    Long way, long day

    March 3, 2022 in Spain ⋅ 🌙 17 °C

Smooth trip to Leeds Bradford airport, but there was along wait of over an hour to go through security. Smooth flight and eventual transfer to our apartment in Matagorda. Very attractive surroundings, filled with modern sculptures.

Cycle ride to Puerto del Carmen for a pizza tea.

  • Exploring the campsite

    March 4, 2022 in Spain ⋅ ⛅ 19 °C

Ongoing disturbing reports from Ukraine which is likely to be the backdrop to this holiday. We got out for a temporary escape.

Bus to Arrecife and then a walk to Castillo san Gabriel which gave a charming overview of Lanzarote’s history. One of the staff had good idiomatic English.

Lunch in a vegetarian cafe - V Factor and then we joined the throng for the bus back, checking if this is viable for us to take bikes on at another time.

  • Putting plan C into operation

    March 5, 2022 in Spain ⋅ 🌙 17 °C

Sociable 5km run with Lanza Road Runners at 9am, followed by a coffee. After a shower, we proceeded to:

Plan A - bus to Playa Blanca. Bus was 40 mins late and so full we couldn’t board. Move to

Plan B - bus to Arrecife for a late lunch. When it eventually arrived, bus was too full so we couldn’t board. Move to

Plan C - walk to Puerta del Carmen, finding the first decent restaurant, which was actually excellent. Fish soup and a filling salad. Walked across a strand that bisected the bay, although some waves were managing to breach it. Cycled along the coast to Arrecife, and then finished with a dip in the pool.

We are trying to suspend judgment about the bus service here - the timetables seem to be a work of fiction and electronic displays showing next buses are hopelessly misleading.

  • Teguise - Plan A works

    March 6, 2022 in Spain ⋅ 🌙 17 °C

Out for the 9am bus to Teguise - a relief that there was room for us and it was on time, but that was mainly because ours was the first stop. Bikes stored in the luggage compartment under the bus.

Teguise market has changed over the years and is located in the paved areas above the narrow streets. Mainly touristy stuff and fake branded goods. Only one vegetable, and one bread stall. Delightful coffee and pasty at Bob’s bakery just outside town.

We then set off to cycle cross country on roads that were quiet and well surfaced if possible. It involved a bit of walking on roads in preparation but soon we were on the long descent to Conil, Tias and eventually Puerto del Carmen on the coast.

Lunch at the friendly Finnegans Wake, swimming at the hotel pool in the afternoon, and a home cooked evening meal.

  • Tourism via mini triathlon

    March 7, 2022 in Spain ⋅ 🌙 16 °C

Early morning run along the sea front, then, after a bit of breakfast, we cycled to Castillo San Jose at the north end of Arrecife.

Interesting collection of modern art, especially a couple of works by local artists Cesar Manrique and Pancho Lasso.

Restaurant at the base of the castle has a magnificent view over the commercial harbour.

Lunch in Playa Honda during our cycle back.

Swimming in the sea during the afternoon - clean but chilly.

  • Another Brompton adventure

    March 8, 2022 in Spain ⋅ ⛅ 16 °C

Early off at 8am to catch the bus to Arrecife, where after a brief wait at the bus station we picked up another bus to Tinajo. Thankfully everything worked perfectly, and we celebrated with a coffee and napolitane with chocolate at a Pasteleria.

Cycled via Mancha Blanca across the lava fields to the east side of the island and then enjoyed the long descent to Puerto del Carmen.

Swimming in the pool in the afternoon and tea out.

  • Repeated pleasures

    March 9, 2022 in Spain ⋅ 🌙 16 °C

At last a leisurely start, taking a stroll out to watch and photograph planes landing at Arrecife airport. We then cycled to Arrecife along excellent cycle paths and took a walking route around Charco san Guinea, the church and harbour.

Lunch at vegan restaurant, the V- Factor. Swimming in the afternoon and a quick run before tea.

  • Final day & travel home

    March 10, 2022 in England ⋅ ☁️ 10 °C

Cycle out to Fariones and had a cooked breakfast at Lava Bar - one of many Irish owned establishments.

    Packed up (45 minutes).

Walked out to the north end of Matagorda to watch a few planes coming in to land.

Taxi to airport (rather than having the coach transfer).

Smooth return journey all the way through.
