      Cape Gloucester (88 days🌡️)

      May 10, 2023 in Australia ⋅ 🌬 24 °C

After settling down in Tasmania and starting to call it a home, moving to the next place wasn't an easy challenge. Dumpy, and interesting man with a big cowboy hat, picked me up from the airport, took me to get some snacks and basics and drove me to what would be my new home. He was quiet, and when he spoke it was hard to understand him, he had a big cooler full of beers that he would pop up every 5 minutes (during an hour drive), and he was driving in the crazy dirt road towards Cape Gloucester clearly above speed limit. This doesn't look like the Australia I've seen before with all its rules and correct people - I thought to myself - this is gonna be interesting. Just from the arrival got a small tour and introduction to the facilities and left in my new home (a small basic container), where I realised that the snacks I got and sunscream that I got for myself weren't clearly gonna be enough for me to survive in here. On my first week got to meet must of the crew, everyone as nice, welcoming and kind as they could be; Matt who kinda played the role as bar manager, the two french couples living with me, Juliette, Matis, Lea and Max; Gemma who lived in her van, the two english girls Georgia and Liv, Jay the substitute chef, scary Josh, Scottie the manager, Carol from reception, and some of the cute juniors that worked with us. It was a few weeks of adjusting, to a new home that I slowly refurnished and made it look a bit less like a prison cell, understanding the people and the bar, and understanding that this was a different type of place to what I was used to. The levels of the cocktails got me a bit tense at the beginning, and I was feeling sad and frustrated that I had to refuse such an amazing offer for this, where no one seemed to care about what I knew and how I did things. I guess my ambition was fighting against the beauty of the place. But with time I started to get to know everyone, to appreciate the freedom and chill from the bar and enjoy the beauty of this paradisiac beach I was living in. Went on a couple of escapes to Airlie Beach to get some fresh air, had some amazing food from all the specials than Jay the chef experimented with, put some specials cocktails on the bar, had a few beers with the guys, started doing yoga every morning before work and enjoyed some stunning sunset runs every day off I had. To be honest, I still need some time to love and call this place a home, but its not the worst place to be trapped in for a few months, that's for sure.Read more
