  • Devil's Island, French Guiana - 1 of 3

    17 januari 2025, Franska Guyana ⋅ ☀️ 79 °F

    OUR VISIT TO DEVILS ISLAND

In France before 1832, prisoners were held in the hulls of boats that were kept in the harbors, as they were chained together like slaves. In 1840, prison reform moved prisoners to agricultural farms as forced laborers. Eventually French society did not want them in France, even as “slaves”, and decided to ship them off to French Guiana (a French overseas departments in the Americas) and their Islands. After they served out their sentence, the French law stated they were required to stay in French Guiana for a time equal to their original sentence (unless their sentence was more than 8 years, then they had to stay there for life). France did not want their prisoners to come back.

Devils’ Island was a French penal colony, that operated from 1852 - 1952, as one of the three Salvation Islands of French Guiana. IIe Royale was where the general population was kept, Saint-Joseph was for solitary confinement in silence and darkness and Devil’s Island for political prisoners. It was notorious for the staff's harsh treatment of detainees and the tropical climate and diseases that contributed to high mortality that reached 75%.

The vast majority of the more than 80,000 prisoners sent to the Devil's Island prison system never returned to France. Many died due to harsh conditions, sanitation, mosquitoes, disease, treatment, or prisoner violence. Escape? In 1858, 13 escaped and made it to Britain, in 1901 Duval escaped and fled to New York and wrote a book, in 1936 four escaped to St. Thomas and of course, Henri Charriere - the author of Papillion. Lastly, Rene Belbenoit wrote 2 books in Panama but was the only one that decided to return to France to argue for his freedom. Since it was a crime for Devil's Island inmates to re-enter France, he was arrested again and returned - a year in solitary - eventually made his way to the USA and became a US citizen in 1956.

Finally, in 1938, France stopped sending prisoners and in 1953, the facility was closed. In 1990's, Devil's Island becomes a tourist destination but the cable car between Royale Island and Devil's Island deteriorated and had collapsed so on our visit, we stayed on Royale Island.

There have been many books, movies and articles about Devils Island. Before we arrived here, we studied up on the history of the French justice system, the penal colonies of French Guiana, and some of the more infamous stories, in particular the true stories of The Dreyfus Affair and Papillon (see next postings). We also watched the original 1973 Papillon movie starring Steve McQueen and Dustin Hoffman, which tells the story of two men’s lives and attempted escapes from Devils Island. We recommend seeing the original movie!

  • Devil's Island, French Guiana - 2 of 3

    17 januari 2025, Franska Guyana ⋅ ☀️ 79 °F

    PAPILLON
Papillon is a 1973 historical adventure/drama/prison film based on the 1969 autobiography by the French convict Henri Charrière. The film stars Steve McQueen as Charrière ("Papillon") and Dustin Hoffman as Louis Dega. The film's title is French for "Butterfly", referring to Charrière's tattoo and nickname.

"Papillon", a safecracker is framed for murder, convicted and condemned to Devil’s Island. He forms an unlikely alliance with Dega, who is targeted by the other prisoners who suspect him of hiding money, agrees to finance Papillon's escape. Papillon ends up in solitary confinement for 2 years for trying to escape. Later his second escape plan is made from the prison infirmary, when he pays for a boat and he and Dega escape but their boat doesn’t make it and a nun turns them in, giving him 5 more years in solitary. They both end up on Devils Island, where the high cliffs provide a natural barrier for escape attempts. He finds Dega who has adjusted to prison life and has no interest in escaping. The third escape, jumping off the cliff, is a success and he is a free man. He writes a memoir based on his time in prison and escape attempts. For the remainder of his life, he lived a free man. The penal colony in French Guiana did not survive him". Although some say it is not a completely accurate account of Papillon’s days on the Islands, it is a very powerful movie, depicting life on the island and a friendship that helped them survive their terrible conditions.

    DREYFUS
There is much written about Captain Dreyfus and the political scandal that divided the French Government from 1894 until 1906 over a wrongful conviction of treason in the French military. He was accused of giving military secrets to the Germans. It was also a time where antisemitism was rampant in France and Dreyfus was Jewish. Sentenced to life imprisoned on Devils Island, he spent 5 years in these awful conditions there until new evidence revealed the real spy. Unfortunately, the corrupt government let the spy go and Dreyfus was accused of new crimes based on forged documents. An open letter to the newspapers about what happened made this a very public case that was reopened in 1899 with the French very split on his innocence and what was happening in government and misjustice and Dreyfus was the poster boy for this corruption. Antisemites wrote articles against him and supporters did the same and it create unrest until he finally got another conviction and a 10-year sentence of which he eventually was pardoned, released and reinstated as a Major in the army in 1906. He served all of WWI and died in 1935 as a Lieutenant Colonel. It remains a strong example of miscarriage of justice and antisemitism and the power of the press to influence both. Interestingly, Theodor Herzl was a French journalist at the time and this incident was a turning point for him to decide that it was too difficult for Jews to assimilate and exist in Western Europe (which many loyal Jewish Frenchman were finding it increasingly difficult) and began his movement toward the creation of Zionism and Israel.

In October 2021, French President Emmanuel Marcon opened a museum in Medan, dedicated to the Dreyfus affair. He said that nothing could repair the humiliations and injustices Dreyfus had suffered, and "let us not aggravate it by forgetting, deepening or repeating them". Note: There are still (as of at least 2021), articles and books written by the far right that Dreyfus was guilty. The controversy over the Dreyfus Affair continues to be used in discussions on immigration, religious freedom, minority rights and discrimination based on religion and ethnicity, and the French Republic itself.

  • Grenada- St. George's 1 of 3

    19 januari 2025, Grenada ⋅ 🌬 81 °F

Granada is a beautiful small island (21 miles x 12 miles) that is 90 miles from South America. It has beaches, rainforest, mountains (2700’ high). It gained its Independence 50 years ago and are very proud of it (member of British Commonwealth). Like most of the Caribbean Islands its history was the Arawak Indians, pushed out by the Carib Indians and then the Europeans (Columbus came in 1498) and eventually the French. The population of 95,000 is employed in the spice business (Nutmeg, lemongrass, cinnamon and turmeric) and rum. We were just outside the town of St. Georges and spent the day on a kayaking trip where we ha clear bottom kayaks and then swimming. We were in Grand Mal bay were we rowed out to an underground sculpture park. There are 75 sculptures, 31 installed November 2023 called the Coral Carnival Statues. See photos for this interesting art. We spent an hour and half getting to this spot and then rowing back to the beach where we went swimming. Fun day. See 2 videos.Läs mer

  • Martin Luther King Jr. Day

    20 januari 2025, Caribbean Sea ⋅ 🌬 81 °F

This year’s inauguration will be just the second to fall on Martin Luther King Jr. Day. Congress in 1983 decreed that the third Monday in January would be a federal holiday to honor civil rights leader Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Over the intervening four decades, Inauguration Day and Martin Luther King Jr. Day have coincided just once. That was in 1997 when Bill Clinton was inaugurated for his second term. Inauguration Day will next fall on Martin Luther King Jr. Day on January 20, 2053.

  • Iles Des Saintes, Guadeloupe 1 of 2

    20 januari 2025, Guadeloupe ⋅ 🌬 81 °F

Iles des Saintes is an archipelago just south of Guadeloupe. There are 8 small unnamed islands (islet) the two main ones are inhabited. We had a nice day walking around the French town of Terre-de-Haut (the other is Terre-de-Bas). Bourg des Saintes is a small, picturesque French town where the store owners were all French and very helpful. We went home with a unique shirt and mug.

See the butterfly shaped islands where the rum is named for Papillon.

  • St Lucia?

    21 januari 2025, Saint Lucia ⋅ 🌬 79 °F

Beautiful evening and then watched Fred the magician make snow (who we had dinner with). Woke up early, watched sunrise and there was a cool breeze as we looked out at St Lucia (see photos) and planned to be out early for an entire day on a catamaran trip. Fred must have stirred up the seas with his magic because as we were getting off, the Captain got on the loud speaker and told us the seas were 30 knots with 5' swells and no one was getting off, we were leaving the area to roam the Caribbean for another day (we only have 108 miles to go in 24 hours) before getting back to Barbados tomorrow morning.Läs mer

  • BARBADOS 1 of 4 Harrison's Cave

    22 januari 2025, Barbados ⋅ 🌬 84 °F

A unique phenomenon of nature 160' below the surface!
Harrison's Cave is an amazing gallery of stalactites hanging from the roof of the cave, and stalagmites that emerge from the ground, with streams of running water and waterfalls. The stalactites and stalagmites were formed over thousands of years and in some places the stalactites have reached down to the stalagmites and a spectacular pillar has been formed.

We traveled through much of the caves by a small tram and got out at certain points to get a closer look. One main area of the caves is a huge cavern, termed "The Great Hall", measuring over 50 feet in height. After the great Hall we saw "The Village" where some of the formations have joined to form columns after thousands of years. Other areas included "The Chapel," "The Rotunda," and "The Altar."
