As part of a rehabilitation program, 15 Tasmanian Devils were introduced to the island as an insurance population in 2012. Elsewhere in Tasmania, they are near extinction because of Devil Facial Tumour Disease.

    Despite having Australia's healthiest surviving population of Tasmanian devils, your chances of seeing them are minimal unless you camp overnight—they are strictly nocturnal.
