  • Day one Berlin

    21 de agosto de 2024, Alemanha ⋅ ⛅ 70 °F

Stuffed ourselves on the hotel breakfast buffet, then headed out for the Berlin Wall memorial. It’s a short 1 mile, which took us about 1.5 miles after meandering through Humboldthain park, visiting the flak/antiaircraft battery and going the wrong way for a bit.
When you actually see what “the wall” started as then became, you wonder what was going on to cause this level of stress. Overnight, about 30 miles of barbed wire and guards were put in place. Most thought it was temporary so no escape needed. After 2-3 months they saw it was here to stay. Each time there was a successful escape, new prevention measures were put in place. While some areas were just a tall “border wall” (sound familiar?), others became multiple walls, separated by a kill zone, sand pits and ditches to catch vehicles, iron spikes to impale jumpers, and other deterrence.
Some buildings were actually on the line, front door to the east, back door the west. They were nailed shut. When people jumped out of windows into nets held by the fire brigade, they were boarded up or blocked in. When they jumped off the roof or slid down a rope, barbed wire fences were put on the roof. When they dug tunnels under the wall, the buildings were torn down.
It wasn’t until the Polish Solidarity movement, the Czech/Slovak Velvet revolution, and similar actions that Reagan’s challenge to tear this wall down happened.
What really draws the emotion are the stories, monuments and memorials to the families torn apart, lives turned upside down, and communities destroyed because of the greed and politics from thousands of miles away. Shouldn’t have happened then and we shouldn’t repeat it now.

  • Hop on Hop off 1

    21 de agosto de 2024, Alemanha ⋅ 🌬 72 °F

We took the Big Bus! 90 minute trip around the major sites of Berlin. Alexanderplatz, Checkpoint Charlie, Brandenburg Gate, Tiergarten, a couple of different places to learn about the wall, so much history it’s almost overwhelming. Especially when you remember most of it was rebuilt over the past 80 years after surviving a thousand years of history.
The city is vibrant and very cosmopolitan. We are out by Humboldthain park which has a ton of Turkish, Arabian, Indian and other ethnicities living and thriving together. Food choices are amazing with many new mixtures (orange and basil ice cream, not too bad!). We discovered curry wurst is basically a hot dog with more flavored ketchup.
We use the S- and U-Bahn regularly leaving Myrtille inside the garage.
Another retired couple joined us for the next few weeks. This is their first trip to Europe so we are happy to take them places we love.
    More later!

  • Hop on and ride the SBahn

    23 de agosto de 2024, Alemanha ⋅ ☁️ 75 °F

Yesterday was arrival day for our friends so we did a lot of bus time and a little walking. After a solid night of sleep, they were ready to go! Went down to Checkpoint Charlie, stopped for the obligatory picture, then walked almost 2 miles to see the topography of terror, an interesting section describing the rise of national socialism (Nazi) and Hitler. Then how they were able to shape the narrative, and spark some actions, which led the general population to believe their actions were warranted.
Not trying to go political but there are many echos of current politics so let’s learn from the past.
Moving forward we went to the site of the 1933 book burning, onto Brandenburg gate, and saw the victory column.
After getting yelled at for trying to take a picture of the US Embassy, we wandered into the tiergarten to see memorials to the Romas (gypsies) and other marginalized races the Nazis tried to eliminate along with the Jews. There was an interesting and disturbing map showing the 40-50 work and death camps, many dedicated to eliminating a specific group.
Off to get curry wurst, Russian memorial, then back on the train for naps at the hotel. Dinner with our friends from Berlin and tucked in for the night.

  • Schloss Charlotta

    24 de agosto de 2024, Alemanha ⋅ ☀️ 81 °F

We are a nice breakfast and got on the UBahn and headed to Westside (in Berlin) to take the bus to our destination. We visited Schloss Charlotta and the gorgeous gardens. A peaceful, cool walk on a hot day.
The park has the Spree River on one side and the train on the back side. The Schloss is the front and hospital in the other side. However, the gardens are a few acres large. There are a few lakes and many walking paths. Gorgeous roses and wield flowers.
There is a family mausoleum and a smaller (three story) house named Belvedere.
After our walk we went to a local pub and enjoyed a cold beverage and lunch. Lea and CJ shared what sausages, sliced pork (ham) and sauerkraut and roasted potatoes. Glynn had soup potato soup.potato soup with a sausage and bread and Bill ate a pizza style bread. We walked to the city hall (clock tower and library). And then took the train home- of course naps, reading time, feet up and then back out for a walk before dinner. Nothing special - we ate at the mall.
Packing up for our drive tomorrow to Dresden.
