    A Night at the Opera

    30 avril 2023, États Unis ⋅ 🌧 13 °C

NYC 🥳 Thanks to the Jetlag I started the day super early but still in a good mood 😅 pro of being up that early, I had Times Square almost for myself. Con, most shops aren't open yet making it difficult to find some breakfast.

Since I didn't really have time to plan anything in advance, I just went with the flow and started exploring the city by foot. With the shops open, I had to celebrate being back in North America with a cinnamon bun 😋 Didn't disappoint 🤩.

Unfortunately, the wheater wasn't so good and only got worse. Nevertheless, I already saw some iconic buildings like the Flatiron Building and the Empire State Building (hiding in the clouds). Not surprisingly, eventually I ended up in a book store. The Strad bookstore has ober 18 miles of book shelves and was absolutely amazing 🤩.

Unsure what to do with the rainy afternoon, I headed to Licoln Centre and ended up getting some discounted last minute tickets for the Metropolitan Opera 😅. As a well known opera expert I was totally aware what Verdis Aida had in stall for me. Just kidding, Wikipedia had my back here 🤓. The building and the whole show was absolutely impressive: huge Egyptian stage design, funny costumes, a gigantic orchestra and very loud italian singing 🤯 Oh and at some point there were actual horses 😅. Definitely, an experience.

  • Step by Step🚶🏼‍♀️

    1 mai 2023, États Unis ⋅ ⛅ 16 °C

Waking up to sunshine I fell back into old backpacking habbits and booked a free walking tour first thing in the morning. I made my way down to Soho where the tour was about start. We explored Soho, Little Italy and Chinatown. Apart from talking about food quite a lot I learned about the cast-iron buildings. The facades are actually made out of cast-iron resulting in them being magnetic. Obviously, I had to try it out. Hihi 😇

After the tour I teamed up with a Canadian solo traveller and we went for the Staten Island ferry: Manhattan Skyline and Lady Liberty ✅️

Back on the mainland, I walked trough the financial district with its famous bull and trinity church ending up at the 9/11 memorial. From there, I continued towards Brooklyn Bridge but the amounts of tourist was unbearable. Maybe next time 🤷🏼‍♀️

Last stop of the day was Rockefeller Centre. The famous ice rink is a roller skating rink in summer 🌞. I'm not sure how many steps in total I made, but me feet were definitely hurting at the end of the day. Machste nichts 😅

Oh, I also found my perfect Hipster breakfast: Acai Bowls 😋💸

I'm not Throwing Away my Shot

    2 mai 2023, États Unis ⋅ ☁️ 12 °C

To beginn the day, I did what everyone else around me was doing: I grabbed a coffee or in my case a red tea latte. Tea creations with milk (alternatives) definitely is a thing👌😋

I made my way trough the Central Park towards the Guggenheim museum. As it started raining again I stopped for a bagel and quickly revealed myself to be foreign. Apparently, ordering a cream cheese bagel is not specific enough 😅

The Guggenheim exhibition was pretty cool. Although, I must say some of it looked like someone forgot to tidy up 🙊. Afterwards we went to check out the Cooper Hewitt museum. In case you're wondering, my Canadian friend had some kind of membership allowing us both to enter the museum for free 🥳

For the rest of the afternoon I went back to Central Park and kept on exploring. The park with the amazing Skyline in the background definitely is pretty unique 🙌

Finally, I couldn't resist and bought a way to expensive ticket for Hamilton. Worth every Penny though 😍 The theater was filled to maximum capacity and everyone was cheering before the actors even began to sing. Lieben wir 🙌

  • About Bridges and Other Stuff

    3 mai 2023, États Unis ⋅ ☁️ 13 °C

To beginn with, don't question the course of this day. There is no underlying planing. It's more about intuition at this point 😅

I started at the Hudson Yards from where I explored the Highline: an old traintrack above the city converted into a park. Pretty cool 😇. From there I had a look into Chelsea Market but quickly decided I still wanted to see Dumbo (Down Under the Manhattan Bridge Overpass). Hence I took the subway and headed over the Hudson.

The view on Manhatten and Brooklyn Bdrige as well as the generell Skyline was amazing. I had some icecream and decided to give Brooklyn Bridge a well deserved second chance and made it trough this time. Nevertheless, the touristic crowd did exhaust me hence I decided to visit the library. Didn't disappoint and definitely on my happy place list 😍📖

Next up was a visit at the United Nations. I did a tour and our lovely tour guide from the Dominican Republic showed us around. The building is filled with exhibits gifted by member countries. Among the ones we saw the ones from Nagasaki were incredibly impressive and touching. She also told us anecdotes: did you know the art works in the general assembly room are referred to as "scrambled eggs" and "bugs bunny"? 😅

For dinner I met up with my Canadian friend and we enjoyed some Mexican food and margaritas 🍹. Since it was our last evening in NYC and we both still had "visiting a comedy club" on our list, we decided to give it a try. And somehow we got into the Village Underground Club from a standby line. I guess the security guy liked us 😅🙊. Inside we had to put our cellphones in a bag which was than sealed. They were very determined on no recording of any kind leaving the club.

I didn't know anyone of the comedians (as expected) but they were super funny and I loved the atmosphere. Snacking on some fries while having a good laugh is something I could get used to 😁. Obviously, at some point someone waa joking about Germans. But he did his research: jokes about the non existing tempolimit on german autobahns. He got me there 😅

  • Visiting the Monuments

    5 mai 2023, États Unis ⋅ ⛅ 20 °C

After arriving yesterday to beautiful Union Station, this was my 1st full day in DC 🙌. I met with Nadiya and her friend Devisha to see the monuments. The whole area around the monuments is super beautiful and with the weather finally being on my side again the stroll was quite enjoyable. Plus, have you ever seen Secret Service Officers riding mountain bikes? Apparently, that's a thing now. 😅

In the evening we went out to celebrate Cinco de Mayo✌️Super cool to finally see Nadiya again, meet her fiancé and spend time with them and their friends 🤩

  • Theodore Roosevelt Island

    6 mai 2023, États Unis ⋅ ☀️ 23 °C

After having recovered from last night, I went to explore Georgetown with its pretty old houses and its waterfront 😇 after having some pizza by the water for lunch I made my way to Theodore Roosevelt Island.

The Island is located in the Potomac River right in front of the city allowing for a pretty view. Furthermore, it is only accessible by foot and full of trees 🌳 After spending almost a week inside cities this small nature oasis was just what I needed... and an afternoon with my book 📖 Vacation mode fully activated 🙌

  • Capitol Hills and Beyond

    7 mai 2023, États Unis ⋅ ☁️ 23 °C

Starting the day of with an extensive brunch including unlimited Mimosas. Cheers 🥂 A little tipsy, I decided to go see the dinosaurs and made my way to the Natural History Museum. There weren't as many as I imagined and they weren't moving. But maybe I have to come back at nighttime 😅

After the museum I continued on the National Mall making my way up to the capitol. Unfortunately, it is not open to the public right now due to constructions 🤷🏼‍♀️ But still, pretty impressive already from the outsight.

I kept walking till the Eastern Market and found this awesome bookstore: Capitol Hill Bookstore. The tiny shop was filled with shelves and the shelves were bursting with books 😍 Lieben wir!

As it had started to rain I made my way to the hostel. The TV lounge, Basketball playoffs and some fellow travellers made up for the perfect evening entertainment 🙌

  • Another Day in DC

    8 mai 2023, États Unis ⋅ ⛅ 28 °C

First stop of the day: the National Air and Space Museum 🚀 Aircrafts, turbines and an X-Wing Fighter. How could one not love it? I guess I'm undeniable an engineer 😅

Next up I went to see the Arlington Cementery which was very american in every sense. Extensive security check to get on the ground and inside hop on hop off golf card tours so you don't have to actually walk 🤦🏼‍♀️

From the Cementery I crossed a bridge back to DC and made my way back to the monuments (more than half of the sights are around here I'd say). Tidal Basin is this little lake right next to it with a beautiful waterfront. I found myself a bench in the shade and enjoyed a good book while relaxing for a while 🙆🏼‍♀️ Well needed by this time.

  • Visiting the Amazing Aviation Hangar 🤩

    9 mai 2023, États Unis ⋅ ☁️ 18 °C

What a day 🤯 Before I jump right into todays highlight I must atleast mention gorgeous Congress Library which I went to visit in the morning. Unfortunately, I wasn't allowed into the actual reading room 😤Since I was only a tourist, I got to observe it from a window of the top floor 🤷🏼‍♀️ That's something... I guess.

A bit disappointed I wasn't sure about what to do next. Luckily, I decided to start the journey to the Steven F. Udvar-Hazy Aviation center 🤩 the journey took me almost two hours by metro and bus but was so worth it.

The gigantic aviation hangar is home to thousands of aviation and space artefacts including the Discovery Space Shuttle 🤩🤯 Because the sheer amount of artefacts was so overwhelming I quickly decided to join one of the free highligh tours. Our guide Dennis was an army veteran and could talk about each artefact for hours. Which is why the tour took twice as long as planned 😅 Lieben wir!

Let me mention at least some of the highlights here: first, the blackbird SR-71. A long range, high speed (Mach 3+!) aircraft used for spying. Pilots had to wear space suits! The aircraft is built in a way for it to be almost invisible to radar. Due to curved form and transparent section it equals approximately a square meters of metal when searching for it with radar 🤯

Secondly, a Concorde. At its timed it cut the time needed for traveling from Boston to Paris in half. But it would only for approximately 100 passengers and no luggage 🤷🏼‍♀️

Lastly, the Discovery 🤩 The Orbiter of the Space Shuttle did 39 flight to space and still looks pretty amazing. The outer shell consists of 26000 individual tiles from which 16000 still are orginal. The rest has been replaced at some point resulting in its unique looking shell.

Oh, and turbines and engines ♥️ there were so many. But that's a whole other story 😅.

    National Portrait Gallery

    10 mai 2023, États Unis

As my last stop in DC, I visited the National Portrait Gallery. It has not only some nice paintings but with its beautiful building, it also makes a pretty decent place to spend some time 😊

Among others the Gallery holds the presidential portraits. Most of them actually look pretty similar with the exception of Kennedy and Obama. In my opinion, more presidents should try something new 😅En savoir plus
