    Rangitoto Island

    Today I caught the 25 minute ferry ride to Rangitoto Island. It is a volcanic Island and I did the 259 meter climb to the summit for beautiful views over the Gulf and Harbour where I ate my lunch. I also walked around the crater rim and through the lava caves although I only went a little way up the tunnel as I was a bit scared by myself and the I phone torch didn’t light up much!I came back with a detour through a beautiful fern gully.     Bastion Point Lookout

    Bastion Point overlooks the Waitemata Harbour and has beautiful panoramic views of the city. I got off the bus here and walked around and then down along the foreshore. Hardly anyone was around... it was very peaceful.The memorial is for Michael Joseph Savage, one of New Zealand’s most popular leaders.Weiterlesen

    Tallis Wine

    Had a lovely wine tasting at Tallis Wines and purchased a dozen of their sparkling Shiraz. Also had a variety of platters featuring produce from the local area...

    Flying High

    What a magnificent day to glide and fly. It is quite snug in the cockpit once strapped in however foot pedals are adjustable which was a big relief.
    Going into the 360degree loop was fun and a couple of things I distinctly remember...it begins by pushing the nose down so that the glider gains speed which is a buzz in itself :)
    Then the pilot pulls back on the joystick and up, up and over you go, you lose your tummy a little which I expected.
    Overall the flight is very exhilarating as well as being relaxing which is an interesting combination of emotions.
    Oh yeah...the pilot was a guy called Kirk, so Captain Kirk seemed appropriate.
    Benalla is a great place to glide because it is very flat and gets hot in summer which creates lots of thermals.    Weiterlesen

    Up, Up and Away

    Well here we are...strapped in and ready to go. Parachute fitted which also makes me wonder how well it would go because we only got to 3,000 feet and that doesn’t allow for much time to fill the canopy.
    Anyways, having the gang there always makes things fun!
    Some glider facts...
    1. Can range in cost from $4k to $400k
    2. On a hot day with plenty of thermals you can fly for 7 hours plus
    3. Eagles often point the way for the pilots to find the thermals
    4. Gliders are easy to steer with joystick and foot pedals
    5. Loop the loop is exhilarating
    6. When tow rope is released the glider drops quite suddenly
    7. Very peaceful when aloft just sound of air rushing past    Weiterlesen

    Red Hill - Merricks Walk

    We walked the 13km round trip from Red Hill to Merricks on a beautiful winters day.
    The path is wide and accommodates horses, cyclists, runners and walkers and judged by the number of people we passed...very popular.
    The day was majestic as was the company and Jenny has a penchant for picking really good walks in the local areas we visit.
    We had lunch at the Red Hill pantry and I ate the best chicken pie I have ever eaten...photo supplied just because it was that good :).
    Lucky they ran out as I would have ordered two for sure...    Weiterlesen

    Visit to Seppelt Great Westrern

    I had visited this winery before yet had never understood all of the history involved in how it operates today.
    It produces sparkling wines and has done for 100 plus years.
    The winery is now mostly a historical museum that houses wine barrels and equipment from yesteryear however they do have special dinner settings with paired wines that make visiting the place so special.
    The winery sits atop of a massive deposit of soft limestone which was initially dug out in the forlorn search for gold, however because the digging was relatively easy it allowed the winery to develop a chamber of wine storage areas that it appears had been used for a very long time. One such section even had a locked gate as it housed the most expensive wines that Seppelt had to offer.    Weiterlesen

    Megafauna Centre

    This space was quite revelatory and first suggested by Loy as a place to check out. It showcases the animals that lived thousands and millions of years ago and their relative size compared to today.
    Quite a fascinating display enhanced by the state of the art archeological equipment that is used to protect the fossils both on site and in transit.    Weiterlesen

    Alice Springs Botanical Gardens

    The botanical gardens were very well maintained and interesting from the point of view that there are quite a few different plant habitats in the area.
    Climbing the rocky lookout was the most interesting part as we caught sight of rock wallabies which we had not seen prior on the trip.
    Cute little things they are and very nimble on the rocks making it hard for predators to catch them.    Weiterlesen

    The School of the Air

    The school of the air was developed as a way of educating children who were located in remote outback areas of Australia whose only option was to be educated via the radio.
    The technology has now advanced so much that virtual classrooms are now the theme.
    I seem to remember that each child has an education grant of approximately 20k which allows them to install satellite dishes and purchase laptops and other necessary technology.

    Alice Springs Desert Park

    Here are some of the examples of the amazing camouflage of some of the desert species.
    The Horny Devil is one of the more amazing reptiles that only eats ants...that’s it as well as drinking through capillaries in its feet.
    The death adder is soooo well camouflaged that you would never see it in the wild.
    Pretty much the same with most of the lizards although they move more quickly and from that perspective are easier to spot.
    The road out to the park was an easy cycle and on the way back we were able to see hawks and other birds of prey combing the ground cover for something to stalk.
    It stands to logic that many species decline when the country is in drought as the water sustains so much of the wildlife and since it hasn’t rained since Nov ‘18 things on the wildlife front are quiet...just waiting for the next big rain to start it all up again.    Weiterlesen

    Bush Tucker and Weapons

    We had a fantastic talk and experience with Leroy a classy First Nations blackfella who shared some history and insights into how indigenous people lived off the land and the weapons and tools that they used to hunt and survive.
    He is a great example of how indigenous aboriginals can work with the Parks Service and provide a depth of experience that is so authentic.1    Weiterlesen

    Alice Springs Desert Park

    This park is located approx 8 kms out of Alice and we hired bikes to ride out there so that we could have a good look around.
    The traffic around Alice is minimal as you could imagine :).
    The park houses several different exhibits for emus, dingoes, snakes and other reptiles.
    There are also quite a few aviaries that housed different species of birds...zebra finches, black cockatoos, budgerigars etc
    Without doubt the most interesting exhibit for me was the death adder and the thorny devil that was picking off ants at random. Amazing...    Weiterlesen
