0 Searching for the right gear

    25. April 2018 in Deutschland ⋅ ⛅ 12 °C

„A good journey is a journey where the journey is the reward!“, a wise person once said.

I take that as my philosophy for the trip I am about to go on. And my interpretation of that regarding the planing is, that you should not plan to much and take things as they come. My motto therefore is: „Stay, where it‘s nice and where it‘s not, you better think twice“. That being set, no hostel booking is necessary, (almost) no flights to be scheduled, no hesitation required and my thoughts directed only ahead and never back. Yehaaa, no more planing, live the life in total freedom. But wait, ....
However, as a good German I always have doubts and I like to complain, because otherwise if you’re satisfied, there is no more motivation for progress and improvement, so better never show that you are. Ok then, let‘s think this though once: What do I need for the journey to do it as freely as a want to? Who do I have to say good by to? How, or even if at all, do I document the journey? How do I travel? How the heck do I communicate there? Holy s**t, do I need visas? Where can I get shot? What are the countries norms and traditions? ... How do I pay for everything? And how the f**k do I get there at the first place?

Damn, I thought I do not want to plan! Ok I am an educated person, you can figure this out! ... Ok, this may work! I only plan in such a way, that I am personally prepared, but no planning of the rout or directions I take. Nice, so that would be 1. Travelling Gear, 2. Communication and 3. What awesome food do the countries have? I guess that is about it. Let’s do it.

    Looking forward, Julius

  • 0.1 Booking confirmed!

    6. Juni 2018 in Deutschland ⋅ ☀️ 23 °C

Finally I booked the first flights for the journey.
Because a stopover in a city is not very efficient, instead of waiting at the airport for the connection flight, I decided to stay at those stopover cities for a while. For instance, instead of flying to Norfolk (VA), to visit my family, with a connection flight in Reykjavik, I stay in Iceland for a week.

Side fact: If you fly to the US with a stop in Iceland, then both flights are likely to be < 7 hours long. Which is a different category of flight and airlines have to pay less (e.g. no food is served). This makes the ticket less expensive.

The same thing I do on the Bahamas. Because you currently are not allowed to travel from the US to Cuba as a tourist, I have a stopover in Nassau for one week, since I first have to fly there and then to Cuba.

    So here is my schedule:

    1. Düsseldorf to Reykjavik on the 10th of August in the evening
    Seven nights stay
    2. Reykjavik to Norfolk, VA on August 31th in the afternoon
    Seventeen nights with my family
    3. Norfolk to Nassau on September 17th in the morning
    Seven nights stay
    4. Nassau to Havana on the 24. of September in the morning
    Eleven nights Cuban Flair
    5. Havana to Cancún on October 5th in the afternoon
Stay as long as I want! Further travel rout by bus to ... where ever I want!

So, awesome first part with an ecologically footprint that is comparable with Godzilla!
However, if anyone wants to join me for a time, you are very welcomed!

    Looking forward! Yeahhh

  • 0.3 Escaping the city

    14. Juli 2018 in Irland ⋅ 🌧 17 °C

While the meadows in and around Dublin were all brown, we finally got the magazine pictures that are typical for Ireland. Interestingly, the east of Ireland had a dry period of over a month (No climate change Mr. Trump!).

And of course we had a B&B accommodation. The Irish are so polite and friendly. Liked it a lot!
If you want to ride a book or alike, ... best place to be!

And look at that awesome read! Gorgeous!
Although, some obstacles in the way!

  • 0.4 The rough Irish coast

    15. Juli 2018 in Irland ⋅ 🌧 18 °C

To be honest, the west coast of Ireland is a little to rough for me to be there for a longer time. However, it is incredibly beautiful. I can imagine what it would be like if there was sun (weather was not so nice so far).

Just a little north of Doolin are very rocky cliffs that compete against the everlasting waves of the Atlantic Ocean and winds blowing there.

We also visited a old tomb, that is over 5000 years old. Wonder how they built it? One explanation is, that the top plate was on a heap of dirt and the two side plates were heaved in a vertical position after removing the dirt and mud from the side. Afterwards, they removed the inner soil beneath the top plate. And voilà, tomb is ready for the dead!

  • 0.6 Meeting family in Cork

    17. Juli 2018 in Irland ⋅ ⛅ 17 °C

We had a 2.5 days stay in Cork. Much nicer city than Dublin I have to say. Good pubs, a little cleaner and also more interesting architecture. The University College of Cork (UCC) has just one campus with 18,000 students which is amazing. It has incredibly well preserved old buildings which are still used for educational purposes. I wish I had the chance to study there!

Especially the students, but in fact most Irish people, are ... lets say used to drinking alcohol. Mostly beer and whiskey. A must do for me was therefore to visit the Old Jameson Distillery where I bought a whiskey you can fill yourself, directly from the cask. The result is a 0.7 l bottle of Irish Black Barrel Whiskey with your own label, your now entry in the records and a lot lighter purse. The cask strength is 60.6 vol. % and it taste ... aaaawesome!

As every day, we also enjoyed the pub life in Cork downtown with the obligatory live music, which is really enjoyable (once you get used to it).

    What a lovely day!

  • 0.6.1 The Brighton of Cork

    18. Juli 2018 in Irland ⋅ ⛅ 18 °C

Twenty minutes from Cork is a enlivened city, named Kinsale. I would recommend everyone to go there and walk the Scilly Walk to get to the Charle's Fort. The view is incredible form the Scilly Walk and the Fort provides insight in the history of the region, as it one of two forts, which were built to protect the passage to the port of Kinsale. The James Fort is located on the opposite side of the passage.Weiterlesen

    22. August 2018 in Deutschland ⋅ ☀️ 28 °C

I joined a very nice wedding and we were on the beach of the public bath at Jungfernheide, which was a very nice idea of the couple. After the official marriage at noon, we the fiesta went on there ... and I liked it aaalot!

  • 2.1 Reykjadalur (Hot "Springs")

    25. August 2018 in Island ⋅ ☀️ 8 °C

Want to enjoy free hot „springs“ in Iceland?

Go to „The Valley of Reykjadalurl“! Take a 40 min walk/hike up into the hills. There you find a beautiful hot ... well „river“ rather than springs, but it is nice and warm. If you take a closer look on the satellite picture, you can spot the small levees built by the visitors, to create small (hot) tubs. And of course I had to do some construction, too. Awesoooooome!

Very big recommendation from my side.

  • 2.2 Snorkelling in Silfra (Thingvellir)

    26. August 2018 in Island ⋅ ☀️ 10 °C

Another very expensive event, but when do you have the time (or chance) to this again?

Snorkelling in Silfra was ..... very cold ..... in the first place. But only your face and your hands. Luckily, you wear a dry suit. Still, the water temperature is 2°-3°C! Can’t help it, I needed to do that. So we went on a fabulous and impressive float through the crack that splits the North American and Eurasian tectonic plate. Look at that awesome clear water ... gorgeous!

The money was totally worth it. And the Mexican guides were sympathic and likeable. Even got some contacts and tips for Cancún and south Mexico.

  • 2.5 Seljalandsfoss & Skógafoss

    28. August 2018 in Island ⋅ ⛅ 11 °C

    Iceland has so many waterfalls!

We stopped at two more, Seljalandsfoss and Skógafoss. Both located near the coast.
Seljalandsfoss is one where you can walk behind the fall.
The more famous is Skógafoss. Very impressive and very nice footage I got there. If you walk up the hills along the river, you can discover even more waterfalls. All different and the scene is just extraordinary! Great!

Coming up: very nice clips I filmed!

  • 2.6 Black Beach of Vik (Reynisdrangar)

    28. August 2018 in Island ⋅ ⛅ 12 °C

Very famous and well visited (especially by Asian people): The Black Beach of Vik!

Of course we stopped there and took a walk on the beach, which feels ... different. Although it was cold, the weather was nice and the hexagonal stone structures, which are created when hot lava stone is cooling and solidifying, were presented in a mystic light of the sun clashing through the rainy clouds!Weiterlesen

  • 2.9 Blue Lagoon

    30. August 2018 in Island ⋅ 🌧 10 °C

Finally and somehow also sadly, we were back in Reykjavik.

One final thing we booked in advance! The Blue Lagoon. Expensive, but worth the price.

A thermal spring or bath which is fuelled with the water of the geothermal power plant located next to it. Traditionally, the plant operators directed the water, which comes from two kilometres depth and is used for heating, to an open area where it created a lake. The lake was then used by locals for relaxation and enjoyment. Because of the silica, sulfur and other natural substances (mainly salts) in the water, it evolves this fabulous colour. And in combination with the black surrounding ... a mazing!

It’s supposed to be good for your skin! Lots of beauty products are sold at the place.

  • 3.1 Waves on the Outer Banks

    4. September 2018 in den USA ⋅ ⛅ 29 °C

First day in Norfolk and immediately left to go to the beach house in Waves on the Outer Banks.
Best weather I had there, ever. And this is my 6th, 7th, ... 8th time there? Not sure. But it was super cool. Also the company was quite enjoyable.

However, the Outer Banks suffer from strong hurricanes and the rising tides. Luckily, our house is in third row and not at the ocean front, which makes it more protected.

If you are interested, you can book the house here:
