    March 16 in Austria

Ági and Márton, Balazs's parents, despited having three kids, kindly invited us for a shakshuka brunch in their new flat. Balazs (almost as old as Nóra) is Nóra's friend from the kindergarten, and lives across the road from us. He and his brother Milán (a bit younger than Emma) were born in Israel, where their bio-scientist parents were on a few years' contract at the Weitzmann institute. They moved back a few years ago, and still miss (their bubble ) Israel- the avocado, the weather, the spices, the food (and their Weitzmann world life :)). Since their move back to Budapest, they were renovating their flat while living in a tiny one bedroom, where also Blanka, their third baby, was born. Now they have finally moved in, there is lots of space for the kids, the parents, and even some friends to come over. A beautiful flat, a lovely feast and great company on a rainy day. Toda raba!Read more

    Downhill battle

    March 10 in Austria

The once-a-week ski lessons with the Fogarasi ski school since September on a plastic ski slope in Normafa have paid off. Our firstborn can ski, enjoys ski, and wants to ski. Considering hysterical meltdowns from just the sight of snow three years ago, and not less hysterical meltdowns of ski refusal just this autumn, we see it a huge achievement. The ski trip was also organised by the Fogarasi ski school, and the teaching continued on the real alpine slopes too (mixed success for Nóra, with distractions from Luiza, various scary looking pull lifts and just general dissatisfaction wit life on the slopes- nothing that some good old strict parenting cannot fix...). By the end of the trip Nóra was enjoying skiing, went for two days with us on all the slopes we went on, without much of a break, went up on all possible lifts, skied down, laughed, and wanted more. One more parenting battle won. Prost!Read more

    Up the hills

    March 5 in Austria

Our annual family ski trip is on- us four plus Éva-mama. Tito has been left to camp in the garden (leaving him for the first time since he joined our family in October last year), with a help of an automatic cat feeder ( a machine that dispenses cat food twice a day at a pre-set time) and a supervision of Gabi, the cleaning lady. We borrowed Dóri's car (Volvo XC90) so that all five us can fit, packed in up, and off we set. 4.5 hours later (well, and the lunch stop) we were at Kreischberg in Austria. The trip was organised by Nóra's ski school, we stayed at a hotel with breakfast and dinner (lunches on the slopes), 5 min walk from the ski lift. Emma and Nóra in a room with mama, we next door. It snowed on day and night one, giving us plenty of fresh snow to ski on for the whole week. Emma spent a lot of time with mama and only came up to the top once, on the last day, as she was unwell most of the time. Tanya, Edmund and Lea and Maja stayed at the same village, but unfortunately we saw them very little as did not want to pass on the stomach bug we all ended up having. But despite the medical adventures, the holiday was great- lots of outdoors, family time without food shopping and cooking, and great snow and slopes. As Dóri and co planned their ski holiday on the week after ours, mama continued straight there on the last day, and we drove back into the Hungarian (short lived, at start) spring and 16 degrees!Read more
