    South Shetland Islands

    November 16, 2019 in Antarctica ⋅ ☁️ 0 °C

I wake up this morning to find minimal movement in the cabin, and although I can tell we’re not at anchor yet, it’s clear that we must have arrived somewhere a bit more sheltered. Throwing back the curtains, I’m met with an awesome sight: my first view of Antarctica. We’re presently sailing among the South Shetland Isles; a small chain of islands which lie about 80 miles off the mainland of the Antarctic Peninsula. Blue skies are out again, and make for a dramatic contrast with the ice-covered monoliths jutting out of the frigid waters. I quickly throw some clothes on an head up on deck to take a few photos. Now, I know it’s Antarctica, and I know Antarctica is bloody cold, but bugger me - I’m missing a good few layers in my haste. The wind chill makes my 30-second photo excursion feel like an hour, and my gloveless hands are frozen to the bone. The warm gear that I moaned so much about at Cape Horn will be definitely more welcome here! I grab a coffee to warm up and head back to my cabin, where through the window I can already see the weather is beginning to turn. I guess we dress for all eventualities down here. We’re sailing past big chunks of ice now - not quite icebergs yet, but I’m guessing that’s a sign of things to come. This is a desolately beautiful place.Read more
