Yesterday was arrival day for our friends so we did a lot of bus time and a little walking. After a solid night of sleep, they were ready to go! Went down to Checkpoint Charlie, stopped for the obligatory picture, then walked almost 2 miles to see the topography of terror, an interesting section describing the rise of national socialism (Nazi) and Hitler. Then how they were able to shape the narrative, and spark some actions, which led the general population to believe their actions were warranted.
Not trying to go political but there are many echos of current politics so let’s learn from the past.
Moving forward we went to the site of the 1933 book burning, onto Brandenburg gate, and saw the victory column.
After getting yelled at for trying to take a picture of the US Embassy, we wandered into the tiergarten to see memorials to the Romas (gypsies) and other marginalized races the Nazis tried to eliminate along with the Jews. There was an interesting and disturbing map showing the 40-50 work and death camps, many dedicated to eliminating a specific group.
Off to get curry wurst, Russian memorial, then back on the train for naps at the hotel. Dinner with our friends from Berlin and tucked in for the night.
