    Travel to Ely

    July 14, 2021 in England ⋅ ⛅ 19 °C

By train to Ely - just takes an afternoon. Very warm and sunny here. The Lamb Inn is right next to the Cathedral, which incidentally can be seen from miles around.

    July 15, 2021 in England ⋅ ⛅ 17 °C

A morning spent touring Ely cathedral - not bad, but it was the Stained Glass museum that was worth the entrance fee. Free concert at lunchtime.

Cycled to Soham and Wicken in pm. Warm but very cloudy.Read more

  • Ely and Newmarket

    July 16, 2021 in England ⋅ 🌙 17 °C

The ride out of Ely on NCR11 is possibly the prettiest I’ve been on - past the cathedral, through two parks and then following rivers and dykes for 7 miles. At Wicken we followed good tracks through Wicken Fen which is National Trust maintained. -(—)-

Newmarket interesting: a dominant horse racing culture makes the town. Flat turned to hilly as we followed NCR51 to Bury St Edmunds. The heat was too great to cycle further and we took the train to Ipswich to get to Martin and Giovanna’s. Bangladeshi curry for tea.

  • Heveningham

    July 18, 2021 in England ⋅ ☀️ 26 °C

Hot got hotter. Pleasant country route to Woodbridge following NCR48. Coffee stop. Pushed onwards to Parham Airfield which houses two museums - one to American 390th bomber squadron and one to the British Resistance Organisation. Touching exhibits and well staffed (volunteer run).

Final push to Heveningham to see and stay with John and Janet.

  • Sutton Hoo, Bury St Edmunds

    July 19, 2021 in England ⋅ ⛅ 25 °C

    Even hotter. Painful to cycle
For more than an hour without rest and refreshment.

Sutton Hoo busy and hot. Nice to
understand a little more about the ship burial and archaeology.

Pushed on to Ipswich and then took the train to Bury St Edmunds. Many cyclists on the train.Read more

  • Bury St Edmunds

    July 20, 2021 in England ⋅ 🌙 15 °C

Another good stay at the Dog & Partridge. We ate at the pub last night , not willing to put any effort into walking in the evening heat. In the morning toured St Edmundsbury cathedral and had a shorter visit to St Mary's church, both interesting.

Rail return in the pm - all went smoothly.
