    Enormous Hagenia abyssinica and diminutive David.11Viola eminii.1The mist closed in on the forest of Hagenia abyssinica and Hypericum revolutumThis was the adjacent volcanic peak poking through for a few minutes as the mist and rain cleared.1This was my first delightful viewing of giant Lobelia stuhlmannii next to the riverSunbird on a giant Lobelia stuhlmannii.These steep gullies heading up to the top were absolutely festooned with Dendrosenecios and LobeliasDendrosenecio erici-rosenii covered in mosses at high elevation.Up at the top, all that grew there on the black volcanic pumice was mosses, lichens and some grasses1I somehow left my hat behind (I thought it was round my neck) so I used a shopping bag instead!

    David could not resist visiting this dormant volcano, which was 4,507m in height. Booking permits was easy peesi, all done online the day of arriving in Rwanda and heading off for a two-day exploration the very next day. Rwanda’s infrastructure and systems are notably efficient, and we got an immediate sense of this when entering the country from the Gatuna/Katuna Border Post.

    While David conquered the volcano, Shereen relaxed at a nearby camp not to far from the entrance to the National Park. So important to balance hard work with rest 😊    Read more
