      DAY 21 - Prague (Butterflies & Sunsets)

      12. september 2023, Tsjekkisk Republikk ⋅ ⛅ 29 °C

Our preparation for our early check-out was interrupted by an even earlier cleaner. Once checked out, we went down to the coffee shop to burn some time before saying goodbye to Sean and Zoe. We headed up to our new apartment where we could thankfully drop off our luggage before check-in.

While waiting for our formal check-in, we visited the Papilonia Butterfly House. The butterflies loved Scott's bright blue shit and yellow hat. More often than not, Scott had multiple butterflies on him. There was a group in the butterfly house that impressed that they took their own photos of it. Unfortunately, Meg wasn't as big of a hit with the butterflies.

On the way back to the apartment, we grabbed some ramen noodles to cook at the apartment. We also detoured past Apple to grab some air tags (after hearing about Niki's luggage issues) and Vodafone to grab a sim for Scott.

After non-stop running around, we relaxed in the apartment for a few hours. It was such a relief to us both that it actually had air conditioning.

Feeling refreshed, we went for a walk towards Riegrovy Sady (Rieger Gardens) to watch the sunset. We found a nice spot of the hill, and Scott went on a mission to find some water. On his walk, he found a beer garden with alcohol and food vans, and music playing. We sat down and watched the sunset over the beautiful city of Prague (even if a family ruined Scott's time-lapse video).

We spent the rest of the evening in the beer garden enjoying a few drinks and some tasty food. This was a perfect way to finish off our time in Prague. Tomorrow, we are off to Amsterdam.

DAY 22 - Prague to Amsterdam

      13. september 2023, Tsjekkisk Republikk ⋅ ☁️ 25 °C

Before leaving Prague, Scott managed to get out for his morning run. The run down Vltara River was nothing spectacular, but the run back on the opposite side was much nicer. Especially the last few kms approaching the city centre with views of various bridges and Prague Castle.

Other than a few niggling concerns about losing our luggage during a short stopover in Frankfurt, our flights were pretty cruisy.

Our Bolt driver from Schipol Airport (Amsterdam) to our hotel was very friendly. Even if he thought evolution is not real (he based this upon humans not changing over the past 200 years).

Our room was up three flights of very steep stairs and was hardly big enough for us to fit our luggage in.

We went to Bulldogs for a feed and some cheeky "spiked" drinks. Feeling a lot lighter, we listened to the live band for a bit before calling it a night.

Tomorrow is a day of walking and museums.

      Prague pub tour

      12. oktober 2023, Tsjekkisk Republikk ⋅ ☁️ 19 °C

Lazy morning, then went on a pub tour through the town, heaps of history and pop culture all about Prague. It was pretty cool!

The Rolling Stones paid for the first set of lights for Prague castle and the Czech drink the most beer in the world.

Then some glow in the dark mini golf... we came out even. It was tense.

      Prague, Czech Republic (Day 2 & 3)

      9. oktober 2023, Tsjekkisk Republikk ⋅ 🌧 59 °F

      What we did:
      - Met for breakfast in the hotel to eat and plan the day. A lot of collective time spent googling the horrific Hamas attack on Israel and watching the news coverage. So sad 🙏
      - Headed out to wander the town square and went up to the Black Angels bar rooftop for views overlooking the famous clock tower and city. Grabbed some drinks and talked lakehouse and Christmas plans!
      - Walked around town some more and then grabbed lunch at a delicious meat market! Trent was in heaven.
      - Then headed off to do a 2-3 hour walking tour of the city. Great guide and interesting viewpoints on the locals, history, and buildings. Probably a bit long but all were glad we got a walking tour in.
      - After our little endeavor into learning, we naturally had to try and forget what we learned with a mini pre-dinner bar crawl. Had some more Czech beers at “Pivnice U Kata” and then returned to Black Angels bar to hit the basement bar this time around. Self proclaimed “top ten bar in Europe” we definitely enjoyed the speakeasy ambiance.
      - Headed over to our Celebratory dinner for Sally’s bday and a thank you to both Sally/Doug for making the trek over! Dinner was delicious with great food, vibes and conversation. Going to be hard to go our separate ways.
      - Post-dinner nightcap at a local Irish bar still open! A wannabe Kurt Cobain was shredding the guitar and our ears while a group of wasted college kids tried to dance in the front. Quite the scene but love a good nightcap 🤘
      - Around 11:30 Sally/Doug headed back and Steph/Trent headed to another bar, Hemingway House, to meet Trent’s friends David/Jess for a beer. They were over for Dave’s work and happened to be in Prague so it was nice to catch up for an hour or so! We hadn’t seen Dave since early June due to a series of surgeries, so great to see him doing well!
      - Woke up and enjoyed another hotel breakfast, debriefing further on the trip!
      - Headed out for some coffee recommended by our tour guides rcalled “Kavárna Obecní düm” (how do kids in these countries possibly learn the alphabet?). Great old school cafe by the Powder Gate - old school in architecture but embracing the future with little robots driving around bussing the tables
      - Headed over to the Lennon Wall! Really just a standard wall with a bunch of graffiti and pictures until you read the history. Pretty cool how significant a symbol it was for not just the Czech over the years, but also people all over the world as a symbol to promote freedom, peace and happiness.
      - After the wall we grabbed some final drinks at a river front restaurant “Bricks” overlooking the Charles bridge. Trent asked for a pretzel and the heavily offended waiter scoffed and informed him “this isn’t a pub, sir”. Stephs second hand embarrassment was palpable
      - Absolutely amazing week! We’ve said it a few times in these writeups this week, but we are so fortunate they made the trek over to make some lifetime memories 🙌

      What we ate:
      - Breakfast at the hotel - pretty solid!
      - Lunch at Naše Maso. Absolutely delicious “dry-aged” burgers for Trent/Steph (best of the trip!) and Pastrami sandwiches for Doug/Sally
      - Dinner at La Finestra in Cucina! Truffle pasta appetizers and ribeye/filets for all! Great staff and presentation! They brought out a small scale to weigh the truffle they put in the pasta. They then brought out a large tray with an array of steak cuts to pick from. Then the Somm came in to select a great cabernet pairing. Best steaks of the trip!

      Fun facts
      - Trent had the meat sweats after the onslaught of meat from the day. He ate a dry-aged burger, half of Stephs burger, half of a pastrami sandwhich, his 12oz ribeye, and many bites of Sally/Steph’s filets…. a bit repulsive to type out
      - Prague is nicknamed the town of 100 spires and it certainly lives up to it
      - Prague's astronomical clock is currently rated the #4 most overrated thing in Europe and we have to agree. Mona Lisa in Paris, The mermaid in copenhagen and Manneken Pis in Brussels beat it.
      - The Lennon wall started in 1980 shortly after his murder as a nonviolent protest by the Prague youth against communist oppression as they really embraced his music preaching peace and freedom. The government frequently whitewashed it, installed cameras and guards and yet locals always found a way to creatively paint over it again. The “velvet revolution” of 1989 is when locals nonviolently won against communism and it became a central rallying point for celebrating their new freedom. It’s now been replicated and used symbolically all over to fight for peace.
      - Doug and Sally confirmed that this trip made them much more comfortable with traveling Europe. Let the travelling begin!

      Prague, Czech Republic (Day 1)

      8. oktober 2023, Tsjekkisk Republikk ⋅ ☁️ 55 °F

      What we did -
      - Woke up early to take the four hour train into Prague! After the seat issues from Budapest to Vienna we tried to just upgrade to 1st and were faced with a hard and somewhat shockingly rude no. Fortunately this was a blessing that allowed us to save our sheckles as we found standard coach seats that nobody kicked us out of. Can’t always be bougee, I guess
      - Dropped our bags at the hotel and set off for an Austrian beer hall! Had a great assorted lunch and many tall steins of Czech beer! Na Zdraví! Great vibes and conversation! Again so fortunate to have this quality time with our visitors.
      - We checked into our room and then set off to burn off the beer/food with a tour of the fairytail/Disney city that is Prague. Shoutout to Sally for leading a really cool walk up to the hillside park with many lookouts across the river and city. Prague is beautiful! From the park we headed over to the “Prague Castle” for a self-guided tour of the largest castle in Europe! Wandered through the gardens, church steeples and ornate buildings before heading back towards Old town. Wandered the streets some more and enjoyed the sights from the notorious Charles Bridge, before returning back to what we do best - bars!
      - The Irish bar “Caffreys” caught our attention earlier in the day for advertising a slate of soccer, rugby, and the F1 race. Steph has been steadfast determined to find a bar to watch soccer and/or F1 in so this was a big find! Good vibes as the international crowd cheered on Arsenal vs. Man City. After watching Netflix Drive to survive we are obsessed with F1 (although Steph may just be in it for LeClercs dashing good looks) so it was pretty fun to finally watch a race live. Doug and Sally were good sports as we went back and forth on driver discussions that made no sense to them. After Arsenal won they even put on NFL football so Trent was thriving.
      - Lindsay was also asking for Sally/Steph drinking photos so we said hey over FT for a bit!
      - After an hour or two we headed out to get some pizza! Relatively full from the lunch earlier we didn’t need anything substantial. When in doubt this trip, pizza it is.
      - Tired from a long eventful day we called it at 10 for a good night's sleep.

      Where we ate -
      - Breakfast of coffees and croissants on the train
      - Lunch at “Lokál Dlouhááá” where we split assorted appetizers including local cheeses, sausages and Doug/Trent had roast duck.
      - Dinner at “Sasy” where Sally/Doug split a pizza and Trent/Steph split two pizzas (can’t leave Trent hungry).

      Fun facts -
      - Doug’s family is Bohemian so he was enjoying getting back to his roots for the first time and seeing all the food his family grew up on. Sally was on a quest to find Bohemian Doug look alikes! Much to Doug’s chagrin
      - Something was messed up with our reservations as the front desk processed our passports 3x and they kept apologizing. Alas Trent/Steph got a massive/spacious room while Doug/Sally got stuck in a closet..
      - The Czech Republic produces the most beer per capita in the world and also drinks the most beer per capita in the world. A fact of much national pride! As it should be

      Alla ricerca di una birra

      18. november 2023, Tsjekkisk Republikk ⋅ ☁️ 1 °C

      Erster Abend in Prag

      28. desember 2023, Tsjekkisk Republikk ⋅ ☁️ 10 °C

Der fröhliche Akkordeonspieler singt uns sogar ein Ständchen: Take me home, country roads (tschechische Version).
