  • 13.5.7 Comuna 13

    March 20, 2019 in Colombia ⋅ 🌧 23 °C

The city of Medellín is organised in so called Comunas. Cumulative 13 has a special roll or place in Medellín, as it is home to many street art pieces, although their creators come from all places in Medellín and also from world wide.

However, their is mostly a lot of symbolism in their art through which the artists express their view of the history of Columbia and Medellín, in particular. You have to take a closer look at those paintings to realise the “real” meaning of it.
Speaking of which, the impression made is often a reference to the FARC (terrorist or rebellious group, depending on your perspective), the para militaries and the governmental corruption or misalignment with the people’s expectations.

There is a lot to tell, but I leave that for another time.

  • 13.5.9 El Castillo Museo y Jardines

    March 22, 2019 in Colombia ⋅ 🌧 22 °C

I visited also El Castillo en Medellín, which was a little bit disappointing, although it is very well preserved and managed. Most interestingly, they have a large collection of racing bikes from all ages. I don’t see how that fits in there, but the French and German families living in it in the past were some how bike fanatics.Read more

  • 13.6 El región de café

    March 24, 2019 in Colombia ⋅ ⛅ 19 °C

Another long bus ride into the coffee “pocket” of Columbia. Look at the satellite picture and you know why it’s a pocket.

It is rain season from February to the end of April and so it is a lot of water around you, when you walk around the beautiful nature. So temperatures range from 12 to 28°C (54 to 82 °F), depending on the weather. On sunny days it can get really hot and humid of course.

Here, I visited my first Finca, “Casa Finca Country”, which is also a hostel.

  • 13.8 Lost in the hills

    March 26, 2019 in Colombia ⋅ ⛅ 19 °C

Here, I did a tour to a waterfall, which turned out to be a a hike to a river, which developed into a mountain/hill hiking, which extended into a river hike, leading to a dead end, opening a option for a second visit of the places on the way here, but being in a sprint back to the town, which was enormously exhausting, which leads me to now, where I need to recover from that trip.Read more

  • 13.9.1 Finca La Playa Verde

    April 2, 2019 in Colombia ⋅ 🌧 22 °C

So, until the April 20th I will be working on this organic farm. We have a cat here, four dogs, three chicken, five to seven colibri, other birds, three humans, 1729 mosquitos, other stuff that wants to suck your blood and all sorts of fruits.Read more

  • 13.9.4 How to work with bamboo

    April 4, 2019 in Colombia ⋅ 🌧 25 °C

Not so easy, as one might think. Bamboo has quite big spikes on its branches and the older ones have a bark that puts splinters in your skin if you are not careful.

Also it can be very very adamant, causing the task of working with it to be intractable sometimes. Nonetheless, the work is fun and with some practice, you get the swing, quite literally!Read more

  • 13.9.5 Hitchhiking

    April 12, 2019 in Colombia ⋅ ⛅ 20 °C

Hitchhiking is a very useful way of making a distance in Columbia; especially for smaller inter-town rides. So here we took a avocado tuck to the town of Filandia and had a coffee.

  • 13.11 Suesca

    April 28, 2019 in Colombia ⋅ 🌧 18 °C

We visited this little town (pueblo) named Suesca. It is famous for its “cliffs” where many many people climb every day. There is also this railroad track, which is still used by the way, which leads the hikers to all the different spots so start your climb.
But not all the people climb there; it is beautiful without as well. And you can even access some parts without climbing, as you can see on the pictures.

  • 13.12 Monserrate (Bogotá)

    May 1, 2019 in Colombia ⋅ ⛅ 17 °C

A very nice (and gratis) hike up to Monserrate, a church, viewpoint, cellular antenna station and thus a tourist magnet; Well, rather less because of the last aspect.

Anyway I enjoyed it a lot. And it was good sports with less smog.

But here is a challenge for you all: What do you notice?

  • 13.13.1 Ranch

    May 7, 2019 in Colombia ⋅ ⛅ 22 °C

Change of plans! Actually we wanted to go south, however we found a ranch of Swiss lady how married a Colombian guy and his father “needs” (is happy to have) help with th pe ranch/finca.

So we ended up in this remote area and by that I mean really remote! We are 2 km on a mountain road outwards of anything you can call town or village, and the last 750m have to be overcome on foot; During which you gain another 100-200m altitude. But look how amazing this is!Read more

  • 13.13.2 Ranch life

    May 9, 2019 in Colombia ⋅ 🌧 22 °C

Working on the ranch includes feeding the animals, mostly horses, cutting their food, collecting eggs and cleaning the stables.

The work is not that hard though. The most exhausting thing is the walking up and down of the mountain. But I enjoy the workout a lot and it’s very nice to be in this environment. It even doesn’t smell that bad; Or I just don’t smell it anymore!Read more

  • 13.14.1 Desierto de Tatacoa (rojo=red)

    May 17, 2019 in Colombia ⋅ ⛅ 25 °C

On my way to Ecuador I really wanted to stop at the Desert of Tatacoa, which is just such an amazing place. We spend two nights there which gave us a full day to explore this super hot desert.
We started early at 7 in the morning to escape the over 30°C temperatures from noon to 3 p.m.; And those are the temperatures in the shade! But worse is the intensity of the sun, which is just so strong at 3000m altitude.
But is was so worth it, because the environment is so beautiful.

  • 13.15 San Augustin (Chaquirá)

    May 20, 2019 in Colombia ⋅ ☁️ 19 °C

My last stop in Colombia was San Augustin, famous for its indigenous engravings and statues. Several hundred years ago, these tribes lived in this region and went all over the place with their handcraft. Unluckily the damn french guy who bought the place (how ever he did that), raised the entry fees to 57.000 pesos, which is almost 30$US. That #@£f]€~-£4&sm’)£(. So didn’t visit the main sight, but rather another one called Chaquirá; And yes pronounced like the singer.
It was still nice and the view spectacular, although the pictures can’t reflect it properly.
