      Brisbane🏙 -> Gold Coast 🏖

      January 25, 2024 in Australia ⋅ ☀️ 31 °C

After going for a run along the Brisbane river 🏃🏼‍♀️and packing my backpack once again 🎒, I had breakfast with the girls and did some organizational stuff 📑.
Got on the 🚅 at around noon to make my way down to the Gold Coast 😎, where I'll be flying out from tomorrow morning.
The journey took longer than expected (once again 🙄), due to massive traffic jam at Gold coast (had to change to a 🚌 here).
However, once here I quickly did the check in at the YHA and then went for a long and very nice and relaxing beach walk 🥰
It's actually the first time since I've started my travels that I'm at the ocean 😮 and the first time ever, that the sand made this funny noise when walking on it haha (see video 😅)
Got some food in the nearby village of Coolangatta and then went back to the hostel during sunset and admired the fullmoon, as I still had to find & book a rental car for my time in Tasmania 😆
So not a very extraordinary day...but still a nice one 😊

An Evening with Family & Friends

      January 17 in Australia ⋅ ☁️ 25 °C

We were up early this morning to finalise the packing and to spend a bit of time with our friends Peter & Lorrie who are staying in our house while we are away. Much better weather with sunshine and cooler temps. We targeted an 0930 departure and just prior to that we were blessed by a number of our neighbours coming to see us to wish us Bon Voyage; or perhaps they just wanted to make sure we were really going to leave and they would have more peace and quiet!!! 🤣
After a few obligatory photos we pulled out in the Merlot and caravan and began the drive to the Gold Coast. We had not gone more than 200m before Anna and Patten were seen standing next to the road taking a video of our departure!! It’s so nice to have so many great neighbours who have turned into our very good friends.
Our destination today is the house of our eldest son David and his family on the Gold Coast. The drive was going very well until we got to Logan on the Pacific Highway and from there to Nerang we got stuck in very heavy traffic that added 45 minutes to our journey! All the way we thanked the powers that be that we live on the Sunshine Coast without such major traffic jams!
It was really good to see David, Katrina, and the two grandkids Josh and Nathan. We spent a very nice afternoon chatting to them and catching up on the news. Then our friends John and Jan arrived and the next 4 hours were filled with good fun, good company, and a lovely salmon meal kindly cooked to perfection by David and Katrina. Thus included an impromptu rendition of the Haka by Josh and Nathan. Thanks very much to David & Katrina for a very enjoyable evening!
Our car and caravan were parked in the street near David’s house, so a quick check that everything was locked and the alarms set, and then off to bed. A good start to our holiday!

Noosa - Ballina via Varsity Lakes

      April 17, 2023 in Australia ⋅ ⛅ 20 °C

What is that noise? What is the time? 3am!! Whaaaat!! An alarm clock at 3am!! Deja Vu, is it time to get up to crew a flight? OK, it’s time to get up so we can see the grandkids on the Gold Coast at 6:30am. So up we get, a quick coffee, and out to hitch up the van, and sure enough we are underway in the dark heading for Varsity Lakes just before 4am.
The look on Nathan’s face when he saw us at the front door at 6:30am was worth the early start! He was so happy, and especially when we gave him his birthday present!!
We spent about 1.5 hours with the kids and Katrina and David before they went off to school. We then had a nice breakfast at the Blackboard cafe before we hit the road again heading for Ballina and Alstonville to see our friends Kim & Carol.
We set up camp in a nice spot at the Alstonville Showgrounds and then spent the rest of the afternoon and evening with Kim & Carol. A very pleasant time, except for the weather which was blowing a gale outside!!!
After such an early start it was nice to finally snuggle up in the caravan for a good nights sleep….
