  • LAS VEGAS Here we come!

    August 14 in the United States ⋅ ⛅ 102 °F

For Lees birthday, we went to Las Vegas. Lee was anxious to drive (he never drives in NYC) and he had a good stint behind the wheel in our 4.5 drive. We started out at home at 72.9 degrees and then drove halfway to Vegas with a stop in the Mohave Desert and it was 106 degrees (but it was still early in the day).

BTW, we planned this trip around Lee joining us in CA and then going to Vegas to see Kelly Clarkson in Concert. We bought great seats and then the week before, Kelly had to sadly cancel all of her concert in Vegas in August. "Best Laid Plans ..." but although not our plan. we booked up 3 full days of great activities.

Netflix Bites has a menu inspired by series and films, including Bridgerton, Squid Game and Stranger Things. Some of the dishes: “Eleven’s Feast,” a meal that combines some of the Stranger Things character’s favorite foods, or the "Dalgona Rum Buzz" cocktail, needle not included, referring to the candy featured in a challenge from Squid Game. Lava Cake dessert from Floor Is Lava, whose name is “The Dessert Is Lava.” Or the "Netflix & Chil-aquiles", a breakfast entree that takes its name from a suggestive date night idea. "Orange is the New Mac", mac and cheese dusted with Hot Cheetos, to honor the ladies who make orange look so stylish. "Too Hot to Handle", a bloody Mary, that lives up to its name with plenty of cayenne and a habanero-infused vodka. • Boulder City, Nevada - FOR BREAKFAST

    August 15 in the United States ⋅ ☁️ 86 °F

Known as the “Best City By A Dam Site”, Boulder City (pop 15,000) 209 sq miles is about 26 miles from Las Vegas and the last stop before Hoover Dam. Its sole reason for existence was the need to house workers contracted to build the Hoover Dam in built by the Bureau of Reclamation and the Six Companies that worked on the dam. Because the Hoover Dam project represented a focus for optimism for our country during The Depression, the town was to be an additional manifestation of this optimism with clean-living, the prohibition of alcohol and gambling and good quality of life.Read more

  • HOOVER DAM- 1 or 3 Overview

    August 15 in the United States ⋅ 🌬 91 °F

How to Tame the Colorado? Build a DAM! We took a half day from our visit to LV and went to the HOOVER DAM. We arrived to see the spectacular views, spent time in their lookout areas, went to their museum, watched the movie and then took a detailed guided tour with a guide that included: a visit to the historic tunnels, a ride original elevator to the top of Hoover Dam, a walk through the inspection tunnels at the center of Hoover Dam, views the Colorado River through the inspection ventilation shaft and a guided power plant tour. At the end, we realized this fascinating tour was 3 hours. So interesting. Yes, we have 300 photos but only a few are posted here. This first posting gives you some overview from the signage outside, looking over the dam.Read more

  • Hoover Dam - 2 of 3 TUNNELS

    August 15 in the United States ⋅ 🌬 91 °F

HOOVER DAM, named for the 31st President of the US has provided electricity and water to the Southwest since the 1930s, without which cities like LA could not have grown. or the surrounding regions farmlands irrigated (which supply 80% of our nations fruits and vegetables).

It took decades to approve construction of a dam at Black Canyon, but only five years to build it. Once started, it took 39,816,000 man-hours, 4,452 man-years, 840 miles of pipes, 6.36 million cubic yards of concrete (with a special formula of concrete coming). A Nationwide Effort Support for the Hoover Dam Project came from ALL 48 states. People and materials (i.e., 5,055 workers from CA as well as the turbines, rock for the terrazzo floors) came from each state. The dam straddles the border of Arizona and Nevada in the Black Canyon of the Colorado River and was dedicated by President Franklin D. Roosevelt in 1935.

  • Hoover Dam - 3 of 3

    August 15 in the United States ⋅ 🌬 95 °F

Rising 726.4 feet from its foundation, construction began in 1931 and completed in 1936 with the diverted of the river around Black Canyon. A lot of work had to be done before construction started on the dam itself. The biggest task was diverting the Colorado River around the site so the dam could be built across the riverbed. Cross-canyon cableways moved heavy equipment into and out of the canyon. Workers drilled and blasted, boring tunnels through canyon walls around the dam site (remember what this took in 1931)! The diverted river flowed through four concrete-lined tunnels, each 50’ in diameter.

Hoover Dam captures the river's energy and turns it into electrical power for 6 states. The first commercial generator went online in 1936, electrifying Los Angeles and Boulder City. The last of the 17 commercial generators was installed. The final part of the project was to install generators to get Hoover Dam producing electricity. Once the dam was built, the project's last 500 workers finished construction of the powerhouse and installed penstocks and lateral pipes. Hoover Dam doesn't just hold back the Colorado River. It converts the potential energy stored in the water of Lake Mead to mechanical energy. As the water flows down through the dam's piping system, the flowing water spins the turbine at the bottom of the generator. The generator converts the turbine's mechanical energy into electricity that is sent to homes and businesses. The first commercial generator went online in 1936, electrifying Los Angeles and Boulder City and then the last of the 17 commercial generators was installed.

  • The Strip - Sahara Hotel & "Secret Bar"

    August 15 in the United States ⋅ ☀️ 99 °F

SAHARA Hotel- Opened in the early 50's and was the 6th hotel on the Strip. Although It has been totally done over with 4 major renovations over the years, it still has a Desert/Safari Theme. In its day, as they say, it was known for big lounge acts with Elvis, and the Rat Pack. We have stayed at the Sahara the last 3 times we were in Las Vegas.

"The Cabinet of Curiosities" - brings together the extraordinary and the everyday. A bar and lounge where we enjoyed a unique cocktail for Lee's birthday. It is designed to make you wonder and be inspired by cabinets filled with STRANGE objects from around the world.....it sure did!

Lee had never been to a "REAL" Vegas Variety Show, so we took him to see "VEGAS: The Show", a throwback to Las Vegas Revue that made it famous. There was a great mix of performers that performed the songs and shows of "yesteryear".

Then we spent some time at the one and only FLAMINGO, the first hotel that STARTED VEGAS. Yes, the man that started Vegas with this hotel was Bugsy Siegel. We came to give "our respects" to Cousin Bugs. See flamingo video.
