Challenge of Rainbow Mountain

5am pick up and we're off again! After a 2 hour drive and a nice breakfast stop, it's time to really challenge ourselves! It's a nail biting 40 min switchback ride to the base. Apparently rail guards are not a thing here 🤪 What sounds like a nice hike ( it's called "Rainbow Mountain after all!") is actually an 8km hike up to 17,060 ft ASL with pitches varying from 25-40. The high altitude makes for a very strenuous climb. BUT, the reward at the top, is well, just unbelievable!? We've never seen anything like it! There was a shaman there when we reached the top, giving thanks to the mountain gods. The 8km trek back down is much easier. Then celebratory lunch, and back through some interesting towns to reach Cusco again. At the end of the day, we are tired but proud we made this trek.
