    Lisbon

    April 24, 2019 in Portugal ⋅ ⛅ 15 °C

Rain showers on and off since arriving in Lisbon, although quite warm.

We visited two museums to get shelter one of which turned out to be open air. The other was the best guarded in the world - the museum of the national guard.

Lovely local restaurant/pasteleria where we had hake and sea bass for tea.

In touch with Jonny whose hospital adventure is ongoing.

Tomorrow is the celebration of Portugal’s carnation revolution - freedom from dictatorship.

  • Day 1 Verdelha de Baixa

    April 25, 2019 in Portugal ⋅ ⛅ 14 °C

A largely fine day with a few short showers. A national holiday so many places shut - but not the popular museo Azulejos (tile museum).

    Locals dress in winter coats.

Slow going, mud under foot. C. 24km.

Evening meal in local restaurant catering for peregrines and workers. 5 courses and wine for 8 euros. We doubled up on wine for no extra cost.

  • Day 2 Azambuja

    April 26, 2019 in Portugal ⋅ ⛅ 16 °C

32km of walking on flat terrain today. No rain.

Very pleasant riverside path to Vila Franca de Xira where we had coffee no 2 (and cake).

Wetlands to our right all afternoon. Saw black winged stilts, glossy ibis. Cranes soaring overhead and nesting on towers carrying electric cables for the railway.Read more

  • Day 3 Porto do Muge

    April 27, 2019 in Portugal ⋅ ☀️ 19 °C

A lower mileage day. A relaxed start so that I could buy a hat that would protect my ears.

Flat walking across a flood plain passing fertile fields and our first vineyards. A farm with its own landing strip and a plane practising landings - about 7 as we walked past.

Relaxed lunch at a riverside cafe.

Accommodation at Quinta da Burra - a very interesting experience.

  • Day 4 Santarem

    April 28, 2019 in Portugal ⋅ ⛅ 28 °C

Sunny start from Quinta da Burra.

    Vineyards, poppies.

Marker post showing flood levels in recent years.

Sentarem is photogenic. Best of all is an irreverent mural in front of Nostra Senora da Graca church. (The church body is several metres below the grand entrance. )

Streets strewn with rosemary and flower arrangements in advance of a religious procession.

  • Day 5 Golega

    April 29, 2019 in Portugal ⋅ ⛅ 24 °C

Leaving Santarém by the old city gate at about 7:45am - already warm.

Met Sofia who broadcasts daily on Portuguese radio about the environment

Planting tomatoes which are destined to be made into ketchup.

A very long, hard, hot walk. The last 7km by a fairly busy road. Golegã a pleasant village where horses and bicycles are the main types of transport

  • Day 6 Tomar

    April 30, 2019 in Portugal ⋅ ☀️ 23 °C

Golegã houses have a ‘house style’ - white with orange or blue trim.

Many visual references to horses though we saw none.

Lovely route. Along the way we saw: lots of cranes, hoopoes, wild fennel, cactus flowers, bird of paradise plants.

Cafe offering: fish eggs, tripe, gizzards, octopus salad, snails and pigs ears. As vegetarians we declined.

That’s the end of our Camino. Two days left in Portugal!

  • Day 7 Tomar

    May 1, 2019 in Portugal ⋅ ☀️ 18 °C

Great start to the day - a lie-in.

Then the disappointment of not being able to visit the knights templar castle in Tomar - virtually everywhere closed for Labour Day.

Whiled away some time having a hot towel shave at the barbers.

Met up with Graham and Sue for lunch and back to their lovely country home.
