    Australia Zoo

Our last day was spent experiencing the ultimate Aussie adventure visiting Australian Zoo, near Beerwah, Sunshine Coast. The zoo occupies a total of 280 hectares. It was opened in 1970 by Bob and Lyn Irwin, parents to the Aussie icon Steve Irwin. It was then developed by Steve and his wife Terrie , with funds from their wildlife films and merchandise. Today visitors will see a wide variety of birds, mammals and reptiles as well as viewing the ever popular crocodiles. The spectacular expansive gardens provide a sanctuary for Australian and World wildlife. Also incorporated in the organisation is the Wildlife Warriors program which rescues and cares for injured wildlife outside the zoo. The visitor can experience conversation through exciting education displays. The zoo is directly involved in wildlife conservation for endangered species world wide.

    Hervey Bay

Hervey Bay is home to some of the world's best whale watching encounters in a region recently accredited as a Whale Heritage Site. It is also the stepping off point to World Heritage listed Fraser Island, has some safe swimming beaches along the 16km Esplanade, sheltered and calm, protected by Fraser Island. There is an air of a laid back lifestyle with beautiful parklands, playgrounds, jettys, picnic areas, barbecues, cafes and a bicycle track running alongside the waterfront. It is an area certainly geared to meet the traveller as well as locals, offering a wide variety of dining and accommodation options.

    The Criterion - Rockhampton.

The Bush Inn was Rockhampton's first hotel, built in 1858 on the site now occupied by the Criterion Hotel. This occured soon after the declaration of the settlement Rockhampton. In 1862 the Bush Inn was enlarged and renamed the Criterion. The interior of the building is preserved in the style in which it was originally built. It also hosts it's own house ghost, believed to be a chambermaid who, it is claimed, committed suicide in room 22 following a broken heart. Guests have indeed reported a " presence " when staying it that particular room.

    Rockhampton Heritage Buildings

From frontier town to a bustling river port and gold rush city, Rockhampton's colonial past and fortunes are preserved in sandstone and wrought iron. In September 1858 gold was discovered approximately 50ks north of Rockhampton. The town grew rapidly in its early years with increasing prosperity built mainly around the pastoral, cattle and gold mining industries. Thankfully we have these beautiful buildings as a legacy of Rockhampton's early years of prosperity.

    Rockhampton

Rockhampton, affectionately known as Rocky or Rockvagus ! is one of the oldest cities in Queensland and is nestled on the Tropic of Capricorn. Situated 600ks north of Brisbane, on the mighty Fitzroy River with a population of 80,000. The name Rockhampton was derived from a combination of two sources-" Rock" from the rock barrier which then blocked river navigation and Hampton, "a small village". It is bursting with history, a vibrant Riverbank Precinct, arts and entertainment scene. Differing dining options, streets lined with green lush trees and gardens, all under the picturesque backdrop of Mount Archer. The city has heritage listed Botanical Gardens, is the birth place of tennis great, Rod Laver, is Australia's beef capital and in 1986 is where Angela spent a year working at the Rockhampton Public Hospital-now totally rebuilt with basically nothing left from Angela's time there.

    Rockhampton's Botanical Gardens.

Rockhampton Botanic Gardens is one of the oldest and most established public gardens in Queensland and has been heritage listed. It was built from 1873 to 1930s, the kiosk was erected in 1911 and was added to the Queensland Heritage Register 1999. Today, the gardens retain their historical significance with a number of iconic plantings, including the 150 year-old canopy of Banyan figs and an avenue of Bunya pines. The gardens are a popular recreational feature for the people of the district as well to be enjoyed by tourists. It even has the "Leaning Tree of Rocky "with a tiny Angela attempting to hold it up !!

    Rockhampton -Where's the Beef ??

Having some fun with Rocky' beef industry icons. Bull statues are scattered around the city gardens so it's a bit of hide and seek as you drive around the city. Breeds represented include The Brahman, The Romagnola, The Bradford, The Droughtmaster, and Angela's favourite breed, Santa Gertrudis, finally a statue called Under the Hammer, a bull statue made from hammering metal to shape the beast. Little Mawson enjoyed meeting all the bully boys !

    Yeppoon

Yeppoon is a popular costal town renowned for its beaches, tropical climate and view to the islands of Kepple Bay. The Jewel in the crown of the Yeppoon foreshore precinct is the 2500 square meter lagoon pool which is located right on the beach front with a swim up infinity edge with stunning views over the Kepple Islands. We sat , enjoying the BEST ever fish and chips and drenched in sunshine and stunning foreshore views. Angela remembers visiting Yeppoon, then a sleepy little beach side town, on days off when working at the Rockhampton Public Hospital in 1986. Today that little sleepy little town has been completely engulfed by the tourist vibe and the development it brings.

    Emu Park

Emu Park is a costal town on the Capricorn Coast located 20ks south of Yeppoon. It is a popular tourist spot where families can enjoy beautiful outdoor spaces overlooking the islands of Kepple Bay including Great Kepple Island. Also home of the famous Singing Ship Monument and the exquisite foreshore art piece depecting a copy of the original piece of art "The Spirit of Gallipoli Landing 1915 ". The extract of the original work has been placed on a glass outdoor presentation overlooking Kepple Bay. The artwork has been presented so that the viewer can align the artwork's horizon with Kepple Bay's horizon , and by simulating warships , gives the viewer the impression of what the landing may have been like.

Mount Archer National Park protects areas of the Berserker Ranges, a scenic backdrop to the city of Rockhampton. At 604m above sea level Mount Archer provides spectacular views of the city, Fitzroy River and the surrounding ranges. It is a must see when visiting Rocky complete with its elevated treetop boardwalk, extending 25meters off the side of Mount Archer, or enjoying picnic areas in the amphitheatre, the kids adventure playground and if feeling super energic enjoying one of walks or longer hiking trails.

    Mackay to Rockhampton

Unfortunately we arrived late pm into Mackay and therefore only had time to drive through the city centre, leaving the following morning for a trip down the Bruce Highway to Rockhampton. The Southern Great Barrier Reef lies East to the highway which unfortunately is far too inland for water glimpses. The town of Sarina, which does hug the coast line was our final glimpses of the water for the day. The area is a sugar cane centre as well as being a large cattle grazing area. Whilst viewing some picturesque scenery roadside picture stops were a challenge, therefore limiting picture opportunities.

    Tierawoomba Station

Today was a nostalgic trip for Duncan. When he was a fighting fit young man he left Melbourne to begin life on the land as a Jackaroo at Tierawoomba Station. The then owner Brian Hughes was in the army with Wal Grant, Duncan's dad. Duncan not too sure how the job came about but obviously with a connection through these two. He arrived as a young eager nineteen year old, keen to fit in. He holds fond memories of cattle, horses, over indulging in alcohol with fellow stockman near Funnel Creek and in Sarina , where he assured his workmates he would run the horses in next morning and then passed out ,subsequently bundled into a Ute for the trip home !!!
. He can also recalled the challenge between man and beast as he attempted to ride a bull at the Nebo rodeo.
Today Tierawoomba Station is close to a billion dollar enterprise which is still held in the Hughes name, decendants of Sir Brian Hughes who was subequently knighted .
Pics: Nebo Heritage listed ( 1862 ) hotel, Funnel Creek, Signage to main homestead entrance, Duncan standing on entrance road, crop of sorghum and unusual landform we passed on route.

    Charters Towers

We had approximately one and half hours to do a grocery shop and check out the main township of Charters Towers. Approximately 130 kms inland from Townsville, with a population of just over 8.000 the town is historically important gold mining town and built on the huge profits of gold mining. Today Charters Towers is beautifully preserved with the best of the buildings concentrated in the town center. My favourite was the Stock Exchange Arcade, complete with a glass roof, stained glass windows and a magnificent tiled floor.

    Charters Towers- The Caravan Park.

Well not much to say as we spent 3 nights 2 full days with a van and no car -I'm sure Slim Dusty ( if he was still alive ) could change the words of a pub with no beer to a van with no car !!! We broke the car's engine drive belt 160ks inland between Richmond and Charters Towers-fortunately recognising a problem quickly and not causing engine over heating consequences. We have NRMA premium membership, so loaded car on back of a tow truck and hooked on the caravan, we hopped in the tow truck too, into to Charters Towers. The driver took our van to the caravan park and backed it perfectly into the site before dropping off car at a mechanics- our membership covering it all. We had to wait till new belt was delivered from Townsville - therefore we saw heaps of the caravan park and not much else. Car good to go at 3 .30 pm so we did a shop and a lightening trip around town .

Julia Creek is a small outback Queensland town with a population of approximately 500. It is a service center for the surrounding wool, sheep and cattle properties and today is increasingly a stopping point for travellers between Townsville and Mount Isa.
The Julia Creek Dunnart, a small nocturnal mouse-sized marsupial, is listed as critically endangered. Yes ! Julia Creek does have an actual creek, ( In pic) and a Julia Street which has a dog park , kind of funny as our Julia loves her doggies 😁

    Mataranka

Mataranka is a town located 420 km south of Darwin and is famous for its peaceful thermal pools set amid a lush palm forest. The thermal pools soothe the soul with temperatures at a constant 30 degrees C .
The story ,"We of the Never Never" is famous for depicting the harsh outback environment verses land settlement for farming. The book penned by Jannie Gunn, published in 1908, is a well known Australian story of life at Elsey Station near Mataranka. The book ,Little Black Princess, also written by the same author, is the story of Bett Bett, based on the story of a small Aboriginal girl, ( named changed ) who took refuge with Mrs Jannie Gunn at Elsey Station.
The Mataranka Park has some wonderful statue pieces recognising local history pieces including Bett Bett (of The Little Black Princess story ) and her dog called Sue and a tribute piece to local Aboriginal stockman and other pieces.
    Pictures :
Thermal Springs at The Homestead-where we stayed. Bitter Springs, thermal pools.
Ange relaxing in the thermal springs.
We of the Never Never, replica of the homestead.
Tribute statue to the Aboriginal stockman.
Tribute statue of Bett Bett and her dog Sue ( we thought had a striking resemblance to June, Alisha's dog ).

George Brown Darwin Botanic Gardens Pt 1

The George Brown Darwin Botanic Gardens have played an integral role in the urban development of Darwin, dating back to 1870. Only a few remnants of original gardens remain today, having survived a torrid history of cyclones and bombing. After the bombing of Darwin the gardens were in shambles. Jack Agostini who had started as a labourer at the Gardens in 1937, was given the task to restore them. He laid the foundations for the beautiful place it is today.
In 1974 Cyclone Tracy destroyed over 75% of the gardens plants and trees, so once again a massive restoration needed to be done. Thank heavens this restoration took place to give us such a peaceful , green and shady place to enjoy.

    Fish & Chip Sunset Cruise

Enjoying a warm tropical evening cruise leaving from Stokes Hill Wharf in Darwin. What a fabulous sunset to be enjoyed whilst dining on a meal of fish and chips with a cool drink. A relaxing, enjoyable, colourful Top End sunset over Fannie Bay. We left the wharf for some fun on the water, a few boat donuts and then riding the wake bumps left from our circulating donuts. We then pulled into the shore where our two crew girls went to a fish and chip shop to collected our dinners . Attached a pic of the girls walking up the beach with our " Uber Eats " !!

    Kakadu - part 2

In the afternoon we took the Indigenous owned Yellow Water Billabong boat cruise. It is Kakadu's largest and most famous wetland consisting of river channels, floodplains and swamps. The tranquil cruise took us on a discovery tour through the wetlands, with abundant bird life, plant life and the slow quiet crocodiles, sometimes simply sunning themselves on the banks or gliding past the boat.
