Tanswell's Commercial Hotel - Beechworth

Lunch today at Tanswell's Commercial Hotel.
This grand old country pub in Beechworth was well worth the visit.

Thomas Tanswell was the son of a convict but rose to become a successful businessman and Justice of the Peace in Beechworth.

Tanswell purchased the Commercial Hotel in April 1870 and renamed it Tanswell’s Commercial Hotel.
In 1873, he rebuilt and transformed the former humble timber pub into the grand, double-storey brick hotel.
The Tanswell family sold the hotel in 1967 after almost a century of ownership, but the name remained.

Tanswell's Commercial Hotel was heritage-listed on 9 October 1974 in the Victorian Heritage Register.Read more
