    Our North Carolina Adventure

    February 21 in the United States ⋅ ☀️ 54 °F

Uneventful (that's good) trip from San Diego to Greensboro North Carolina (with a stop in Dallas). The only challenge was leaving at 3am. We arrived at th easiest airport we ever landed at. Easy walk though an interesting "gallery",, luggage was fast and Lauren was waiting for us at baggage claim (where she was able to park a few yards away ...unheard of).

Our three legged trip to NC to visit: Lauren, Bryan & Emma (our 23 & Me "Connections"), Pat & Tom (our Around the World Friends) and Michele & Judson (our Dear Connecticut Friends)!

  • Raleigh - 2 of 4 CAPITOL

    February 25 in the United States ⋅ ☁️ 41 °F

Although the original capital was in New Bern from 1770-1792, it was then moved to Raleigh. We went to the First Capitol Building in Raleigh (1772-1888 when the Supreme Court and Library moved and then in 1963 when General Assembly and State Legislature moved) . One of the interesting statues inside (vs the ones outside that have been "moved to a secure location to preserve them [Confederate]") was a redone Antonio Canova’s statue of George Washington,Read more

  • YATES MILL- Raleigh

    February 26 in the United States ⋅ ☁️ 41 °F

Yates Mill is a "working" (limited) 1756 gristmill located near Raleigh on 174 acres. We received a great education on how grist mills evolved and how they work as well as the history of this specific mill that was saved from destruction a few times over time for history, teaching, current functionality and for its beauty. We then went for a walk on the property, although it was early in the year, still beautiful.Read more

  • Mordecai Historic Park

    February 26 in the United States ⋅ ☁️ 72 °F

We took a private guided tour of the Mordecai House (Plantation) built in 1785, is the centerpiece of Mordecai Historic Park, and is the oldest residence in Raleigh on its original foundation. In addition to the house, the Park includes the birthplace and childhood home of President Andrew Johnson, the Badger-Iredell Law Office, Allen Kitchen and St. Mark's Chapel. The house was named after Moses Mordecai, whose first wife, Margaret Lane, had inherited it from her father Henry. After she died, Mordecai married her sister Ann Lane. In 1824, Mordecai enlarged the house. Moses Mordecai of Bonn, Germany, became one of the original three hundred Jewish families in the United States and one of the few of Ashkenazic Jewish descent. Mordecai descendants owned the mansion property until 1967, when the city purchased the property, turning it over to the Raleigh Historic Sites Commission to supervise and develop as a historic park. The commission was able to obtain many original Mordecai furnishings, as well as preserve the family papers and library.Read more
