“Meat Ant Country”,the giant meat ant is over a million times the size of an actual ant. The notorious bush ranger brothers Patrick & James Kenniff were a part of Qlds largest manhunt over 30 yrs. The town built up gradually what was a KUNJA tribal territory , came into being a resting place for bullock teams. Lying at the convergence of 3 bullock tracks from Moven, Tambo & Charleville. Originally called Burenda it was re named Ellangowan( still the name of the watering hole). In 1833 it was call is apparently Indigenous Australian word meaning “camp on a waterhole”.Augathella is the destination of cattle drovers in a Aussie folk song called “ Augathella Station”. Population of this town is 449 & is situated on the Warrego river ( Aboriginal word meaning.... river of sand. The giant meat ant was installed in 2011 costing $250 to try & attract visitors to this dying town Pics taken by our friend Denise while walking her did Obi.Read more

    Day 21

    July 24, 2019 in Australia ⋅ ☀️ 21 °C

Up early this morning packed up by 7:30 and up to the top to fill up with water and empty the loo, round to the recycling bins and then we are off heading west to Blackall, good road pretty much dual width bitumen all the way with plenty of bumps. Stopped in Blackall to get bread and have a walk around, good shopping with all the things you would need, big free camp by the river super busy.
Went out the road a bit and pulled up for morning tea, then kept on tracking to Tambo and then we stopped at a station entrance for lunch before pulling up for the day at Augathella around 1:30.
Place is a lot tidier than a few years ago had a wander around good supermarket and butcher, big camp $5 donation no water in the river.
Had the usual drink at the local watering hole, back at camp having a few more and listening to a some tunes, enjoying the warm weather while it lasts as we make our way south, chicken parmigiana for tea, lots in the camp now ⛺️

    May 25 in Australia ⋅ ☀️ 23 °C

Had a good days travel. Stopped in Roma for some earphones for Mal as he had left his at home.
Then we stopped for lunch at Ooline Park. Apparently one of the oldest rainforest trees in Qld. We never thought we would see one out this way! Heaps of birds there - sitellas, silvereyes, double bars, honeyeaters, plus lots more.
Went for a walk along the empty creek in Augathella and found about 40 Apostlebirds.
    Having a campfire tonight.

    The Big Ant - Augathella

    July 3, 1991 in Australia ⋅ ⛅ 21 °C

Continuing South on Landsborough highway and a bit over an hour south of Tambo I arrived to Augathella, no much to see in town other than the "Big Meat Ant" sculpture located in a park dedicated to this type of ants. The park is not on the highway but in town, not difficult to find though, just head to the covenience store and the park is just across the road.

Time of visit : December 2013
