    After a mammoth 11 hour bus ride from Atacama we arrived in Salta again and headed out the next morning to the upper part of the Calchaquí Valley to Cachi. We had a lovely drive through lush green mountains over a 4000m pass and the Cardones (type of cactus) National Park.
    Its a very pretty white washed adobe village with a lovely square, where today they had a community aerobics class. Why not!    Les mer

    Unrfortunately Lisa was poorly with a tummy bug for the next two days so couldn't do very much. But we did manage the classic Atacama desert tour of the Valle de la Luna and watched the sunset. Clare did a nighttime star gazing tour. We both managed the onerous task of having a spa day with massage & yoga.Les mer

    San Pedro de Atacama 1

    We ended our Uyuni tour by crossing over the border to Chile, to the town of San Pedro de Atacama. We were grubby & dusty having not been able to shower for 3 days. Stinky. SPA is a sprawling town, mostly catering for tourists, of adobe houses, dusty streets and lots and lots of tour agencies, artisan shops selling local textiles (made in China) & dogs, lots of dogs. We bumped into a friend Gill, who we last saw on the Torres del Paine trek in Patagonia 6 weeks ago! Clare went horse riding with her the next day to Valle de la Muerte (Death Valley). Luckily we all survived. The last 2 shots go with tomorrows post, of Valley de la Luna.Les mer

    Uyuni day 3: to the Chilean border

    Final glorious volcano & green lake - no flamingos on this one due to the arsenic. Then to our final night in a hostel attached to the park rangers office. The most remote place I think we've ever been - felt truly otherworldly. It was freezing cold, we were at about 4800m. Yes, that is me, Clare, jumping - just to get a little higher! I felt a little breathless after that.
    There were guys cycling this route. Hats off to them.
    Learnt some Quechuan words from the driver Johnny & cook Julia - ari, mana & haku = yes, no & let's go!    Les mer

    Uyuni tour day 3

    Passed the Arbol de Peidra - The rock tree. Then some geothermal geezers and wonderfully hellish and stinky bubbling mud pools. Clare braved her feet in a hot spring stream.

    Drove away from the Salar past fields of quinoa - it grows well here as it's high and dry (over 4000m).
    Passed a smoking volcano and some petrified lava.
    Found flamingos - lot & lots of them on the beautiful lagunas. No penguins yet so we are thinking we should rename the blog...Les mer

    Uyuni trip day 1

    Long drive through multicoloured and llama filled mountain roads to Bolivia's altiplano. Had lunch at the scruffy and remote mining town where Butch Cassidy & the Sundance kid died, having robbed the mine's payroll and been hunted down by Bolivian police.
    Then finally reached the Salar de Uyuni, the worlds biggest salt flat. So big it's visible from space. 11,000sqkm vast expanse of white, flat salt in distinctive hexagonal shapes. Incredible, perspective sight. We drove for miles and miles over flat whiteness. Eventually reached Incahausi Island marooned in the middle. Lots of cacti and almost as many people. Strange to be in the middle of nothingness, with loads of tourists. But nevertheless, very spectacular.    Les mer

    Over the border

    Took a bus to the border town of La Quiaca Trundled our bags several blocks to the immigration, crossed over to Villazon in Bolivia & took a bus to Tupiza. Our first proper taste of Bolivia. Our room had a very ornate purple bed head, everyone was watching the Argentine/Bolivian World Cup qualifier and we had the first proper spice we've had for weeks in a Mexican restaurant. Saw a dog on a bench and a golden statue. So far so good.Les mer

    Quebrada de Humahuaca

    Starting our road trip to the Bolivian border, drove first through dark, dangly jungle outside Salta, then through the many coloured landscape of the Quebrada de Humahuaca. Stopped for photos in the lovely named Purmamarca and Maimara. Passed the Tropic of Capricorn. Clare tried llama - in white wine (what else!) for lunch. Very tasty. Now staying in Humahuaca in an abobe hostel that is amazingly cold given how hot it is outside.Les mer

    Easter Crosses

    Took a stroll into town to book the next legs of our trip. Tomorrow we head north along more gorges for an overnight stay in Humahuaca (great name). Then we will cross the border into Bolivia and head to the salt flats of Uyuni, then into Chile for the Atacama desert.

    But first we found lots of crosses (it is Easter Sunday) and walked up to the top of Cerro San Bernado and came down in the cable car.    Les mer

    Salta City

    When we arrived on Friday night it was a bit of shock. From our grand designs in the desert with its own owls and a few thousand acres of cacti we arrived in the the middle of a city in the chilly rain. We are staying on the sixth floor of a 1970s tower block built to withstand earthquakes. We are certainly mixing things up. This is another AirBnB which has two lovely hosts and a washing machine!

    We are in Salta, a busy city in the northwest of Argentina. Spent a little time visiting the splendid colonial architecture. The churches look especially spiffy as it is Easter. We went out to eat last night at about 10.30 and people were queueing for our table when we left at 11.30. It was amazing food from just a local restaurant. I don't think we are ever going to be able to eat steak in Europe without a crushing sense of disappointment.    Les mer

    Grand designs in Calchiquí Valley

    Had one night in this gorgeous Airbnb room 15km outside of Cafayate. The house was built two & a half years ago by this Argentine/Swiss couple, designed by their friend. Kevin McCloud would be proud! It's beautiful. We had a full picture window view of an impressive thunderstorm then a starry night and full moon.Les mer

    Cafayate

    Quebradas de Cafayate
    Took an afternoon tour to the quebradas (gorges) near to Cafayate on the road to Salta. We had several stops to see big gorges, little gorges, big canyons, little canyons, natural amphitheatres, multi coloured hills, red, green, yellow and purple ones. And one that looked like a frog. All quite lovely. We've seen so many gorges over the past week we are a bit gorged out.Les mer

    Difunta Correa

    Stopped off on our drive back to Mendoza at a shrine to a local folk hero who is treated as a saint here. The legend has it that Difunta Correa's husband was captured in the civil war. She tried to find him, with her baby, but her body was found sometime later. She had died of thirst but her baby was still alive having breast fed from her. The main offering placed at the shrine is bottles of water - as Difunta died of thirst. There are thousands of them. Also plaques, prayer requests and thanks for prayers answered with gifts related to the request - car number plates, pictures of babies, scale models of houses and apparently somewhere a room of wedding dresses. Fascinating. My guess is that she represents many things, sacrifice, hope, love, survival, the fight for the cause...Les mer

    Itchy elastic national park 1

    Having returned to a more normal altitude, we joined a car convoy tour of fabulously named Ischigualasto National Park - otherwise known as Valle de la Luna, Moon Valley. Or to us, with our plethora of mossie bites, as Itchyelastic, and other unpublishable variations. The park landscape is ancient, some of the oldest dinosaur fossils have been found here. It's full of weird & wonderful rock formations of many different colours, gorgeous in the early evening sunlight. The rock balls are called cancha de bochas and they don't really know why they are so perfectly spherical. Clare took so many photos that we are having to do two penguins...Les mer

    Trip to the top of the world

    Had an adventurous and eventful trip with local guide Mariano and a group of Argentine tourists in a convoy of 4x4 over rocks, rivers, sand and ice up to, apparently, the highest point in the world that it's possible to drive to. Near the Chilean border, Crater Corona del Inca is 5340m - higher than Mount Blanc, so higher than any point in Europe. We started out at 6am and the sun rose as we drove. Luckily we only had headaches and a little wooziness from altitude but no sickness, although others in the group needed oxygen. Being buffeted by the wind, we saw other worldly landscapes, amazing array of colours, as well as the Laguna Brava with its flamingos and vicuñas (llama) in the distance. It was a rather crazy, haphazard day, all arranged by Lisa in Spanish - but it was a unique experience and we met lovely people in the group and laughed a lot - including Sol from San Juan who spoke English and shared her maté (local herby green tea) - much to Clare's delight!Les mer

    Gorgeous gorge

    Talampaya national park is another of Argentina's several UNESCO sites. A huge red sandstone gorge where they have found lots of dinosaur fossils (mostly now in the University). That one with Lisa is a real one - honest 😉. We saw a set of ancient petroglyphs which show that this was an old nomad route along the river bed. I got a condor shot for you Mary, but trust me it is just a black splodge so didn't make the 6. There was a fantastic triple echo across the canyon when we all shouted in unison. We saw parrots, eagles, maras, vicuñas and a tree with photosynthetic bark - very cool.Les mer

    Road trip Day 1 Mendoza -San Agustín

    Big, long drive through a desert in 35C plus WITHOUT air conditioning. We will not make that mistake again.

    Highs - huge eagles, mostly empty roads, the most dippity doodahs ever and lovely mountains.
    Lows - the relentless sun, heat, sweat and hot drinking water. One photo shows Clare trying to shade her burning skin with a white bag. Also no toilets or suitable places to stop and when we (Lisa) did, being eaten alive by a swarm of mosquitos who then joined us in the car. Thus followed a comedy scene of two women furiously trying to swat mosquitos with their bare hands. Lisa has over 20 bites from her pee stop.

    Now we are at our rustic hotel with a swimming pool (we've had a dip) a fully stocked and very reasonably priced minibar (also had a dip) - and more mosquitos (we stayed in the room til dinner).

    At dinner Clare tried two big Argentine classics of food and drink - milanesa (chicken escalope) and fernet & coke. She loved the first, detested the second. Lisa tried it too - its very bitter like maté. Don't like either.    Les mer

    Planning day

    The temp has been climbing and strangely peaks about 7 PM. It's in the 30s now. Both went for a nice run around the lake in the big park this morning then did loads of planning and booking. This is the part of the trip where we have four weeks with little planned and lots of choices to make. After some decisions we headed out for a late lunch and toured all five plazas in the city including the tiled Plaza España. Then back for more Internet and messaging remote places in Spanish. We didn't go out for dinner til after 10 PM.

    Here is the plan - 5 day road trip of national parks north of Mendoza. Then head to Salta early by plane, not 20 hour bus.

    Thurs 17 Pick up the car. Drive 450 km to San Agustín de Valle Fertíl.
    Fri 18 Drive to Talampaya NP. Evening meet up with a tour group and stay overnight in tiny place called Jague.
    Sat 19 Up at 5AM for a day trip to Crater del Corona del Inca and Laguna Brava. We will get as high as 5430 metres in a 4x4 convoy. Apparently the highest road you can drive up in the world. They bring oxygen tanks with us and we are suppose to eat in moderation and be very well hydrated the day before. No Malbec for Clare! Back to Villa Union that night.
    Sun 20 Drive to Ischigualasto NP (great name) aka Moon Valley. Evening back to San Agustín de Valle Fertíl.
    Mon 21 Drive 450 km back to Mendoza
    Tues 22 Fly to Salta in the afternoon    Les mer

    The tallest mountain in S America

    At nearly 7000m Cerro Aconcagua is the highest peak in S America. We managed to walk part way towards the first base camp and were very lucky to have such great weather to see the peak so clearly. In our lovely little group was Karl & Michelle from Dublin and our guide Martín. We had a "condor moment" too - so far, at all the most spectacular views, we have seen a condor gliding overhead at the perfect moment - today too. The amazing Andes are still putting on a glorious show for us!Les mer

    Wine tasting in Valle de Uco near Mendoza was a sumptuous experience resulting in two rather inebriated chicas... Learnt a little about wine production and a lot about how delicious Malbec is 😋
