      Zagreb, capital of Croatia

      December 7, 2023 in Croatia ⋅ 🌙 4 °C

Left Budapest for Zagreb, stopped in at Lake Balanten (also known as Hungarian Sea). 600 square kilometres of freshwater and it is the holiday spot for Hungarians. Bitterly cold as the wind whipped up the lake. Small townships dotted the lakeside as we travelled to Zagreb.

Zagreb, Central Europe, average income $20k euros per year. In a city that has faced many wars and natural disasters. The city is recovering from an earthquake three years ago. Repairs/restoration works undertaken by private owners not the state.

Zagreb delighted with beautiful blue skies.

      Zagreb

      March 16 in Croatia ⋅ ☁️ 14 °C

      Tag 1

      September 8, 2022 in Croatia ⋅ ⛅ 27 °C

      Hey Penguins

😧 een once in a lifetime experience.

      Kusjes

      Zagreb afbreken

      September 8, 2022 in Croatia ⋅ ⛅ 27 °C

      Hoii

(Laatste foto)

      Da was het juuuuuuw

      Zagreb pov Leïda

      August 14, 2022 in Croatia ⋅ ☀️ 26 °C

      Exploring Zagreb

      September 14, 2023 in Croatia ⋅ ☁️ 23 °C

Today was a day to wander about and take in some of the many historical sights in Zagreb. But first, we wanted to experience one of the many bakeries near our room, so we stopped to enjoy a coffee and pastry for breakfast. It was located right across from well known, Ban Jelacic Square.

Afterwards, we headed to the Upper Town area. On the way we passed through the Dolac open air fruit and veggie market. We walked along historic Tkalciceva Street, which is one of the oldest streets in the area. And then we went to the City of Zagreb museum.

We spent a couple of hours there looking at artifacts dating back several centuries in the city’s long history. The museum is well organized and takes you on a journey through time from distant past to present.

From the museum we we walked on to view several more landmarks including Zagreb Cathedral and St. Marc’s Church. Unfortunately, those two attractions are both under renovation right now. So we could only view them from the distance and unfortunately, some sections were also obscured by scaffolding.

Following a short rest break at our apartment, we walked back to the Upper Town area to view The Stone Gate and follow some streets we missed earlier. We then picked up meals to go and headed back to our room to eat, relax and get ready for the next leg of our trip. We are getting up early to catch a train to Split.

      Arezzo

      March 23 in Croatia ⋅ ☁️ 20 °C

A leisurely day exploring this delightful mix of ancient and modern town. Replete from the now habitual croissant crema + coffee, we started with the market. It was massive - filling a tree lined avenue which stretched at least 1km. The food section of any market always interests and this one was quite amazing for cheeses, hams, sausages (wild boar) and fish. Big sides of roast pork were sliced on demand to create take away buns complete with a slice of roasted pig liver.
It was time to check the rail station as we had heard yesterday that a strike was imminent. We have to be at Rome airport by Sunday night for our 0630 flight to Zagreb.
It was all looking dodgy. We took the decision to leave today at 6pm (strike starting at 9pm).
We took a quick walk up the town to check the view from the park and snap a few more of the beautiful Umbrella pines which are everywhere. The bark is amazing.
Our host was kind enough to refund one day.
We found a hotel just 500m from Rome Termini station for the night and enjoyed a slice of pizza with gin + tonic in our room at 10pm. Living the high life!

      Zagreb H3 Trail #2355

      March 7, 2020 in Croatia ⋅ ☁️ 10 °C

Awesome trail today here in Croatia. Fun pack of about 15 stalwart hashers on a super shiggy trail through the mountains. Would have been better if it were about 15-20 degrees warmer (F or C). Was the coldest trail I have run on this excursion, but well worth it with 9 Kms of shiggy trails through the mountains on bike paths. So much fun. https://www.relive.cc/view/vrqodyNpyyvRead more

      Explore Dubrovnik

      September 30, 2023 in Croatia ⋅ ⛅ 25 °C

OAT has picked hotels that are close to the center of the old city or point of interest for each night. I like the idea, but it can make for some interesting experiences like older hotels. OK!!!

This morning, we explored the old city of Dubrovnik (was a city-state from 1358 to 1808) and heard about the history from a local guide. Beautiful walled city (about a mile walk on top of the wall) with old buildings and setting.

It is hard to comprehend that this old city was subjected to major damage during the breakup of Yugoslavia in the early 1990s from artillery bombardment. Repair work continues through UNESCO. Our travel company, Grand Circle Travel, has a foundation that also contributes to this effort.

      Plitvice to Zagreb (NYE)

      December 31, 2023 in Croatia ⋅ ⛅ 14 °C

      Hello last day of 2023!

We only had a two hour drive from Plitvice to Zagreb today so decided to break up the journey with a stopover in Karlovac. Apart from a nice coffee shop there is absolutely nothing to recommend it!

Being New Year's Eve and every man and his dog came to Zagreb + our accommodation is close to the action, parking was a bit of an issue. We eventually found a garage about 1.3km away, and made our way to the accommodation, leaving all our gear in the car for now. Across the road from our apartment is a beer garden, so we headed over there for a sausage and a beer, mainly because it was close, but also because there was a life-sized statue of Nick Cave at the entrance, which was just a little bit random!

Due to the sheer number of people still pouring into the city, we decided to leave our cars where they were and walked back to the car park and then back again with all our suitcases. Given our late lunch, our last meal of 2023 was cheese and biscuits. Craig and I headed into the main square to see what NYE celebrations would look like which included a very loud DJ playing unintelligible doof doof music (I know I sound old) etc, so we headed home again. I had read before I went out that in May the Zagreb council had opted out of NYE fireworks. Locals evidently had not because there was random explosions happening all night, included some just outside our apartment. And at midnight I heard the main fireworks display, so the council obviously had a change of heart.

I also managed to slip in one final injury just two hours before midnight trying to work out how Sam Kerr can jump so high as per a photo I just looked at. In attempting this spectacular recreation, I forgot I was wearing socks on a polished timber floor. Ouch from my wrist. The owner of the apartment had left us a bottle of liqueur. Not saying if the two things are related...
