  • 20 June Santiago to Vigo

    June 20, 2018 in Spain ⋅ 22 °C

Had an easy train trip and then traffic and crowd shock in Vigo. Took the bus to Samil Beach which was quite nice for a city beach despite being low tide. .
Then enjoyed some shopping in the long pedestrian Rua Principe buying some cheap swimwear. Went to the Casco Vella area for an albarino and octopus tapas tostada then merluza a la plancha at 10:30pm - got into the spanish timezone now. Slept well at the NH Hotel with very helpful front desk.Read more

The Ponte Luis is quite stunning but the town was buzzing with tourists and locals preparing gor tonights festival of Saint John ( San Juan).

  • 4 July Walk Collioure to Banyuls

    July 4, 2018 in France ⋅ 29 °C

Steep walk up to the Castle of St Elme with views over Collioure then Udi and I took the coast route while John went inland. After an hour we thought we were nearly there so enjoyed a 50min swim on a rocky cove. But the day got hotter and it was another 3 hours walking! Once there, Banyuls sur Mer was a really nice town - some tourists but not overbearing. Swum at St Elms beach, un ricard in town, nice dinner in the old town then watched the world cup soccer in a waterfront cafe.Read more

  • 6 Jul Port Bou to Llanca

    July 6, 2018 in Spain ⋅ 28 °C

Breakfast in a local cafe where we struggled to get a double for John, then a hot inland walk. John was not feeling well so Udi and I took on the optional detour to Puig d’Esquers. Ascended past Church of Sant Michael which was eerily open and desserted. It was a tough walk in the heat and particularly difficult negotiating down piles of scree.Read more

  • 7 Jul Llanca to Port de la Selva

    July 7, 2018 in Spain ⋅ 29 °C

Once again the day was hot and we reluctantly passed some inviting beaches.
Enjoyed a tapas lunch in a clinical looking restaurant in Port de la Selva, then wandered the shops with Udi buying a navy blue dress to match her navy bag and navy birkenstocks. Udi and I had an afternoon swim off some rocks.
Dinner was excellent - garlic mussels and a colourful sunset.

  • 8 Jul Port de la Selva to Cadaques

    July 8, 2018 in Spain ⋅ 30 °C

Last day of walking but it was a long coastal one and it was going to be stifling hot. After a breakfast stuff up by the hotel we had a cortado, fresh oj and croissant in a square, then headed off up the mountain. We could see the observatory above Cadaques in the distance. We stopped at a few ruined houses for homous pita bread, then down lots of rocky gorges (and out again), out to the Cap de Creus lighthouse and the rock formationd made famous by Dali’s artwork. It was scorching by now as we traversed old walled stone paths, through olive groves and finally to Cadaques. Tapas lunch, then a rest before a dinner at El Balconnet of gazpacho, whole roast fish and lemon gelato. Buen noches.Read more

  • 9 Jul Resting in Cadaques

    July 9, 2018 in Spain ⋅ 30 °C

Slept well but exhausted after several days of hard walking in the extreme heat.
Long breakfast then to Cadaques art museum, church and Udi and I swum round off the rocks.
Rested till walking to our scheduled visit to Dali’s House at Port Lligat.
We were really impressed with the lovely seaside setting, the perfect positioning of the mirror on their bedroom wall to reflect the sea, the long thin windows like at 24 Gillwinga, the attractive spanish guide and the short movie documenting Dali’s view that Perpignan was the centre of the universe.
Had a seafood dinner on the waterfront, sad it was our last night, pleased at what a good time we had, but noting to not walk in early July due to the heat.

  • 10- 14 Jul Calella de Palafrugell

    July 10, 2018 in Spain ⋅ ☀️ 25 °C

Taxi to Figueres where John and Udi were impressed by the Dali Museum and I wandered through the town. They continued by taxi back to Collioure while I caught the train to Palafruguell and was met by John for a lift to Casa dos Torres B & B which I enjoyed so much last year.
Straight out for a gorgeous swim off the rocks and tapas at Calau.
Spent the next 2 nights here - walking, swimming and eating tapas and wine. Met some interesting guests - Barbara and sicilian Corardo from Brighton, Lex was there with his Colombian wife and baby - such a lovely place.
Then finally the time came to fly out of Barcelona airport and back to Narrabeen.
