• Atherton to Cooktown, FNQ

    July 17, 2020 in Australia ⋅ ☀️ 24 °C

Strong winds ensured the reef was out of our reach
Yet perfect for windsurfers at Yorkey’s Knob Beach.
As skies turned grey it’s time to leave the sand
And venture up the range to Atherton Tableland.

Mamu Skywalk enabled views of rainforest top
Lake Tinaroo was chosen for our few days stop.
Where Pademelons arrived nightly for a hand feed
And a variety of birds ate the tropical fruits & seed.

We serenely paddled a kayak before the rain came
The Curtain & Cathedral fig trees we did visit again.
At Yungaburra we spied a shy Platypus at play
Feasting on local strawberries to end our day.

Chasing waterfalls was next on our activity list
Enjoying the search and the cool swirling mist.
Josephine, Malanda, Millaa Millaa and Millstream
Circumnavigating Lake Eacham then Lake Barrine.

Via Mt Molloy to Cooktown along smooth roads
Passing trucks and road trains hauling hefty loads.
Cattle seek sparse shade in a landscape so brown
Peppered by hundreds of mini red termite mounds.

Sunset viewed from Grassy Hill that is steep
A caravan our only choice of a place to sleep.
Chris went on a fishing trip up the Endeavour River
Bagging a 6kg cod which made a delicious dinner.
