    Just arrived at Kununurra airport under a cloudless sky…and a balmy 28c.
    We have a couple of hours here before taking a two hour bus trip to El Questro for our clamping experience.

    The beginning of a 3.5 week trip to an area of Australia which is beautiful and picturesque and a tribute to our amazing late Aunt Betty and Uncle Harry who are the inspiration for the trip.

    Henschke Winery

    Our penultimate tasting was at Henschke were we were treated to some wine from some of the oldest vines in Barossa.
    We also tasted a grape juice which was particularly yummy so we bought half a dozen as well as a couple of other wines for cellaring.
    Our final winery was Elderton where 36 years ago Jen and I purchased one of their Reisling’s which we carried around in the pannier on our bicycles as we rode around the Barossa on our first or second holiday after being married.

    Chin Chin @ Yalumba

    We decided as a group to go to Yalumba in the evening and experience the “Go Go Lawn” which was a partnership with Chin Chin restaurant and Yalumba.
    We went on a Sunday evening and only stayed for about an hour so that we could sample some food which consisted of potato gems, chicken wings, spring rolls and a subway roll (their version of Subway)
    As Bet would say it was a bit of fun…but missed the mark imo.    Leer más

    St Hugo Winery

    Another Bort special with an amazing lunch and my main course was exceptional. Duck with roasted potatoes 🥔 a piquant sauce slightly sweet to the taste and a sultana, red onion and fennel salad which was divine.
    We also got to speak to a winemaker over lunch who maxed out the experience with his knowledge and demeanor.
    The interior design of the restaurant was also very tasteful which is a feature of the wineries in the region.
    Some of the bigger wineries and brands have extensive tasting areas that are so tastefully appointed and enhance the experience of tasting the wine.
    Other boutique wineries such as Rockford resemble old cottages with all sorts of paraphernalia on the walls charting the progress of the winery and the families involved.
    One thing common to almost all was a log fire which on a cold autumnal day made the wine tasting experience so much more enjoyable and memorable.    Leer más

    Hentley Farm Estate

    This was my favorite destination on the trip 🤓.
    Firstly I thought that the wine was exceptional for such a young vineyard as the fruit vines are only 23 years old as compared to some in the Barossa that are @ 150 - 160 years old.
    Secondly, the location was exquisite. Located in a little gully is the original old homestead cottage that has been fully restored as a tasting room and maintains its old word charm which transports you to another bygone era.
    Thirdly, our hostess Ingrid was so knowledgeable about the region and the wine and was a consummate wine guide and host.    Leer más

    Barossa B&B

    After arriving at our Barossa B&B both Polly and Jen pulled together a grazing plate of some special foods from the local area.
    Our hosts had stacked the fridge and pantry with some lovely local produce which was greatly appreciated.
    Our B&B was beautifully appointed and made our stay very enjoyable with the exception of very cold 🥶 shower water imo.
    Polly bought back memories of our trip to England with her beautiful little map so we made the most of our visit to the area.    Leer más

    Chapel Hill Winery

    This was such a picturesque winery and I thoroughly enjoyed the whole experience due to the hosts and the quality of the wines.
    Our host a guy called Bruce just happened to have lived in Bristol and so shared some mutual stories of landmarks etc.
    The tasting rooms were situated in the chapel which had been purchased as part of the land sale and converted into a beautiful little winery.
    The stained glass windows were exquisite in colour and were purchased at an opportunity shop in Adelaide and transported to Fairy Hill.    Leer más

    The Cove

    The was a special place to conclude our holiday. It was a piece of farm land that has been converted to a luxury escape.
    The accommodation sits atop of a beautiful bay that is for the sole use of the residents and Jen and I took up the offer doing some of our cold water therapy in a couple of the rock pools.
    The highlight of the stay was watching the penguins 🐧 come in from the ocean after feeding and return to their burrows.
    I even got a chance to touch and stroke one which was extra special as he turned away from the group and got isolated so he sort of froze and I helped him on his way.    Leer más

    Hellyers Whiskery

    Jen organised a visit to a local renown whisky distillery which was a treat as we were schooled in the finer aspects of the whisky making process.
    We even bottled our own special single malt blend with a wax seal and taken from a special oak cask.
    We also had lunch in the restaurant which was also quite special.    Leer más

    Cradle Mountain Chalet

    We decided to have a snack and a local cocktail here and before imbibing we walked around the “enchanted walk” one of Tasmania’s most renown short walks. Beautiful lichen gullies with a clear mountain stream cascading through the middle.
    Very picturesque…
    We shared a bowl of chips and a couple of Bush Martini’s which were unfortunately nothing special and tasted a little like limoncello 😳.    Leer más

    Cradle Mountain (cont’d)

    This was the beautiful vista at the end of our walk from Marion’s lookout which enabled us to get some amazing uninterrupted views of the mountain and the beautiful Dove lake in the foreground.
    I decided to continue my ice bath tradition and sat in Dove lake sans clothes for about 10 minutes.
    Very funny as some Chinese tourists came over for a better look 😛.    Leer más

    Cradle Mountain

    Time to revisit Cradle Mountain and much has changed since our last visit.
    New facilities and a much more versatile menu of walks even with a shuttle bus service.
    Cradle Mountain is a locality and mountain in the Central Highlands region of the Australian state of Tasmania. The mountain is situated in the Cradle Mountain-Lake St Clair National Park.

    At 1,545 metres (5,069 ft) above sea level, it is the sixth-highest mountain in Tasmania.

    The locality of Cradle Mountain is a rural locality in the local government areas of Meander Valley, Kentish and West Coast in the Launceston and North-west and west local government regions of Tasmania.

    The park contains many walking trails, and is where hikes along the well-known Overland Track usually begin.
    Major features are Cradle Mountain and Barn Bluff in the northern end, Mount Pelion East, Mount Pelion West, Mount Oakleigh and Mount Ossa in the middle and Lake St Clair in the southern end of the park. The park is part of the Tasmanian Wilderness World Heritage Area.

    Animals present in the park include: Tasmanian pademelons, Bennett's wallabies, quolls, Tasmanian devils, short-beaked echidnas, platypuses, common wombats, possums, forest ravens and currawongs.    Leer más

    Many towns in Tasmania have developed some quirky concepts to draw tourists.
    Sheffield is no exception and has developed a reputation for murals so most parts of the town are festooned with historical and contemporary murals.
    And as you may guessed people come to visit for that reason alone.
    There are also some quirky shops in Sheffield that make it interesting.

    Sheffield is a town 23 kilometres inland from Devonport on the north-west coast of Tasmania. Sheffield has long been the rural hub for the Mount Roland area. The Sheffield area is well known for its high quality butterfat production via dairy farming. The area is suitable for lamb and beef production. The town of Railton is nearby. At the 2021 census, Sheffield had a population of 1,602.    Leer más

    Archie’s Nob

    We visited another National park just outside of Port Sorrell.
    It was another beautiful day and so we divided to walk to a local landmark called Archie’s Nob.
    We were fortunate enough to come across three snakes on this walk…2 Tiger snakes and 1 White lipped snake which is small and also venomous.
    We also noticed a significant amount of die back with the grass trees around the top of the island. There is some form of fungus that is very powerful and overtime it seems inevitably kills the host plant …very sad.    Leer más
