UTBDR - Day 1 - Sand and heat to Bluff

Farmington, NM to Bluff, UT

Brought the bike up to Farmington in a Sprinter the day before to keep 500 pavement miles off new tires. Unloaded this morning and rode roughly 110 miles toward the start of the UTBDR.

Picked up the COBDR-UTBDR connector along the way. One alt harder section on it, fun for a couple of miles, rocky in spots but nothing serious.

Hit Mexican Hat and skipped the official BDR start at the Arizona/Utah border. Not much to ride down there other than pavement. Started the route at the San Juan River Overlook and jumped on the first section. Fast dirt roads, nothing crazy. A short alt harder ran sandy and a bit rough but didn’t really earn the label, more like regular BDR riding.

Back on the main trail toward Bluff. Couple of short stretches of deep sand and ruts, fun, short enough not to be a problem. Regular sand most of the rest of the way.

It kept getting hotter. Forecast had it topping out around 80°F. Hit 96°F instead. Plan was to camp on the river in Bluff but it was too hot and too many bugs. Grabbed a cabin.

Not pushing on to Monticello or Blanding tonight. Trying to nail a weather window for Lockhart Basin, the 70-mile stretch between Monticello and Moab, 45 of it dirt, half of that genuinely tough. Did it once in a Jeep years back. Hit 120°F. Hottest temperature I’ve ever seen. Forecast two days from now shows mid 70s in Moab and Monticello, isolated showers, overcast. Close to perfect for that ground. The terrain isn’t clay so a little rain doesn’t matter.

So tomorrow’s a short day. New trail from Bluff to Blanding, then on to Monticello. Sleep there, early start for Lockhart the day after.

Das Motorrad am Tag davor im Sprinter nach Farmington gebracht, um ca. 800 km Asphalt auf neuen Reifen zu sparen. Heute morgen ausgeladen und ca. 175 km Richtung Anfang der UTBDR gefahren.

Unterwegs den Connector zwischen COBDR und UTBDR mitgenommen. Ein Alt-Harder-Stück dabei, ein paar nette Kilometer, stellenweise felsig, aber nichts Wildes.

In Mexican Hat angekommen und den offiziellen BDR-Start an der Grenze Arizona/Utah übersprungen. Da unten gibt es kaum was außer Asphalt. Stattdessen am San Juan River Overlook eingestiegen und auf den ersten Abschnitt der UTBDR. Schnelle Schotterpisten, nichts Aufregendes. Ein kurzes Alt-Harder-Stück war sandig und etwas rauer, hatte den Namen aber nicht wirklich verdient, eher normale BDR-Strecke.

Zurück auf die Hauptroute Richtung Bluff. Ein paar kurze Abschnitte mit tiefem Sand und Spurrillen, Spaß, aber kurz genug, um kein Problem zu werden. Sonst den ganzen Weg normaler Sand.

Es wurde immer heißer. Vorhergesagt waren ca. 27°C als Höchstwert. Tatsächlich ca. 35°C. Eigentlich wollte ich am Fluss in Bluff zelten, aber zu heiß und zu viele Mücken. Stattdessen eine Hütte genommen.

Heute geht es nicht weiter nach Monticello oder Blanding. Ich versuche, ein Wetterfenster für Lockhart Basin zu erwischen, die ca. 110 km zwischen Monticello und Moab, davon ca. 70 km Schotter, davon die Hälfte richtig anspruchsvoll. Bin die Strecke vor ein paar Jahren mal mit dem Jeep gefahren. Es waren ca. 49°C. Heißeste Temperatur, die ich je erlebt habe. Die Vorhersage zeigt für übermorgen in Moab und Monticello so um die 24°C, vereinzelt Schauer, bewölkt. Fast perfekt für den Untergrund. Das ist kein Lehm, ein bisschen Regen macht also nichts.

Morgen wird kurz. Neue Strecke von Bluff nach Blanding, dann weiter nach Monticello. Dort übernachten und früh los Richtung Lockhart Basin.​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​Read more
