      George Town ade

      February 23, 2023 on the Bahamas ⋅ ☀️ 26 °C

      Litterbox, Red Shanks, Great Exuma

      March 21 on the Bahamas ⋅ ☀️ 75 °F

Given that there is a major blow heading our way (tropical storm force winds and 20 foot seas in the Atlantic), we took Ralph’s advice and headed on a high tide at 7am into the Litterbox, an anchorage with a very shallow approach just N of Crab Cay. There were only five other vessels there, so we both got good spots. Over the next two days other boats have filtered in, with a rush in the evening before the high winds. Our spare halyards are wrapped about the furled jibs, flags are removed, dinghy is stowed, etc. Now we have dinner and wait to see if we get 30 knots or 60 knots.

The front arrived with little wind, but massive rain. When that passed around 11pm, we could see a huge lightning display nearby to our southeast. While we stayed aboard during this, 4 other boats had decided to go ashore to the nearby Rusty Anchor and have drinks (they were full for dinner). They said it was an excellent choice - “What storm?”

Well, all of us in the Litterbox survived very well, thanks! Now and Zen’s anchor dragged at 2:30am after the wind shifted and rose sharply. I was on watch just in case we had a problem, but we were solidly anchored. But the next morning we discovered via the VHF cruiser net that 5, then 7 and then finally as many as 11 boats were either struck by lightning or had suffered nearby lightning damage. We got very lucky,

With the storm passed, we had a rare chance to move SE under sail, so Ashling and Now and Zen decided to move together,

      George Town, Great Exuma Island

      March 12, 2016 on the Bahamas ⋅ ⛅ 20 °C

We spent almost 2 weeks at Georgetown on Elizabeth Harbour. The George Town "harbour" is nine-nautical-miles long by one-nautical-mile wide and lies between the mainland of Great Exuma Island and barrier islands, Stocking Island to the north and Elizabeth Island to the south. The harbour is really busy since the Reggada is going on. There is a great food market store with pretty much everything you need. Bob had to order a new outboard at Minn's Watersport for our dinghy since we were having problems with the old one. We hung around here until it arrived. There is also a good hardware store called top to bottom. We attended the Bahamian Music and Heritage Festival which was great. I had my first experience hitchiking! Though, here you don't just stick you thumb out, you put out your hand and dribble your hand as if you were dribbling a basketball. Funny but it works! We got picked up really quick. Georgetown is great, very convenient with alot to do. We provisioned our meats (chicken, steaks etc.) at Prime Island meat market, they are awesome! The laundromat is okay, there is a lady that assigns the washers and dryers as customers come in but she's very helpful keeping everyone in line. They even hand write the timings to know when each load is ready. It works! The water here is gorgeous! We had a dolphin swim laps around our boat about 15 times, was so cool!Read more
