      Parachilna

      August 27, 2019 in Australia ⋅ ⛅ 18 °C

Parachilna is reinventing itself as a place of fossils. Once it was a station on the Ghan railway line on the way to Oodnadatta. More recently the lu e running past carried coal from Leigh Creek enroute to Port Pirie. The mine closed two years ago so the 10 minute earthquake like rumble is no more.

That line to Leigh Creek is no longer used and unless the mine reopens nature will take it away over time.

      Mungeranie RH - Parachilna

      July 20, 2023 in Australia ⋅ ⛅ 16 °C

Not a bad night's sleep on air mattresses. Arise to a camp cooked bacon and eggs by Brett, whilst Jen attended to the toast and cuppas. We then set about striking camp and packing the truck before our showers and farewells to fellow travellers/drinking buddies. It was now 11 am.

Bretts turn to drive the track. It was noticeably rougher than yesterday, but it was still good. We went through Mulka, the driest area in Australia, at an average of 18mm rainfall per year, through to Etadunna where we spotted a feral Ostrich...yes, an Ostrich. Then, on to Dulkaninna, Cooper Creek a few times, Clayton and on to Marree, the end of the Birdsville Track. Here, Jen did a Google search (reception), because we couldn't totally accept it was an Ostrich, but lo and behold, they used to farm Ostriches out here and there were some escapees recorded and believed to be in the wild in the outback here. There you go. So, officially, it was the only land-based wild creature seen during our entire trip down the track.

Took a quick look around Marree, home to at nice looking outback Hotel, a train station and the Lake Eyre Yacht Club (no rowing club), and not much else. We headed south along The Outback Way and stopped in at a little place called Farina. It is a derelict, decaying village that had an underground baking oven and a number of fallen down sandstone buildings. Now, with the assistance of funding and donations and a plethora of volunteers, the oven is operational, there is a visitor/souvenir/coffee shop-bakery centre that operates for just 8 weeks per year whilst these volunteers stabilise the old derelict buildings for preservation and tourism purposes. After a delicious pie and walnut cake with cream and jam, we then moved on through Lyndhurst, Copley, and Leigh Creek, which are just west of the North Flinders-Gammon Ranges on to Parachilna, where we decided to 'glamp' it at the very nice Prairie Hotel and it's micro Brewery, the Prairie Hotel Brewery. Beers were great, lodgings super-luxurious. We're just near the Flinders Ranges NP, and that's where we're heading to tomorrow, aiming for Adelaide and catching up with our good mate Darryl.

      Prairie Hotel Parachilna

      March 10, 2022 in Australia ⋅ ☀️ 29 °C

Last stop on our Flinders Adventure was the iconic Prairie Hotel Parachilna.

Brett and the kids have been talking about coming here since we left on our trip around Australia, as Brett and Shaun are always playing a song by John Williamson about this very hotel.

We were very lucky, as it only reopened last week after being closed for the summer.

We splurged and got the Feral Feast Banquet, which the Hotel is famous. It hosts a variety of local berries and plants plus, camel, kangaroo and emu 😳. We were willing to give everything a try that came out. I was devastated when one of the selections for today was the emu liver pate🤢. Given that we were here to try new things and that the kids had already given it a go, I thought I better give it a try! I think I nearly drank my whole glass of wine trying desperately to get the horrid flavour out of my mouth.

The Buffelo cheese was to die for and the kangaroo on the mixed Feral Grill was amazing, it was so tender.

Everyone tried everything, the kids liked all the meats, camel was the least favourite. It was a sausage, but was also a stronger flavour. The Davidson plum tart was voted the favourite dessert tart, when you bit into it the middle custard exploded into your mouth🤤.

It was a great experience, and of course we had to listen to the Hotel Parachilna song on the way to camp that night.

      Long distance lunch

      November 12, 2023 in Australia ⋅ ☀️ 35 °C

A mammoth day today distance wise. Today we set off for lunch at the Prairie Hotel in Parachilna at the northern end of the Flinders Rangers. First stop was Blinman the highest town in SA and then a drive along a dirt road and through Parachilna Gorge to reach our destination. The menu was a Feral Menu consisting mainly of goat, emu, kangaroo, camel and other such stuff. All accompanied with native flavoring. Frank had the Feral Grill - Camel Boerwors, Kangaroo Fillet, Emu Rissole and Goat Cutlet. 😳. Me I had the grilled halloumi with native dukkah and grilled quandongs. A quick wander through the town and old railway station shows this used to be on the old Ghan Rail Route.

Then it was back home via Glass Gorge.
